二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   About 4 million children worldwide develop asthma(哮喘) each year because of nitrogen dioxide(NO2 , 二氧化氮) air pollution, according to a study published by researchers at the George Washington University. The study estimates(估算) that 64 percent of these new cases of asthma occur in urban areas.

“The study is the first to quantify the worldwide burden of new pediatric(儿科的) asthma cases linked to traffic-related nitrogen dioxide by using a method that takes into account high exposure to this pollutant that occurs near busy roads, ” said Susan C. Anenberg, PhD, the senior author of the study.

“Our findings suggest that millions of new cases of pediatric asthma could be prevented in cities around the world by reducing air pollution,” said Anenberg. “Improving access to cleaner forms of transportation, like electrified public transport, cycling and walking, would not only bring down NO2 levels, but would also improve physical fitness, and cut greenhouse gas emissions(排放). ”

Asthma is a disease that makes it hard to breathe when the lung’s airways are swollen. An estimated 235 million people worldwide at present have asthma, which can cause life-threatening attacks.

The World Health Organization calls air pollution “a major environmental risk to health” and has offered Air Quality Guidelines for NO2 and other air pollutants. The researchers estimate that most children lived in areas below the NO2, guideline. They also found that about 92 percent of the new pediatric asthma cases that were caused by NO2 occurred in areas that already meet the WHO guideline.

“That finding suggests that the WHO guideline for NO2 may need to be re-evaluated to make sure it is conducive to the protection of children’s health,” said Pattanun Achakulwisut, PhD, lead author of the paper.

Additional research must be done to more persuasively identify what is leading to asthma within complex traffic emissions. This effort will help to improve the estimates of new asthma cases tied to traffic emissions.

1What can we learn from Susan C. Anenberg?

A.Old forms of getting around need to be replaced.

B.Few cases of pediatric asthma occur in urban areas.

C.Pediatric asthma increases because of unclean energy.

D.Greener transportation helps to reduce asthma cases.

2What can we infer about the Air Quality Guidelines for NO2?

A.It proved persuasive. B.It seemed unreasonable.

C.It would be abandoned. D.It turned out instructive.

3What does the underlined word “conducive” in paragraph 6 probably mean?

    A.Beneficial. B.Open.

    C.Equal. D.Familiar.

4What is the main idea of the text?

A.Asthma has put children’s life in unavoidable danger.

B.WHO should improve Air Quality Guidelines for NO2.

C.NO2 air pollution causes children to suffer from asthma.

D.Air pollution is a serious worldwide problem nowadays.

  • 22、The English test will be removed from China’s college entrance exam by 2020, according to the Ministry of Education. The national college entrance exam, known as the “Gaokao” has been used to evaluate Chinese students for three decades. The Ministry of Education has worked out a plan for reforming exams and enrollment. Tests will be held several times a year to allow students to choose when and how often they sit the exam so as to reduce study pressure and change China’s once-in-a-lifetime exam system.

The decision has aroused a heated discussion among Shanghai educators and parents who doubted the reform would reduce the burden of learning English or if the substitute test could reflect a student’s English skills and help students learn English better. Cai Jigang, a professor from Fudan University said, “The reform shows China is to give students more test-taking chances. But more chances might become more of a burden since Chinese students are likely to repeat the test until they get the highest score.”

“In my opinion, the reform doesn’t mean English is no longer important for Chinese students after it will be excluded from the unified college entrance exam,” said Yu Lizhong, chancellor of New York University Shanghai, “In a way, English is even more important than before since the test would only serve as reference, while every college and university, even every major, canhave different requirements of a student’s English skills under a diverse evaluation system.”

Yu said some students will have their study pressure reduced if the major they choose doesn’t need excellent English while others still need to study hard if they want to be among the best students.

The education ministry said the reform would not affect students attending the college entrance exam over the next three years. But parents with younger children are concerned. Zhang Hui, the mother of a fourth-grade girl at Pudong Zhuyuan Primary School, said English was her daughter’s strength, so canceling the English test would not favor her child.

    D. The system that tests are held several times does more good than once-in-a-lifetime

    A. the new exam and admission system will make no difference

    B. English shouldn’t be removed from China’s college entrance exam

    C. the reform may accomplish the very opposite

    D. Western educational system does not apply to China

    【3】According to Yu Lizhong, _______________.

    A. Students needn’t lay a good foundation during the period of high school.

    B. Whether students should study English hard may depend on their major.

    C. Students can constantly strive for perfection only in their major.

    D. English must be close to full mark.

【4】What’s the purpose of writing the passage?

