21、In this article, we want to present why nature conservation and the promotion of sustainable development principles are important.
Environmental protection prevents natural disasters. Nature struggles for balance. This is how forests absorb CO2, grow and change it into oxygen. This provides an opportunity for life and also slows down climate change. The destruction of forests greatly changes the climate of entire regions, or even causes powerful floods. 【1】
Environmental protection stimulates research and technological innovation. The idea for the first flying machine was inspired by bird observation. The rainforest is the richest source of many medicines. Almost every animal and plant has its own technical secrets. 【2】 With the disappearance of ecosystems and wildlife species, the base for scientific research and technical improvement is nowhere to find.
Protecting the environment is protecting people. The loss of natural resources leads to economic crises, wars or diseases. 【3】 For example, the reduction of the population of bees will affect not only the production of honey, but also the whole food production system. No bees — no honey, no fruit, very few vegetables. This leads to hunger, disease, migration and war.
【4】 We meet with like-minded people. Any local success — the rescue of an endangered population for reserves — becomes a cause for global joy and inspires more participation.
We humans are part of nature and its cycles ourselves. Our impact on ecosystems has noticeable influence on our daily lives. But it can be predicted and avoided if you think with your head and act carefully. 【5】 Even small deeds can improve the state of nature and our life on the planet.
A.People spy on them and copy.
B.We are strongly dependent on it.
C.Respect for ecosystems helps to avoid such troubles.
D.And positive change can be promoted in the same way.
E.Taking part in environmental protection is a source of joy.
F.We consume the world’s natural resources in our daily life.
G.Even small changes in the ecosystem can cause huge disasters.
22、Cambridge Folk Festival has been running since 1965; it takes place in July and has a capacity of 14,000 people. The festival is committed to reducing the environmental impact of the event and has found that a strong relationship with their energy supplier, Pearce Hire, is key to reduction.
Cambridge Folk Festival has worked with Pearce Hire for over 30 years and they have come to understand the festival's environmental values. They work closely with the festival's Production Manager, to continually improve energy efficiency, introduce new innovations and to meet the criteria for a greener festival.
As Pearce Hire provides both power and lighting, they can invest in more efficient lighting, knowing that their investment will be subsidized by the resulting reduction in generator (发电机) size and fuel costs. They are also uniquely placed to identify where and when to turn on / off generators and therefore save fuel.
Over the years they have introduced a number of innovations in lighting: adding sensors, manufactured in-house, to switch site lighting on and off at dawn and dusk as required, resulting in huge savings in energy use and costs. They also replaced power-hungry lights with LED lighting site-wide, and supplied LED equipment for stage lighting.
Generators used on-site are one of the most energy-efficient generators you can get and they are arranged in an efficient system of many smaller generators rather than two big sets. The festival saves 12,000-15,000 liters of diesel (柴油) per event and makes a massive saving on the carbon footprint. Meter readings are taken every three hours during the festival so that the carbon footprint can be accurately calculated and the festival's major impacts identified and improvements made where necessary.
The festival encourages all staff and food sellers to “switch off” when possible; visitors are asked to reuse plastic cups to reduce litter and waste; backstage, water coolers are used instead of plastic bottles. The festival commission goes to great lengths to protect local waterways, land and the biodiversity of the area from negative impacts of the event.
Over the last five years the festival has reduced its diesel usage by a third. These reductions have been achieved through the joint efforts of supplier and festival teams.
【1】Why does the festival cooperate with Pearce Hire?
A.To be eco-friendly.
B.To try renewable energy.
C.To rebuild their relationship.
D.To increase its impacts on visitors.
【2】What does the underlined word “subsidized” in Para 3 probably mean?
A.Put off.
B.Added to.
C.Paid back.
D.Brought up.
【3】What can meter readings be used to do?
A.Improve the lighting's effect.
B.Record the carbon footprint.
C.Identify the type of litter and waste.
D.Calculate the total hours of the festival.
【4】What does the festival encourage festival-goers to do?
A.Switch off their personal equipment.
B.Go backstage to have cool water.
C.Stay clear of the local waterways.
D.Recycle stuff consciously
23、 With all the e-book reader apps flooding the Internet, you can simply download a file and then start reading your favourite story or subject matter. 【1】 reading printed books still has its own advantages.
【2】Just imagine this, when the pages on the left side of a book are piling up and the pages on the right side are becoming fewer. Won't you feel satisfied and motivated to move on?
Printed books aid people with sleep problems. It's a known fact that many people read before going to bed, which can help them sleep well. But note that they are paper books rather than e-books. 【3】 People who read on e-book tend to sleep badly and are more tired the next day.
Printed books exercise reading comprehension and concentration. In a study of middle schoolers, students who read on iPads had lower reading comprehension than reading traditional printed books. They sometimes skipped text in favor of interactions in the e-books which are designed to enhance comprehension. 【4】
That's why so many people prefer printed books. 【5】They are great for you considering that you don't have to carry any extra weight aside from your mobile device. Furthermore, if you want to grab a copy of a freshly released novel, you don't have to visit a bookstore. Instead, all you have to do is just tap on your smart phone or tablet a couple of times.
A.While that might sound really easy,
B.Since e-books are gaining in popularity,
C.Is it possible to have the physical books go digital?
D.In that case, students fail the practice of reading text itself.
E.To be fair though, e-books should also be given some credit.
F.The screen light is found to have a negative effect on the user.
G.The turning of pages aids the readers to have a visible sense of achievement.
24、 Sophie became friends with the gray squirrels during her first week at Penn State, after spotting them running around and wondering what they would look like with tiny hats on their heads. Today, everyone at the university knows her as the "Squirrel Girl".
Sophie tried bringing them food, and gradually they began to trust her. She managed to put a hat on a squirrel and take a picture. Thinking that her colleagues could do with something to lift their spirits, she started posting similar photos on Facebook. The response was greatly positive, and before long Sophie and her squirrels became an Internet sensation (轰动).
Growing up in a neighborhood outside of State College, Sophie was always fond of birds and animals around her home, but she didn't interact with people very much. She was later diagnosed (诊断)with Asperger's syndrome, but the squirrels changed that. "The squirrels help me break the ice, because I'll be sitting here patting a squirrel and other people will come over and well just start like feeding the squirrels together and chatting about them," she said, "I am a lot more outgoing."
And in case you're wondering how Sophie is able to get the squirrels to do what she wants for her photos, it has a lot to do with food. For example, whenever she wants them to hold or play with something, she puts peanut butter on the prop (道具), and they'll grab it. In the beginning, she would throw peanuts up the trees on campus and invite the squirrels to come down and get them, but they hesitated to approach her. She had the patience to earn their trust, though.
This year, Sophie is graduating with a degree in English and wildlife sciences. She wants to be a science writer and educate people on how to preserve the environment. As for her furry friends, Sophie plans to stay in the area and visit them as often as she can.

【3】How did Mary manage to take photos of squirrels wearing hats?
A.By dressing like squirrels. B.By putting them in cages.
