二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Telephone calls in the UK and USA are very similar, with most differences being minor and almost everything being mutually (相互) understandable. However, there are a few interesting differences in how British and Americans speak on the phone, including some potential misunderstandings.

Answering the phone in the UK and USA

The standard way of answering a work phone in English is some part of "Good morning/ afternoon/ evening…Limited/ Corp…Department…Section…speaking. How can/ may I help you?" The only thing that differs in that is that "How can I help you?" is more common in Britain and "How may I help you?" is more standard in the US.

With a home phone or mobile, just answering the phone with "Hello?" is standard in English. If you can see who is calling and know them well, it has become more common to greet them by name straightaway instead, e. g. "Hi Steve. Thanks for calling me back". More informal greetings in that situation would be "Yo, Steve" or just "What's up?" in the US and "Alright Steve?" in the UK, with Americans perhaps more likely to use these kinds of more informal phrases. Americans are also more likely to use affectionate phrases like "Hi Honey" or "What's up, bro?", with the British phrase "Alright, mate" being both less common and not actually being so friendly.

Polite language at the beginning of calls in the UK and USA

"Thanks for…" and "Sorry for…" are not only equally likely in different forms of English, but seem to be very popular at the start of phone calls worldwide. The only small UK/USA difference is the rather cute British verb "ring" in "Thanks for ringing me back" and "Sorry to ring again so soon, but…". The more standard language "Thanks for calling me back" and "Sorry to call again so soon, but…" are used in both the UK and USA.

1Which of the following is the American way of answering a work phone?

A.Good morning. Bibury Systems. How can I help you?

B.Hello. This is Bibury Systems. How can I help you?

C.Good morning. Bibury Systems. How may I help you?

D.Hi. Friend. This is Bibury Systems. How may I help you?

2If Tom says "Alright Steve?" on the phone, what can we infer from it?

A.Tom and Steve are good friends.

    B.They must be from America.

    C.They are both at home.

D.Tom is very polite to Steve.

3Which of the following can best describe the underlined word "affectionate"?

    A.Being happy and polite.

    B.Showing love and care.

    C.Being loosely connected.

    D.Showing care and concern.

4What is the best title for this text?

A.How to Answer the Phone Politely

    B.Misunderstandings in Answering the Phones

C.Small UK/USA differences in Answering the Phones

D.The Differences between British and American English

  • 27、   None of our early ancestors could digest milk as adults because their bodies never had to—milk drinking simply wasnˈt an option. As people began to extract milk from animals, though, some people developed the ability to keep drinking it throughout their lives.

Scientists now know of a milk-related mutation (变异) in our genes—the chemical instructions for life that we carry in almost every cell in our bodies. People who have a mutated form of one particular gene can drink milk just fine. People without the mutation tend to get sick from milk.

To figure out where, and possibly why, milk drinking started, some scientists have been looking at who has the milk-digesting mutation today. Patterns are striking.

Most adults in Northern and Central Europe are able to digest milk—and they do. Cheese and butter and other dairy products are popular in countries such as Sweden, Denmark, Germany and England. Because European settlers dominated North America, most people here can handle milk just fine, as well. That may explain why ice cream is such a popular dessert in the United States.

In much of Africa, Asia and South America, on the other hand, people tend to avoid dairy products because they lead to diarrhea (腹泻) and other stomach problems. That’s why you won’t typically find cheese on the menu at a Chinese, Japanese or Ethiopian restaurant. Native Americans are also unable to digest milk.

Because of these genetic patterns, scientists have long thought that milk drinking started in Northern Europe, where dairy is an institution and the milk-digesting mutation is everywhere.

A recent study painted a different picture. With a computer model, Thomas and his colleagues looked at the spread of the milk-drinking mutation, farming and other related factors. Working backward, the scientists concluded that the first milk-drinkers lived in Central Europe around what’s now Hungary about 7,500 years ago. The practice didn’t start farther north, as scientists had thought before.

