  • 21、Lillian Hanson, a college student, expects to graduate in about two years. What makes Mrs Hanson different from her classmates is her age 73 years. She has been studying at college, a few courses at a time, for 27 years.

When Lillian Hanson graduated from high school, she went to the bank to borrow money for further education. The banker gave her no encouragement. He didn’t think that a country girl should borrow money to go to college. He thought she should be at home doing work in the house or around the farm. So Lillian Hanson went home and raised a family of nine children instead of going to college.

Mrs Hanson never forgot her dream of getting a higher education. When her children grew up, she tried again.

She finds it is the hardest part of going back to school at her age to be sitting in class for long periods of time. Because she is not as quick as she used to be. Mrs Hanson often gets up and walks around between classes to keep from getting stiff(不灵活的). At the beginning of a course in using the computer, the other students all stood up to give her a warm welcome when she introduced herself and explained why she was there and what her aims were.

  • 22、Leonardo da Vinci died over 500 years ago at the age of 67. He was a universal genius who always enjoyed exploring ideas in many fields, including sculpture, drawing and painting.

His surviving body of work as a painter is remarkably slim: Fewer than 20 artworks can be comfortably regarded as his, although two of them — the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper — are easily among the most famous in the world. His three famous works now all hang at the Louvre Museum in Paris. The French museum has two more Leonardos — one of which is currently lent to the Louvre Abu Dhabi — forming the largest collection in the world. Building on its collection, the Louvre Museum will host a grand exhibition, starting in October, which will unite the largest ever number of Leonardo artworks under one roof. Organizers expect so much demand that a reservation will be required to attend, and tickets will go on sale in June.

Celebrations are already underway in Italy. Leonardo’s hometown is hosting a special exhibition featuring his earliest known drawings. In Milan, where Leonardo lived for over 20 years, celebrations will center around the Castello Sforzesco and the restored Sala delle Asse, where visitors can see original walls and ceiling decorations by Leonardo. In Venice, his most famous drawing Vitruvian Man, will be on display until July — a rare occurrence, as the item’s fragility means it’s seldom exhibited.

In London, visitors will be able to see over 200 original drawings at the “Leonardo da Vinci: Life in drawing” exhibition, which opens at Buckingham Palace on May 24, though organizers say this is the largest exhibition of Leonardo’s works in over 65 years.

The uncertainty that surrounds so many aspects of Leonardo’s life and works has undoubtedly fueled the world’s fascination with the Renaissance master. Over five hundred years on, it seems to be stronger than ever.

【1】What does the author think of Leonardo da Vinci?

    A.He was bored with art.

    B.He was curious about things.

    C.He was dead despite achievements.

D.He was intelligent in a certain aspect.

【2】What can we infer about Leonardo’s artworks from Paragraph 2?

A.The Louvre Museum in Paris has four of his works.

B.Only The Last Supper is regarded as the best.

C.More than 20 works are easily recognized as his.

D.Their exhibition in Abu Dhabi may be quite popular.

【3】Why is it rare for Vitruvian Man to be exhibited in Italy?

    A.It wasn’t discovered until lately.

B.It is the easiest to ruin while on show.

C.It is Leonardo’s most famous drawing.

D.Italy has difficulty renting it for the moment.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.The Life of Leonardo

    B.Leonardo’s Artworks

    C.Leonardo and Louvre Museum

    D.Celebrations for Leonardo

  • 23、The brothers Grimm(格林兄弟), Jacob and Wihelm are synonymous with(同义的)fairytales. The stories they gathered have been read by millions of children in all countries over the last two hundred years. It’s difficult to think that any children could not be attracted by a tale like Red Riding Hood(小红帽),which never seems to grow old.

This year, Dec20 marked the 200th anniversary of publication of the tales. The Brimms collected the stories and gave them to the world because they wanted to show what German culture was about. In their time, Germany was not yet a nation; it was a collection of little states. Like many patriotic intellectuals(爱国知识分子),they thought they could help people in German territories(领土) to understand their own traditions.

Quite a few adult were shocked by brothers Grimm’s work. They wrote about a wolf who eats a little girl’s grandmother and an awful old woman who wants to put Hansel and Gretel in a stove. In fact, the original Grimm fairy tales are often far more unpleasant, and more adult in theme(主题).There is a lot of cruelty too. In the wedding scene of Snow White ,the stepmother dances in red-hot iron shoes that kills her.

However, other people came along and made these stories more “suitable” for children. The modern children’s writer Philip Pullman recently published a book of his versions of some Grimm tales. He points out that the Grimms themselves changed the stories, but for the better. They knew how to hold the attention of readers. “A Grimm tale,” he says, “moves with a dreamlike speed from event to event, pausing only to say as much as is needed and no more.” So, when we read a story from Grimms’ collection, we’re getting something from old Germany, but our enjoyment is also thanks to the brothers’ great storytelling skills.

【1】According to Paragrah1, Red Riding Hood____.

    A. is popular with children all the time.

    B. is too old for children to read

    C. is a poorly organized story

    D. is too stupid to be believed.

【2】What is the Brimms’ purpose in publishing the fairy tales?

    A. To improved children’s reading skills.

    B. To develop educational system.

    C. To introduce their country’s culture.

    D. To make a living by selling books.

【3】By mentioning Philip Pullman, the author intends to____.

    A. describes the achievement of the Brothers Grimm

    B. present a different side of Grimm fairy tales

    C. prove the excellence of the Grimm fairy tales

    D. compare the difference between the two versions

【4】In which section of a paper is the passage taken from?

    A. Fun Times  B. Comment

    C. Life and Style  D. Culture.

  • 24、When it comes to transportation in New York City, most people choose yellow cabs or the affordable subway system. But I've realised that biking is one of the best ways to see the city. It can be a kind of workout, and it can also be such a great way to discover new places and really enjoy the journey throughout the city. Here are a few of my favourite routes, tips, and tricks.

    Central Park Loop(环线)

The 6.1mile loop is a standard for city cyclists of all fitness levels. A comfortable place in the middle of crowded Manhattan, the Central Park Loop is a great way to cycle without worrying about taxi doors suddenly opening or dealing with car traffic. There are so many ponds, lakes and complex bridges that you won't spot on a picnic in Sheep Meadow.

    Prospect Park Loop

It's like Central Park but without tourists. My boyfriend and I regularly bike down to Prospect Park to do the loop, and it's my favourite way to relax after a stressful day. Prospect Park was designed by the same man who did Central Park, so there are a lot of similarities—gently rolling hills, plenty of shade, lakes, and ponds.

    Governors Island

Governors Island is one of the few spaces in the New York City area where there are basically no cars! While the island is easy enough to walk around, it's not that big. But it's just big enough to make a few loops really enjoyable.

    Manhattan Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge might be the famous one. And the Williamsburg Bridge is a necessity for people, but the slope(斜坡) makes it easy to take exercise. Manhattan Bridge isn't much of a looker, but it's my favourite bridge to bike across: fairly easy incline, good views.

【1】The underlined word “workout” in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by “________”.

    A.experiment

    B.exercise

    C.plan

    D.idea

【2】What makes the Williamsburg Bridge suitable to exercise?

    A.A road that inclines.

    B.Having no bus to take.

    C.Being difficult to walk.

D.Many bikes for people to ride.

【3】Which of the following might serve as the best title for this passage?

A.The Best Biking Routes in New York City

    B.Transportation in New York City

C.Biking Can Be a Kind of Workout

D.How to See the City Better
