四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Have you ever read Charlotte's Web, a classic novel written by E. B. White? It is a story about a spider. He made friends with a pig and helped him.

Wilbur was an ill-fated(倒霉的)pig. When he was born, he was so small that the farmer Mr. Arable decided to end the pig's life. Fortunately, Wilbur met the lovely and kind-hearted farmer's daughter Fern, she stopped him from killing Wilbur and asked his father to give her the cute pig as her personal pet to feed in a barnyard(谷仓场院).

Fern loved Wilbur more than anything. She loved to touch him gently, to feed him, to put him to bed. Wilbur grew day by day and made many friends in the barnyard. They are geese, cattle, sheep, a spider and so on. Of all these friends Wilbur's favourite is Charlotte, a beautiful grey spider.

As the days went by, Wilbur grew and grew. He ate three big meals a day. He spent long hours lying on his side, half asleep, dreaming pleasant dreams. He enjoyed good health and he gained a lot of weight. One day, the old sheep Samuel in the barnyard told Wilbur that he would be served as Christmas dinner this year. Wilbur turned to Charlotte for help. Day after day the spider waited, head-down, for an idea to come to her. Hour by hour she sat motionless, deep in thought Having promised Wilbur that she would save his life, she was decided to keep her promise. She had the idea of writing words extolling Wilbur's excellence, such as "a famous terrific pig" in her web. She makes the farmer believe that Wilbur is some kind of supernatural(神奇的)animal, too important to kill.

Thanks to Charlotte's efforts, Wilbur not only lived but also won a special prize at the fair. With the help of Charlotte, Wilbur became the only one pig to see the spring.

Unusually the author made a spider the heroine of the book. Many people are afraid of spiders. Charlotte did everything in her power to keep Wilbur alive, but Charlotte was so tired that she finally died. The novel showed how a strong friendship could last through the worst possible times.

1Which of the following can best describe Charlotte?

    B.Kind, curious and smart.

    C.Clever, helpful and loyal.

3The underlined word "extolling" in Paragraph 4 has the similar meaning to "________".

    A.praising B.preventing C.presenting D.protecting

4What is the main idea of the story?

A.We'd better make friends with animals because they can help us.

B.A true friend is the one who devotes himself or herself to you when you are in trouble.

C.Charlotte's Web is such an amazing book that it is worth reading.

D.Wilbur was so special that Charlotte tried her best to save him.

How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track (追踪) your performance on your phone.

The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection.

The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (don’t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you’re brushing long enough. "It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis," says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.

The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications on your phone, so developers could, for instance, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. "We try to make it smart but also fun," Serval says.

Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said "yes," but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.

The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, for $99 to $199, developing on features. The U.S. is the first target market.

Serval says that one day, it’ll be possible to replace the brush on the handle with a brushing unit that also has a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush.

【1】Which is one of the feature of the Kolibree toothbrush?

A.It can sense how users brush their teeth.

B.It can track users' school performance.

C.It can detect users' fear of seeing a dentist.

D.It can help users find their phones.

【2】What can we learn from Serval's words in Paragraph 3?

A.You will find it enjoyable to see a dentist.

B.You should see your dentist on a day-to –day basis.

C.You can brush with the Kolibree as if guided by a dentist.

D.You'd like a dentist to watch you brush your teeth every day.

【3】Which of the following might make the Kolibree toothbrush fun?

A.It can be used to update mobile phones.

B.It can be used to play mobile phone games.

C.It can send messages to other users.

D.It can talk to its developers.

【4】What can we infer about Serval's children?

A.They were unwilling to brush their teeth.

B.They often failed to clean their toothbrushes.

C.They preferred to use a toothbrush with a dry head.

D.They liked brushing their teeth after Serval came home.

【5】What can we learn about the future development of the Kolibree?

A.The brush handle will be removed.

B.A mobile phone will be built into it.

C.It will be used to fill holes in teeth.

D.It will be able to check users' teeth.

  • 26、THREE CENTURIES OF HOAXES!

    A THINKING MACHINE

In 1769, long before computers were invented, a man from Hungary (匈牙利) built a wonderful machine that could play chess very well. It pleased people all over Europe and beat nearly everyone who played chess with it. For decades, many people believed that it was truly a thinking machine. About 85 years later, the secret was finally revealed. There was a man hiding inside the machine all the time, who was obviously very good at playing chess!

    ZOO ESCAPE (逃脱)

On November 9, 1874, a New York newspaper ran a shocking story on its front page. It said that all the animals in the Central Park Zoo had escaped and were running around the city. It said the police were working to save people, but 27 people had already been killed, and 200 people were hurt. Many people in New York were terrified. But it was all just a hoax. The story was made up by Thomas Connery, an editor at The Herald, who wanted to draw attention to the poor condition of cages in the zoo.

  • 27、The Chinese tradition of giving gifts of money in red envelopes at Lunar New Year has turned into big business for Web giants Alibaba and Tencent, which now both offer electronic "hong bao".

At the end of each lunar year, it is common in China to give children hong bao -- some money in envelopes that are red, the colour of success. But now the old also take part in this activity.

It is now possible to exchange "red envelopes" with smart phone, which is popular in China and has caused a battle(战争) for the lucrative market between the two companies providing the service, Tencent and Alibaba.

"You don't have to pay the same cost or wait as long as you would for a traditional bank transfer(转账). It's more convenient, simple and fun," Wang Le, a 28-year-old Beijinger, told AFP. " With electronic red envelopes, you're not limited by your identity(身份) or the time of year. It's a new, fresh way of playing the game."

The idea was introduced in 2014 by WeChat, a mobile messaging system with over 400 million users and run by Tencent, China's largest Internet service system. It was successful at once.

This year, Alipay Wallet(阿里支付宝), the payment system run by Alibaba, is ready to take on the competition. It is allowing its 190 million users to send digital gifts, especially on the Twitter-like Sina Weibo.

For the past few weeks a digital battle has been terrible, with Tencent banning (禁止)Alipay from sending red envelopes on WeChat, saying they were at a risk. Recently, WeChat also blocked(封锁) Alibaba's music app Xiami.

To attract the public's attention, the two companies have launched lotteries through which they award red envelopes to users in an online game.

It's easy to send and receive hong bao or take part in the lotteries: you simply need to register (登记)your bank details.

According to market research group iResearch, Alipay controls 82.6 percent of the Chinese mobile phone payment market, compared to 10 percent for Tencent's Tenpay.

1Which Web giants now offer electronic "hong bao"?

    A. Alibaba   B. Tencent C. Alibaba and Tencent  D. Sina Weibo

【2】According to the passage, what’s the popular trend for people to send “red envelopes” ?

    A. Sending "red envelopes" through short messages

    B. Sending "red envelopes" through vedios.

    C. Sending "red envelopes" through smart phones.

    D. Sending "red envelopes" through Express.

【3】What does the underlined word “lucrative” mean?

    A.利润丰厚的B. 富有想象力的C. 平滑的 D. 好奇的

【4】Which one is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. Tencent allows Alipay to send red envelopes via Wechat.

    B. The idea of electronic red envelope was introduced by Wechat in 2014.

    C. It’s complicated (麻烦的) to send and receive hongbao or participate in the lotteries.

    D. Alipay controls a smaller payment market of the Chinese microphone than Tencent’s Tenpay.

【5】 What’s the main business purpose for Tencent and Alibaba launch lotteries?

    A. To catch the new fashion on the website.