  • 28、China started late in network technologies and has lagged behind for years. With the rapid development of wireless technologies, the concept of the Fifth Generation (5G) mobile communication system started to emerge(出现). Although the development of 5G network technology in the international community is still in the research stage, a number of foreign countries and organizations are working on it. In order to catch up with the pace of the times, China also needs to have its own place in such a competitive environment.

Compared with 2G, 3G and 4G, 5G is not independent and brand-new. It is a combination and further development of present mobile communication technology. Besides the speed upgrade, 5G will also meet the requirements of large bandwidth, super high capacity, super dense site, super high reliability and whenever and wherever possible assess.

There are some rapid changes in China’s telecom space. With the 3G network now widely used, and 4G just around the corner, China is now preparing to enter the 5G era. China has started research and development on the 5G network, and plan to launch the network testing by around 2020. It’s expected that a unified standard will be adopted globally with the 5G technology.

Wu Ku, Director of Dept. of Science & Tech., MIIT said.

Wu Hequan from Chinese academy of engineering said, "5G will make it possible to connect one million devices to the so-called Internet of Things within one square meter. In the future, it will also be available on high-speed trains moving as fast as 500 kilometers per hour. In the area of the Internet of Vehicles, it can be used in unmanned vehicles, assisted driving and the management of smart cities."

Wu believes China's future Internet will be faster, more intelligent and more reliable.

Chinese government pays more attention to the development of 5G and adopts a more open attitude. With the joint effort of the industry, China will play an increasing important role in the global 5G development.

  • 29、Eugene O'Neill, who was born in 1888, in New York, was a leading American drama writer and the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1936. His father was a successful touring actor. Because of that, Eugene spent his early childhood in hotels, on trains, and backstage. Although later in his life he grew to hate his father for not giving him security(安全感)in his early years and a loving, comfortable family, he had the theater in his blood.

As a student, O'Neill went to boarding schools(寄宿制学校)but spent the summers in a moderate house his family owned. He left Princeton University in 1907, only about one year after he entered it, to start what he later called his real education in “life experience”。 At the age of 24, he was employed as a reporter and poetry column writer for the New London Telegraph, where he worked for only a few months.

O'Neill didn't cut a figure in playwriting until the summer of 1916, when he was in a peaceful village of Provincetown, Massachusetts, where some young writers and artists had founded an experimental theater. Before that, he had written awkward plays that were hardly accepted by the mainstream of American theater. While O'Neill was only one of those whose plays were produced by the theater, he led the group to success because of his contribution within the next few years. Between 1916 and 1920, the theater produced all of O'Neill's one-act plays. By the time his first full-length play, Beyond the Horizon, was produced on Broadway on February 2, 1920 at the Morosco Theater, the young playwright already had a small fame.

Theater critics(评论家)spoke highly of Beyond the Horizon for its tragic realism. The play brought O'Neill more public attention, as well as his first Pulitzer Prize. Besides that, he won another three for Anna Christie, Strange Interlude, and Long Day's Journey into Night. Over the next two decades, O'Neill continued to gain fame nationally and globally. He became the most widely translated and produced dramatist after Shakespeare and Bernard Shaw.

【1】What might inspire O'Neill's love for theater?

    A.His father's job.

    B.The support of his family.

C.Hotel rooms he had lived in.

D.Stories he had heard on trains.

【2】Why did O'Neill drop out of Princeton University in 1907?

B.He wanted to receive real education from life.

C.He got a job from the New London Telegraph.

D.He was quite unsatisfied with the university life.

【3】What does the underlined phrase "cut a figure" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Show interest.

    B.Hold a degree.

    C.Attract attention.

    D.Receive an award.

【4】What can we learn about O'Neill's Beyond the Horizon?

A.It inspired him to create another three dramas.

B.It drew theater critics' attention to tragic realism.

C.It helped him win more fame in the field of theater.

D.It made him the most widely translated dramatist.