    A. To advise students not to devote themselves to learning English.

    B. To call on Education Department to remove English from “Gaokao”.

    D. To report people’s opinions on English being removed from “Gaokao”

  • 23、When Lauren Schandevel arrived at the University of Michigan for her freshman year, she was struck by how wealthy all her classmates appeared to be.

“Just wealthy in ways that I couldn’t even imagine,” Schandevel recalls. Students had fashionable clothes and well-connected and powerful parents.

Schandevel had grown up in the north of Detroit. Her family was working class and she had gotten scholarships and a few loans to make attending the admirable state school a reality. When she got to campus, she didn’t think much about her status as a low-income student. Sure, when her bill came due, she’d have a bit of panic--- would this be the semester the financial aid fell through?

Then, during Schandevel’s junior year, the university’s student government put out a campus affordability guide, written with the average Michigan student in mind-but it’s worth noting that the average student at the school has a family income of about $150,000 per year.

The advice didn’t go over well with low-income students on campus. “A lot of the advice was like: fire your maid or sell your car. I was frustrated(受挫的) by this guide, and I was seeing others frustrated by it,” says Schandevel.

She decided to make her own affordability guide, and she fired up a Google doc and titled it “Being Not-Rich at UM: A Guide“. She added her own tips---the things that helped her survive and budget. But there was so much she didn’t know, so she left the sharing settings(分享设置) open for other students to jump in and edit the online document.

It took off. Hundreds of students started adding their tips about how to navigate college when you are paying your way through college. Today, Schandevel’s crowd- sourced guide stretches more than 100 pages. It includes advice about jobs, housing, teachers and financial aid---even many great tips on where to find free food on campus. The doc’s popularity helped her accept her economic status and gave her control over her life.

“Economic status is such an invisible identity, and there are no places on campus where we can really find each other,” says Schandevel. “It brought together people who had experienced this before, and students knew they were not alone.”

【1】How did Schandevel probably feel in her first year of college?

    A.Very excited

    B.A little curious.

【3】What is Schandevel’s attitude towards the guide from the student government?

    A.The tips are well-accepted

B.The tips are from the crowd

C.The source of finance is abundant

    D.The online document is crowded

D.It offered financial aid to low-income students.

  • 24、Over the centuries, the Khasis in the northeast Indian state of Meghalaya have learned to live in harmony with the deep valleys and fast-flowing rivers at the foot of the Himalayas.

Here, even today, most of these villages do not have road access. A trip to the closest neighborhoods requires climbing down into valleys and crossing flooding rivers. It’s hardly surprising that the need for connectedness provided the first creative urge for the ancient experiments in building the living tree bridges.

The raw materials to build these bridges are rubber fig trees since they are strong and they put out roots in the air. First, an ideal location on the river is identified for the bridge, and then young rubber fig trees are planted on either side. After a wait of 10 to 15 years, the trees are old enough to put out roots in the air. In the early stages of growth, the new roots on both sides of the river are tied to each other. As the trees grow up, they add more roots to the network, which the local (本地的) people knit into a living tree bridge. In addition, the villagers stuff fallen leaves inside the gaps of the root network so they may provide nutrition for the bridge over the years.

Once I asked my tourist guide what happens to the bridges that are no longer in use. He smiled at me and said, “They’ll become a part of the forest, my friend.”

Walking on these living tree bridges, I tried to find a comparable experience. No, it did not feel like crossing a concrete bridge. No, it did not feel like climbing a tree, either. Instead, it felt like a fairy tale came to life.

And perhaps, in a way, that’s what it is. In a place where concrete bridges are unlikely to survive even a few decades because of earthquakes, landslides and floods, these bridges grow stronger with age. They do not require money to build, only time. They are breathing examples of life in the past that can help us create nature friendly lifestyles for the future.

【1】What is the third paragraph mainly about?

A.The ideal trees for the living bridges.

B.The difficulty in building the bridges.

C.The creative way to construct the bridges.

D.The necessity of building the tree bridges.

【2】What can we learn about the villages in Meghalaya from the text?

    A.They remain in extreme poverty.

    B.They are well-connected by roads.

C.They stay high up in the Himalayas.

D.They are threatened by natural disasters.

【3】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.Ancient Experiments in Building Bridges

B.The Advantages of the Living Tree Bridges

C.The Khasis: the Most Creative People in India

D.Living Tree Bridges: Breathing Examples of Harmony

【4】In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

    A.Science.

    B.Travel.

    C.Agriculture.

    D.Advertisement.
