25、 The sight of a tailor-shop gave me a strong wish to throw off my old clothes and get a new suit. Could I afford it? No, I had nothing in the world but a million-pound note. So I forced myself to go on by. But soon I was drawing back again. The temptation troubled me a lot. I must have passed that shop six times during that struggle. At last I gave in, I had to. I asked if they had a cheap suit. The fellow I spoke to made no answer at first, looked me up and down, noticed that I was almost in rags(衣衫褴褛), then said, “Just a minute.”
I waited till he had finished his work. Then he took me into a back room to choose a cheapest suit for me. I put it on. It didn’t fit, but it was new and I was anxious to have it, so I said shyly:
“Could you wait a few days for the money? I haven’t any small change on me.”
The fellow looked at me coldly and said, “Oh, you haven’t. Well, of course, I know that gentlemen like you carry only large notes(支票)”.
I was angry, and said, “My friend, you shouldn't judge a stranger always by the clothes he wears. I am quite able to pay for this suit. I simply didn't wish to put you to the trouble of changing a large note. ” “Why do you think we can’t change your note? Instead, we can.”
I handed the note to him and said: “Oh, very well, I am sorry.”
He received it with a smile, and then as he looked at the note, his smile froze.
Realizing what was going on, the owner of the shop gave a low whistle and talked excitedly, as if to himself.
“To sell such a suit as that to a millionaire! Tod’s a fool. Please get those clothes off, sir. Wait till you see what we’ll make for you to your own measure.”
Before I could get in a word he had measured me, and was giving orders for evening suits, morning suits, shirts and all sorts of things.

26、Minds work together
"Let's brainstorm together!" You might often hear your teachers ask you to have a group discussion to solve a problem. But is brainstorming really a good way to deal with problems, especially creative ones?
Dutch company WeTransfer conducted (进行) a survey of 20,000 people from 197 countries and regions. Most of the participants have creative jobs. They are writers, musicians, photographers, and podcasters (播客博主). The survey results suggested that brainstorming is largely unhelpful for solving a creative challenge.
"It seems that while working together is important to bring an idea to life, it's not that good for shaping ideas in the first place," said Rob Alderson, WeTransfer's former editor in chief.
If we give people enough time and space to think properly (适当地), they will come up with better ideas, Alderson added. Even Alex Osborn, the father of brainstorming, sees spending time alone to think as part of his own creative process.
However, most companies fail to give their employees (员工) a chance to prepare and form their thoughts. They often have many meetings scheduled, which is a killer of creativity, according to the survey. More than 40 percent of participants see meetings as a barrier (障碍) to good thinking.
Spending time alone to think will help you come up with your own ideas and develop independent thinking. This is important when you're making decisions. Nearly 80 percent of participants in We Transfer's survey say they trust their own instincts (直觉) and research when they consider an idea.
【1】What was the result of the survey?
A.Brainstorming is needed to solve creative problems.

27、Some days, don’t you think, “Wouldn’t it be nice if the laundry would just do itself?” Self-cleaning clothes may sound crazy. But Australian researchers have found a way to make something like this possible!
A team at RMIT University, found a way to put special nanostructures(纳米结构) into clothing, which can then clean the clothes. When sunlight hits the nanostructures, they break down the dirt and stains(污渍). The nanostructures don’t break down the actual clothing because cotton and the other clothing materials are too strong to be broken down. According to the report, the researchers covered the clothing in a solution made of silver and copper(铜) nanostructures. All it takes is 40 minutes of sunlight and your clothes will look as well as new. So if you spill on yourself during lunch, you can step outside for a walk, and it will be clean by the time you go inside.
It not only makes your life easier, but can also be good for the environment. According to the US Department of Energy, the average load of laundry uses about 25 gallons(about 94 liters) of water. Water is a very important resource, so using less of it to wash clothes is better for the environment.
So one of the scientists at RMIT University knows more needs to be done. “There’s more work to do before we can start throwing away our washing machines,” said the professor. “But this is a strong foundation(基础).” So what’s the next step? Professors want to either start selling the solution by itself or convincing clothing makers to treat their clothing with the solution.
【1】Why does self-cleaning clothes sound crazy?
A.Because it’s impossible to achieve it.
B.Because a special machine is created.
C.Because the clothes don’t need washing.
D.Because the clothes can be washed by themselves.
