Chinese writing is one of the world’s greatest writing systems (系统). It is more widely in use than alphabetic (字母的) writing systems. 1. 世界上多于一半的书是用中文写的, including historical writings and novels, along with writings on government and law.
At the beginning, written Chinese was a picture-based language. It dates back (追溯) several thousand years to the use of animal bones and shells on which symbols were carved (刻) by ancient Chinese people. 2. Some of the ancient symbols can still be seen in today’s Chinese characters.
3. By the Shang Dynasty, these symbols had become a well-developed writing system. Over the years, the system developed into different forms, as it was a time when people were divided geographically, leading to different dialects (方言) and characters. This, however, changed under the reign of Qin Shi Huang.
Qin Shi Huang united (统一) all other Warring States into one country where the Chinese writing system began to develop in one direction. 4. 这个系统在统一中国人民和文化方面起着重要的作用。Even today, no matter where Chinese people live or what dialect they speak, they can still communicate in writing.
Today, Chinese writing system is still an important part of Chinese culture. As China plays a great role in the world, an increasing number of international students are beginning to appreciate (欣赏) China’s culture through it. 5. Written Chinese spreads Chinese culture wherever it goes.

As a result, he had little education as a child. He worked hard in many different jobs--- working as a paper boy, a sailor, and a miller. Though he had to work long hours at these jobs, London spent all his free time on books, especially those travel and adventure books borrowed from the library. He travelled to Japan and Korea in 1893. These trips made London decide to educate himself and change his life. He returned to school, quickly completed high school and entered the University of California. After only one term, however, London gave up his studies and travelled to Alaska in 1897 in search of gold, but he failed as a gold miner.
Though unsuccessful, the trip to Alaska provided ideas for his career as a writer. Once back in California, London decided to work as a writer. He bought a typewriter and worked up to fifteen hours a day, changing his Alaskan adventures into short stories and novels.

25、 New research suggests that climate change helped dogs develop from animals looking like cats to the way they are today. Scientists from Brown University in the USA believe that 40 million years ago, dogs were smaller and they looked like cats. They hid, ran after and killed other animals. As climate changed in the world, the physique(体型) and eatinghabits of dogs also changed. Thick forests that once covered North America started to become less thick as the earth became cooler.
The appearance of grassland made dogs have fewer places to hide to hunt for food. To get used to the environment, they changed their ways of hunting and slowly grew longer legs. The scientists studied how dogs have changed themselves by looking at the elbows (肘部) and teeth of 32 different species that lived from 2 million to 40 million years ago. The scientists said that the dogs' Bows greatly changed. Dogs from 40 million years ago had elbows that were more similar to those of cats. The function of the elbows was to allow the front paws (爪子)to catch what they could get and hold on to it.
