21、 One evening last summer, 11-year-old Owen and his mom put on white suits and taped their rain boots to their pant legs. Then they each grabbed a wooden pole with a large white cloth attached to it and started dragging the tools through the trees and grass in their Wisconsin backyard.
They were looking for ticks(扁虱虫). Owen’s mom, Amy Prunuske, teaches microbiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Wausau. She studies diseases that ticks carry. Owen, though, is known as a citizen scientist. Citizen scientists are people—young or old—who help collect data for research projects. They usually aren’t professional scientists, or if they are, not in the field of the project. Still, their work can be incredibly important. Citizen scientists can help trained scientists gather data from all over the world—even from space. They can provide new ideas and new ways of thinking.
Kids often make great citizen scientists because they tend to be curious and good at following precise directions. Sometimes they’re even better at these things than adults. And schools are convenient places for scientists to recruit big groups of helpers. As a bonus, citizen science often gets kids more excited about science.
Citizen science takes advantage not just of many sets of eyeballs, but also of many minds. When professional European scientists in Austria were trying to find how best to encourage people to use less energy, they partnered with student citizen scientists. The adult scientists had a long list of questions for people about how much energy they used. Right away, the students noticed some problems the adults hadn’t thought of. There were too many questions, the kids said. And some of those questions were too complicated.
The day in the backyard, Owen found two black-legged ticks, animals so tiny they’re often hard to see. He and his mom took the pests to a summer program she was teaching. There, he and other young citizen scientists tested the ticks for the bacterium that causes Lyme disease, which causes fever and headaches and can make a person extremely tired.
【1】Why did Owen go to catch ticks with his mom?
A.To provide data for professional scientists.
B.To prepare for his own future research.
C.To help her study the diseases carried by ticks.
D.To prevent ticks from spreading diseases.

22、Have you ever been caught like a deer in headlights when asked to tell others about yourself? 【1】 A simple “tell me about yourself" is a great way to get to know someone because it's open-ended and allows the person to choose a topic they're comfortable to discuss. Yet, the way to answer the question can be as difficult as the answer itself.
If the question catches you off-guard, you might simply be unprepared or uncomfortable talking about yourself.【2】 Here are two situations where you're likely to be asked this question and how to answer it.
“Tell me about yourself" is a common way for an interviewer to warm up a candidate at the beginning of a job interview.【3】The key here is to avoid getting too personal or talking too much. Before a job interviews have an answer prepared that hits on your past experience, present situation and future goals. Keep your response under two minutes and make it interesting to differentiate you from the other candidates.
You nailed the interview and got the job! You're likely to meet many people and answer some variation on the “tell me about yourself" question numerous times.【4】 Share your name and your role at the organization, and past information, if relevant. If you want to take the focus off yourself, ask the person about their role. 【5】
A.Again, keep it simple and professional.
B.If it hasn't happened yet, it will eventually.
C.What should you do if you are asked the question?
D.Who do you think is most likely to ask this question?
E.It's a good opportunity to learn more about your new workmates.
F.It tests the candidate's confidence and sets the tone for the conversation.
G.Whatever you do, don't turn around and ask the person the same exact question.
23、 Different contexts affect food production, processing, trade, marketing and consumption. As a result of this, the food availability, accessibility, and affordability— as well as consumers’ dietary behaviour and nutritional status—vary. One possible picture is presented here to provide an idea on how COVID-19 might impact the global food system.
Consumer demand plays a crucial role in food production and their demands depend on purchasing power and preference. Because of the lockdown, there is no work for many people. As a result, they do not have enough money to buy adequate food for their families. The closure of restaurants, school meals and tourism businesses may reduce the demand for fresh food. People buy frozen. dried and canned food with longer shelf life. Energy-dense, less nutritious foods are often more affordable than fresh and nutritious one.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, COVID-19 is not likely to be transmitted through food. However, workers can get infected by each other if they do not maintain social distance properly. Shortage of labor can not only hamper food production, but also the processing of food.
Around the world, millions of people depend on international trade either for then- livelihood or food security. The virus outbreak might slow down global trade and marketing of food. As a result, countries depending on imported food can face difficulties. The closure of ports and other supply restrictions will hamper food supply. The price of transferring food within and outside of the country may get more expensive. It means import may get more expensive and export may bring less money. On the other hand, the restriction in transport and supply can be the cause of food loss particularly for fresh fruits and vegetables. Companies may face difficulties to import the ingredients for different products which may disturb the production.
【1】The passage is mainly about ________.
A.why the food system is easily affected by COVID-19
B.how the world may be affected by COVID-19 outbreak
C.what effect COVID-19 may have on the food system
D.what contexts affect food production
【2】How is consumers’ dietary behavior changing now?
A.They are eating more fresh food.
B.Energy-dense food is not popular with them.
C.They buy more less nutritious food.
D.A balanced diet provides adequate nutrition for them.

A.gathering B.trade C.market D.processing
【4】Which of the following leads to the shortage of fresh food?
A.Growing concern for food security.
B.Inadequate ingredients.
C.Increased processed food.
D.Limited transport and supply.
24、Toy giant Lego has given up on plans to make its bricks from recycled bottles, in a blow to its efforts to cut carbon emissions (排放). The company said in 2021 that it aimed to reduce oil-based bricks within two years. But Monday’s statement said it had found that using the new material didn’t reduce carbon emissions. Lego said it remains fully devoted to developing sustainable materials for bricks.
The toy maker makes about 4, 400 different bricks. Currently, many of them are made using a plastic, ABS, mainly made from oil. The move, which was first reported in Financial Times, will be seen as a setback (挫折) after an open claim by Lego to improve its sustainability. Like many other companies, Lego has been exploring alternative materials to plastic that will be lasting enough for generations. In 2021, it said it had developed bricks made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, with some other chemicals added, to offer an alternative to oil-based bricks.
But Lego has now discovered that after more than two years of testing, it had found that using recycled PET didn’t reduce carbon emissions. It said extra steps were required in the production process, which meant it needed to use more energy. It has decided not to progress with making bricks from the material, and now testing and developing bricks made from a range of alternative sustainable materials.
Niels B. Christiansen, CEO of Lego, told the FT that it was hard to find “magic material” to fix the firm’s sustainability challenges. “We tested hundreds and hundreds of materials. It’s almost not been possible to find a material like that,” he said.
A spokesperson for the company told the BBC, “We are investing more than $1. 2bn in sustainability move in the four years to 2025 as part of our efforts to turn to more sustainable materials and reduce our carbon emissions by 37% by 2032.”
