二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、If you are a fruit grower — or would like to become one — take advantage of Apple Day to see what’s around. It’s called Apple Day but in practice it’s more like Apple Month. The day itself is on October 21, but since it has caught on, events now spread out over most of October around Britain.

Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see, and often taste, a wide variety of apples. To people who are used to the limited choice of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets, it can be quite an eye opener to see the range of classical apples still in existence, such as Decio which was grown by the Romans. Although it doesn’t taste of anything special, it’s still worth a try, as is the knobbly (多疙瘩的) Cat’s Head which is more of a curiosity than anything else.

There are also varieties developed to suit specific local conditions. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you’ll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it, so it’s a pipe dream for most apple lovers who fall for it.

At the events, you can meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family affairs, children are well catered for with apple-themed fun and games.

Apple Days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards (果园). If you want to have a real orchard experience, try visiting the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent.

【1】What can people do at the apple events?

    A.Attend experts’ lectures.

    B.Visit fruit-loving families.

C.Plant fruit trees in an orchard.

    D.Taste many kinds of apples.

【2】What can we learn about Decio?

    A.It is a new variety.

    B.It has a strange look.

    C.It is rarely seen now.

    D.It has a special taste.

【3】What does the underlined phrase “a pipe dream” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.A practical idea.

    B.An unrealistic hope.

    C.A brilliant plan.

    D.A selfish desire.

【4】What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To show how to grow apples.

    B.To introduce an apple festival.

    C.To help people select apples.

    D.To promote apple research.

  • 27、   Google is getting further into the business of saving lives. Today, it announced that users of its Android phones in New Zealand and Greece will receive warnings of earthquakes about to strike their locations. And those earthquakes will be detected(探测) not by the usual seismometers(地震仪),but by the phones themselves.

Earthquakes are a well-known threat in both countries, but neither has an operational warning system. That created an opportunity to make a difference, says Marc, the project's lead engineer.

Traditional warning systems use seismometers to detect an earthquake's size, then send a warning, by smartphone or loudspeakers, to residents. These systems are powerful but they are expensive to develop. An earthquake warning system that can do without this expense and depend on smartphones has great potential (潜力)globally, says Meier, who studies earthquake warning systems. “If you can do it with just the phones, that's a shortcut.

Android phones have been publicly detecting earthquakes since last year. It can remove false(假的)alarms like the shaking caused by the sound of thunderstorms. So far, Android phones have detected more than 1000 quakes worldwide. And the alerts have performed well in terms of speed when compared with Shake Alert and Japan's warning system, Allen says. The phones also detected a quake that originated just north of Samos, a Greek island close to Turkey, in late October 2020. “We could really show that, if we had alerting in place, we would have provided alerts in Greece,” Allen says.

【1】The underlined word “shortcut” in Paragraph 3 most probably means “________。”

A.a way that is shorter than the usual one

B.a path that is direct towards the destination

C.a quicker way than usual to achieve something

D.a means of ordering a computer to perform a function

【2】What's the disadvantage of traditional warning systems?

    A.They are costly.

    B.They are 'powerless.

    C.They have little potential.

    D.They feel the quake slowly.

【3】What's Allen's attitude to detecting quakes by the phones?

    A.Negative.

    B.Positive.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Uncaring.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.The Project Provides Alerts In Greece

    B.Phone Warning Systems Are Powerful

    C.Earthquakes Are A Well-known Threat

D.Google Uses Phones To Detect Earthquakes

  • 28、Have you ever complained why life is so tiring? Does the sky sometimes seem dark to you? Are your studies sometimes not successful? Well, friends, cheer up and smile all the time. If you see the world with your warm heart, you’ll find that the whole world smiles to you.

While in school, sometimes you are tired of your lessons, but have you ever noticed the happy smile on your teacher’s face when you did a good job?

One day it is fine. Just before you go out, it suddenly starts to rain. Maybe you would feel very sad and start to complain about the weather. But dear friends, why don’t you sit down and listen to the free concerts that the nature offers you? And with the timely rain, crops in the fields will grow better and better and farmers will have a good harvest.

