四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   You may see some herons () in the park using bread or insects as a tool to catch fish. This is just one of the ways in which birds have changed their living habits because of humans. Now, a new study has found that birds that are able to change their behaviors in this way are less likely to die out. These changes may include adding new food to their diet, developing new hunting skills, or living in a new environment. These new behaviors have long been considered advantages in avoiding extinction(灭绝).

To test this on a world level, scientists studied reports of new behaviors among bird species. The study includes more than 3,800 new behaviors among8,600 species of birds. They concluded that the more new hunting skills the birds master, the larger population they will have. In other words, extinction risk reduces as the number of new skills increases.

However, it is stressed that innovation (革新) can only protect birds from changes in their living place, but not from over-hunting or harm from other species. It should be noticed that some animals are very dangerous to some birds: snakes can attack little birds, some hungry mice stole birds' eggs. Above all, humans often mean the greatest danger to birds. They always take up too much space, cut down millions of trees and even cause various kinds of pollution.

This shows that, unlike what is usually believed, the ability to innovate protects animals from some but not all of the rapid changes in the environment.

1Why do birds change their living habits?

A.Because they like their new habits. B.Because they want to use tools.

C.Because humans ask them to do that D.Because human activities affect them.

2According to the passage, birds that ____________ may not die out soon.

A.feed on fewer kinds of food B.have a little food every day

C.get enough food in some new ways D.dislike to live in a noisy place

3Which of the following shows the result of the study in Paragraph 2?

    A. B.

    C. D.

4Which paragraph shows the harm from other species to birds?

    A.Paragraph 1. B.Paragraph 2. C.Paragraph 3. D.Paragraph 4.

5What's the main idea of the passage?

A.Humans often help birds to change themselves.

B.Innovation in hunting skills has an effect on birds' living.

C.The ability of innovation can protect birds from all danger.

D.Birds can change their hunting skills in the new environment.

  • 25、You’ve got plenty of emails from your mom and maybe even a few from dear old grandma. But have you ever received a message from a river?

Now Ireland’s River Lee is sending out much information thanks to wireless(无线的) technology. In a program called the DEPLOY project scientists have put some sensors(传感器) in rivers that can find pollution levels.

Instead of asking scientists to collect water samples several times a day the government can now examine pollution levels in the water and find out if there is anything polluted entering the river. This makes it much easier for scientists to protect the environment since problems can be discovered before a serious pollution accident really happens.

People in the area can also receive free reports from the river so that they can find out whether the water is safe for swimming or boating on a certain day. And people can also know if the water is clear enough for them to drink and use.

The DEPLOY project has not only started in Ireland also the same programs have started in thousands of places around the U.S. Now you live in a world in which you could receive information with your mobile phone about environment. The technology should help to make us know more about the pollution that surrounds us—which just might get us all a little more involved with trying to clean up our world.

【1】 How do scientists find pollution levels in rivers?

  • 26、   Akuapem is in the eastern part of Ghana. The sun there shines all the time. The local people are very friendly and hospitable(好客的). Now let’s have a look at how Akuapem people receive a visitor.

A visitor is often welcomed warmly in a family of Akuapem. After the visitor is welcomed into the house, he is offered a seat and water at the very beginning, because the host assumes that the visitor must have come from a very long journey and need water. If there is a group of visitors, the host will greet the visitors from right to left. And the host shakes only with his right hand, because Akuapem people think the left hand is not clean.

Next, the visitor is asked how his journey was and why he has come. While the conversation is going on, the wife and the children, especially girls, are preparing food for the visitor. The visitor can choose his favorite food. After the visitor finishes eating, the host and the visitor go on with their conversation. Usually this is short one because the visitor is getting ready to say goodbye.

When the visitor is leaving, he is often given some food. He is also accompanied(陪伴) by one of the children to the nearest station. The child who accompanies the visitor will not come back home until the visitor leaves safely.
