21、It’s certain that we’re all getting older. And while the older among us may be no spring chickens any more, growing old gracefully is no bad thing.【1】However, as the world population ages, will there be enough people to replace our younger selves?
A situation where there are more old people than young certainly has an effect on the world. A report by the Pew Research Center says that globally the number of people over 65 years old will triple by 2050, drastically altering some countries’ demographic (人口的) make-up.【2】Governments will struggle to provide satisfactory pensions, which are ultimately funded by taxes paid by the working population. And long-term, a smaller population of economically-active people may be a problem for companies trying to recruit staff.
【3】The Pew Research Center survey found that 87% of Japanese people were most concerned about it, while only 26% of people from the USA were. Some countries thought the elderly should take care of themselves, while others thought it was the responsibility of the family.【4】
But old age shouldn’t just be seen negatively. Elderly people have knowledge and experience to pass on. Some have wealth which they can spend, helping the economy. And some do voluntary or charity work.【5】And these include increasing the retirement age, encouraging people to save for the future, or even convincing people to have more children.
A.And with age comes wisdom.
B.Of course, solutions are needed to tackle the issue.
C.The aging population can be potential new customers
D.Many thought the government should be responsible.
E.Attitudes to an aging population vary around the world.
F.It also predicts that the world population will decline in the next century.
G.This aging population means an increased demand for health and social care.
22、It was a February afternoon in a Brooklyn classroom. Sixteen-year-old Taylor Engler came face to face with a cow. But it was all in her head. She was transported by a virtual reality (VR) headphone. It took the Berkeley Carroll School junior and eight other classmates to a northern New York farm. The farm was 250 miles away. For students, the technology means field trips are no longer kept within the length of a bus ride.
It's unknown how many classrooms have or will use the technology, but experts say few classrooms do or will do. Headphones that require a user's phone can cost as little as $20 or $30, but systems and software for classes run into thousands of dollars. The problem of not having good software is disappearing as more companies enter the market. But the rules for use haven't kept abreast of the development of the technology. In New York, for example, virtual reality lab experiments are not included in the state's hands-on lab time requirements.
Experts say science classes are where virtual reality holds promise for classrooms. “The biggest problem, I think, is going to be how closely it mimics the real world." That's according to David Evans, the director of the National Science Teachers Union. However, he said, “The ability to do dangerous things and to run many, many more cases in a virtual space as opposed to the real physical space stands for a huge learning chance.”
Lamb taught chemistry and he agreed. “Too often in schools, when you do experiments in labs, you mix these together, you mix those together and you get this result. And if you don't get that result, you have done something wrong. But we don't have enough resources for you to redo it, “he said. “In virtual reality, all I do is hit reset on the computer. I don't have to actually use chemicals.”
【1】What was Taylor Engler doing?
A.Riding a bus.
B.Giving a lesson.
C.Designing a farm.
D.Experiencing VR.
【2】What does the underlined part “kept abreast of" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Led to.
B.Focused on.
C.Caught up with.
D.Broken away from.
【3】What did Lamb think of the use of VR in the classroom?
A.Helpful.
B.Troublesome.
C.Interesting.
D.Challenging.
【4】What is the purpose of the text?
A.To point out the importance of practice.
B.To introduce the use of VR in teaching.
C.To give information about modern schools.
D.To show the appearance of VR technology.
23、Every one of us gets so used to punctuation marks that not many of us give them a second thought. Actually, the ancient Greeks wrote this way. The lack of punctuation marks probably didn’t bother good readers, though. As they read, they just put pauses where they fit best. Also at this time, sentences switched directions. A sentence read from
left to right. The next one read right to left, and then left to right again, etc. The ancient Romans sometimes punctuated like this: They put something that can separate words in a sentence. The word punctuation actually comes from this idea and the Latin word punctum,
which means a dot.
When the 5th century arrived, there were just two punctuation marks: spaces and points. The spaces separated words while the points showed pauses in reading. Then in the 13th century, a printer named Aldus Manutius tried to standardize punctuation. He always used a period for a complete stop at the end of a sentence. He used a slash (/) to indicate a short pause. Over time, that slash was shortened and curled, and it became the modern comma (逗号).
Since that time, other marks have enlarged the punctuation family. The exclamation mark (感叹号) comes from the Latin word io. It means “exclamation of joy.” The question mark originally started out as the Latin word questio, meaning question. Eventually, scholars put it at the end of a sentence to show a question.
Punctuation even keeps changing nowadays. New marks are coming into existence, and old punctuation marks are used in new ways. Take for example the “interrobang”. This 1962 invention combines the question mark and exclamation mark for times when writers want both. For example, “She did what?” or “How much did you pay for that dress?” Obviously, the interrobang is not widely used or recognized yet, but its invention shows that English is not yet finished with its punctuation.
【1】From the first paragraph, we can know that _______.
A. good readers had trouble reading without punctuation marks

D. the use of punctuation marks can date back to ancient times
【2】The passage is developed _______.
A. by time B. by space
C. by comparison D. by importance
【3】We can learn from the passage that _______.
A. ancient Romans didn’t use any punctuation marks
B. exclamation and question marks came from Latin
C. spaces and slashes were already used before the 5th century
D. Aldus Manutius first started to use commas
【4】What can be concluded from the last paragraph?
A. The combination of two marks will not work.
B. It takes time for people to accept new punctuation marks.
C. Old punctuation marks need to be standardized.
D. Punctuation marks are still changing today.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow (乌鸦) landed on their window.
The father asked his son, “What is this?’’ The son replied, “It is a crow.’’
After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this?” The son said, “Father, I have just told you. It’s a crow!”
After a little while, the old father again asked his son for the third time, “What is this?’’
At this time some expression of impatience was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his father coldly. “It’s a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son for the fourth time, “What is this?”
This time, the son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’? Are you not able to understand this?”
A little while later, the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered (发皱的) diary, which he had maintained since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page. When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:
“Today my little son, aged three, was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I did not feel angry at all but I rather felt love for my curious son.”