Although everyone wants to succeed in what he tries to do, sometimes failure can’t be avoided. I think failure is not terrible, and the terrible thing is that we are afraid of it and give up hope. When we face failure, we must be confident in ourselves, draw a useful lesson from it and try our best to finish what we have decided to do. As a popular saying goes, “Failure is the mother of success”.

Attitude decides everything. With an optimistic attitude life is easy and pleasant. Let’s smile to whatever we meet and the whole world will smile to us.

    【1】 People sometimes complain _________.

    A. the sky is always dark

    B. their studies are successful

【3】The best title for the passage is_______.

    A. Smile and the World Smiles to You

    C. Failure is the Mother of Success

  • 29、As a girl who has lived in both places, I can tell you that country living certainly beats the city life! Living in a village has advantages that simply can’t be bought at any price.

In the city, I was tired of the sounds of horns blowing and sirens blaring. In the country, I’m surrounded by the singing of birds, along with the pleasant sound of a cool breeze flowing through the trees.

On congested city streets, I had to deal with tired drivers and careless pedestrians. On winding country roads, I have to try my best to ignore the postcard—like beauty of the farmland and forests so I can keep my eyes on the road.

Yes, country living is the lifestyle that I, like most people who have had the opportunity to experience it, prefer. Instead of salespeople knocking on my door hoping to leave with some of my money, I have warm, friendly neighbors dropping by with baskets of fresh vegetables from their gardens — not to sell of course. They simply enjoy sharing the rewards of their country lifestyles with others.

Living in the country means that I can get up at 8:00 in the morning and enjoy a leisurely jog down a path or simply sit on a riverbank under a big tree with a fishing pole in my hand.

Yes, I do enjoy my country lifestyle! Having spent much of my life living in many cities around the world, I can now enjoy the peace and quietness of my country home. For me, a country lifestyle makes it easy to look forward to the next day!

【1】The passage mainly tells us why__________.

A.people hate living in the city

    B.the writer loves country living

C.people living in the country are happy every day

D.more and more people are moving to the country

【2】The underlined word “congested” in Paragraph 3 probably means_______.

    A.long

    B.crowded

    C.lifeless

    D.comfortable

【3】Which of the following statements is true?

A.In the city, the author is surrounded by the singing of birds.

B.In the country, the author is tired of sounds of horns blowing and sirens blaring.

C.The author prefers to living in the country.

D.The author can’t enjoy the peace and quietness of her country home.

【4】What can we infer from Paragraph 4?

A.All people prefer the life in the country.

B.Nobody in the city likes salespeople.

C.People living in cities are unfriendly to each other.

D.The writer likes her new neighbors very much.

After I finished my senior year, I got a part-time job working at a local coffee shop. I had thought that the job would be easy and, for the most part, stress-free. I pictured myself pouring the best delicious coffees, and becoming close friends with the regular customers.

What I hadn't counted on were the people with many orders who chose to use the drive-through window, or the customers who felt there was always too much sugar, too little ice, or not enough skimmed milk. There were moments when I was annoyed. However, I kept at it.

On a rainy day, one of my regular customers came in looking depressed and defeated. I asked what the problem was and if I could help, but the customer wouldn't tell any details. He just said he felt like pulling the sheets up over his head in the bed, and staying in it for a few years. I knew exactly how he felt.

Before he left, I handed him a bag along with his iced coffee. He looked at me questioningly because he hadn't ordered anything but the coffee. He opened the bag and saw that I had given him his favourite type of doughnut.

“It's on me,” I told him. “Have a nice day.”

He smiled and thanked me before turning around and heading back out into the rain.

The next day was a horrible one. The rain poured down and everyone seemed to be using the drive-through window. I spent my afternoon leaning out of the window, and handing people their orders. I tried to smile but it was difficult, as they sat in their temperature-controlled cars with the windows rolled up, while I dealt with huge drops of water hanging from my hat, and a shirt that was entirely wet around the collar. On top of that, no one felt like tipping that day. Every time I looked into our tip jar, with its small amount of pennies, I grew more depressed.

    Paragraph 1:

Around seven o'clock, however, my day took a turn for the better.
