二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Guns have a special place in American culture, and though not everyone agrees on whether or not they are a good thing, there is no mistaking that they will be part of the cultural landscape for some time. To answer the question, no, not everyone has a gun. 【1】

Americans use guns for one of two uses: either for sport, where they can use them on firing ranges or for hunting in approved areas, or for self-protection. The latter is where most people begin to take sides, either arguing for the removal of guns from society or allowing more people to have them. There are organizations and community groups for both sides and both sides have strong feelings.

Legally, there are restrictions on gun owners. 【2】 Only certain kinds of weapons can be purchased by the public, and that excludes automatic weapon and military grade weaponry. Gun owners must transport their weapon in a safe way, unloaded and in most cases, out of sight. Special—concealed carry permits from the police station must be obtained for people who want to wear weapon, and most people are rejected for this kind of permit. 【3】 Criminals steal guns or buy them illegally to commit crimes, and the news is full of terrible stories of what happened next. Occasionally a child will get a hold of legal weapon and accidentally hurt themselves or others.

It is important to remember, however, that the news stories that make the United States seem like a dangerous place are deceiving; guns are not everywhere or constant. 【4】 After all, America is a safe place to live.

A.You are only allowed to purchase a firearm if you have had a background check and meet certain legal requirements.

B.There have been many enlightening articles on gun control in America.

C.If you were to visit the United States for two months the only gun you might see is in a museum or on a police officer.

D.Less than fifty percent of homes in the United States own weapons, and many of those homes are in rural areas where guns may have a greater use.

E.More people are deciding to legalize their gun transactions instead of buying them on the black market.

F.What alarms people the most about American gun culture are the illegal guns and shooting, which make some places feel unsafe.

  • 28、Making friends is a skill like many other skills. It improves with practice. If you want to meet people and make friends, you must be willing to take some actions. You must first go where there are people. You won’t make friends staying home alone. Join a club or a group. Talking with those who like the same things as you do is much easier. Or join someone in some activities. Many people are nervous when talking to new people. After all meeting strangers means facing the unknown. And it’s human nature to feel a bit uncomfortable about the unknown. Most of our fears about dealing with new people come from doubts about ourselves. We imagine other people are judging us or finding us too tall or too short, too this or too that. But don’t forget that they must be feeling the same way. Try to accept yourself as you are and try to put the other person at ease. You’ll both feel more comfortable.

Try to act selfconfidently even if you don’t feel that way. When you enter a room full of strangers, such as a new classroom, walk tall and straight, look directly at other people and smile.

If you see someone you’d like to speak to, say something. Don’t wait for the other person to start a conversation.

Just meeting someone new does not mean that you will make friends with that

person—friendship is based on mutual liking and “give and take”. It takes time and effort to

    develop.

【1】The best title of the text may be________.

    A.Friendship

    【3】Friendship is based on________.

    A.selfconfidence

    B.meeting more unknown people

C.more talking and smiling to people

D.taking from and giving to people

【4】Which of the following statements is NOT true?

    A.Making friends needs practising.

B.Making friends needs to be more active in starting a conversation.

C.When meeting someone, make him feel nice and starting a conversation.

D.Before making friends with someone, judge if he’s too this or too that.

  • 29、   In a world with so many countries, religions, tribes and customs, it is impossible for everyone to like everything. While we have come a long way since civilization began, some communities are stuck with age-old traditions.

    Famadihana-dance with the dead

A funeral(葬礼)tradition followed by the Malagasy tribe in Madagascar, people dance with dead bodies as part of the Famadihana custom. After bringing bodies of ancestors from their burial place, they re-wrap them in fresh cloth and dance around the tomb to live music. The ritual is followed once in seven years, but has been in the decline.

    Venezuela-don't show up on time

Venezuela are just like Indians! Reaching on time is considered rude in Venezuela and it is recommended to reach at least 15 minutes later than the scheduled time. Guests who reach on time are looked down upon as being too eager and greedy. Well, Venezuela should take some cue from Indians!

India-throw the baby for good luck

This custom is mostly followed in Karnataka where newborn babies are thrown off the 50-feet high above Sri Santeswar temple. The babies are obviously caught by the family in a cloth. Couples who are blessed with a baby take a vow at the temple following this 500-year-old tradition, which is believed to bring good luck to the babies.

    Scotland-just blacken the bride

Having some fun before the wedding is great, but this pre-wedding custom in Scotland doesn't seem to have a lot of fun for the bride. The custom involves throwing eggs, spoilt milk and basically, all things disgusting at her. The "blackened bride" is then taken around the town. The custom is a metaphor for the tough life that the bride might have to go through after the wedding. The tradition prepares her for the new chapter as after going through this, all marital(婚姻的)problems will look tiny.

【1】Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “ritual”?

    A.Tradition.

    B.Manner.

    C.Culture.

    D.Belief.

【2】What would be considered impolite according to the text?

A.Dancing with the dead in Famadihana.

B.Showing up on time in Venezuela.

C.Throwing the baby for good luck in India.

    D.Blackening the bride in Scotland.

【3】Why is there the custom-blacken the bride in Scotland?

    A.To disguise the bride.

B.To pray for the good luck for the bride.

C.To show the hardship of marriage to the bride.

D.To get the bride ready for the may-be-hard marriage life.

五、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Christmas came, and Stewart gathered the children at the dinner table. He tried to prepare all of their favorite food because he had no extra money for individual gifts.

“Lucy, I baked your favorite apple pie. Sean, I made sure to get some baked spaghetti (意大利面条) from the store. And Gregory, I baked a whole chicken. Your favorites! Merry Christmas, my sweet children!” Stewart told them.

After eating dinner together, Stewart took his three kids outside to make a huge snowman and had a snowball fight. It was a family tradition that Stewart wanted to keep alive even though his wife was no longer with them.

Many years passed, and Stewart’s kids all had families of their own. And they were all too busy to visit Stewart, although they didn’t live far away. So Stewart spent most of the year alone.

Stewart would often sit in a wheelchair and look at old photos of his family. He came across one particular photo where he and his children were making a snowman outside the house. They were happy, and the lovely smiles on his children’s faces were priceless.

Stewart waited for his children to come on Christmas Eve, looking out of the window. “How I wish...” he said to himself as he watched others having fun together in their backyards.

Stewart was sure that each member of his family had forgotten his invitation once again until he heard a short knock on the door.

    “Who is it?” Stewart asked.

“Hi, Grandpa,” a small boy said after he opened the door.

“Tim! What a surprise!” Stewart smiled. “Is it just you? How did you get here alone?!”

Tim nodded sadly, “Even on Christmas Eve, my parents don’t notice me. They’re too busy with work. I know how much you love Christmas, Grandpa, so I walked here.”

Stewart wanted to cheer his grandson up, so he went to get dressed. “Well, you and I will have a happy Christmas together,” Stewart told Tim. “Kids deserve to play in the snow every Christmas, ”he added.
