26、Located in Pisa, the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy has become the sign of Italy. It is the third oldest structure in Pisa’s Cathedral Square. There are eight floors in the Leaning Tower of Pisa including the observation deck at the top. The weight of the tower is about 14,500 metric tons. There are amazing facts of the Leaning Tower of Pisa that we will mention here.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa was not originally intended to lean, but because it was built on soft soils the tower gradually leaned to one side. Prior to its restoration (修复) from 1990 to 2001, the tower had a tilt (倾斜) of 5.5 degrees. Many people think that it will fall one day. Millions of tourists come to the lawns around the tower to take the classic photo pretending to hold up or knock down the tower.
It is said that you must visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa during the day. At night the shops are closed and it appears unimpressive. But, if you plan to visit on a full moon night, the tower will look charming. Mornings are the best time to beat the crowds. Summer in Pisa is very hot and wet, but you can expect rain in fall and winter.
Even though some people regard the tower as an engineering failure owing to the tilt, the tower has acquired a special place in history. The tower has also been used for experiments by the famous Italian scientist named Galileo Galilei. He is believed to have thrown two balls of different mass from the tower to prove that their falling time is not related to their mass.
On your tour you should not miss various places of interest near the Leaning Tower of Pisa including Lucca, Florence, and Santa Maria della Spina.

27、 LONE TREE, colorado-patanjali Rao, a 15-year-old Colorado high school student and young scientist, who has used artificial intelligence (AI) and created apps to deal with social problems, has been named Time magazine's first-ever "Kid of the Year".
Time says Rao stood out for creating a world-wide community of young inventors and inspiring them to go after their goals. Rao insists that starting out small doesn't matter, as long as you have a passion (热爱)for it.
Rao's sense of invention started early. At age 12, she developed a portable device to discover lead in water. She has also created an app called Kindly that uses artificial intelligence to help prevent cyberbullying (网络欺凌). It allows teens to type in a word or phrase to find out if the words they are using are bullying and lets them decide what they are sending.
She said that "Work is going to be in our generation's hands pretty soon. So if no one else is going to do it, I'm going to do it.”
Rao has partnered with schools, museums, and science, technology, engineering and math organizations, and other societies to work for thousands of other students.
In a world where science is increasingly questioned or challenged, Rao insists that devotion to science is an act of kindness and the best way that a younger generation can better the world. “We have science in everything we're involved in, and I think the biggest thing to put out there is that science is cool, innovating is cool, and anybody can be an innovator," Rao says.
"Anybody can do science.”

28、阅读理解
阅读下列四篇短文,从每小题后所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。
They wear the latest fashions with the most up-to-date accessories(配饰). Yet these are not girls in their teens or twenties but women in their sixties and seventies. A generation which would once only wear old-fashioned clothes is now favouring the same high street looks worn by those half their age.
Professor Julia Twigg, a social policy expert, said, “Women over 75 are now shopping for clothes more frequently than they did when they were young in the 1960s. In the 1960s buying a coat for a woman was a serious matter. It was an expensive item that they would purchase only every three or four years — now you can pick one up at the supermarket whenever you wish to. Fashion is a lot cheaper and people get tired of things more quickly. ”
Professor Twigg analyzed family expending(支出)data and found that while the percentage of spending on clothes and shoes by women had stayed around the same—and 5 or 6 per cent of spending—the amount of clothes bought had risen sharply.
The professor said, “Clothes are now 70 percent cheaper than they were in the 1960s because of the huge expansion of production in the Far East. In the 1960s Leeds was the heart of the British fashion industry and that was where most of the clothes came from, but now almost all of our clothes are sourced elsewhere. Everyone is buying more clothes but in general we are not spending more money on them.”
Fashion designer Angela Barnard, who runs her own fashion business in London, said older women were much more affected by celebrity(名流) style than in previous years .
She said, “When people see stars such as Judi Dench and Helen Mirren looking attractive and fashionable in their sixties, they want to follow them. Older women are much more aware of celebrities. There’s also the boom in TV programmes showing people how they can change their look, and many of my older customers do yoga to stay in shape well in their fifties. When I started my business a few years ago, my older customers tended to be very rich, but now they are what I would call ordinary women. My own mother is 61 and she wears the latest fashions in a way she would never have done ten years ago.”
【1】Professor Twigg found that, compared with the 1960s, _______.
A. the price of clothes has generally fallen by 70%
B. the spending on clothes has increased by 5% or 6%
C. people spend 30% less than they did on clothes
D. the amount of clothes bought has risen by 5% or 6%
【2】What can we learn about old women in terms of fashion?
A. They are often ignored by fashion designers.
B. They are now more easily influenced by stars.
C. They are regarded as pioneers in the latest fashion.
D. They are more interested in clothes because of their old age.
【3】 It can be concluded that old women tend to wear the latest fashions today mainly because .
A. they get tired of things more quickly
B. TV shows teach them how to change their look
C. they are in much better shape now
D. clothes are much cheaper than before
【4】Which is the best possible title of the passage?

29、Little Monty was son of a poor farmer. When he was in high school, he was asked to write a passage about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up. That night he wrote a seven-page passage describing his dream of owning a big farm. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a picture of his farm, showing the design of all the buildings, the animals and the track. He put a great deal of his heart into the homework and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, “See me after class.”
The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, “Why did I receive an F?” The teacher said, “For a young boy like you the dream is impossible. You have no money. You come from a poor family. You have no support from your friends. Owning a big farm needs a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the buying of your animals and later you’ll have to pay more to hire people to feed them. There’s no way you could ever do it.”
The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, “Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for you.” Finally, after a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. He stated, “You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.”
Twenty years later, a teacher led his 30 students to visit a beautiful and big farm. When meeting the owner of the farm, the teacher said, “Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough determination not to give up on yours.”
“Don’t let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what,” Monty at last concluded.
【1】What was the score Monty received for his paper?
A.F.
B.A.
C.D.
D.G
【2】Why did the boy turn in the same paper without any change?
A.Because he was angry about his teacher’s words.
B.Because his father stopped him from rewriting it.
C.Because he had put too much of his heart into it.
D.Because he made up his mind to follow his dream.
【3】The author wrote this passage mainly to ___________.
A.warn people against dream stealers
B.tell people how to describe their goals
C.encourage people to keep their dreams
D.teach people how to write their papers
30、How many people can speak English? Some experts estimate that 1.5 billion people—around one-quarter of the world’s population—can communicate reasonably well in English.
Never in recorded history has a language been as ____ spoken as English is today. The reason why millions are learning it is simple: it is the language of international business and ____, the key to prosperity. It is not just that multinational companies conduct their business in English; it is the language in which Germans speak to Indonesians.
David Graddol, the author of English Next, says it is tempting to view the story of English simply as a victory for is native speakers in North America, Britain and Ireland, and Australia—but that would be a ____ . Global English has entered a more complex stage, changing in ways that the English-speaking countries cannot control and might ____ .
An important question one might ask is: whose English will it be in the future? Non-native speakers now ____ native English speakers by three to one. The majority of ____ in English today take place between non-native speakers. According to David Graddol, many business meetings held in English appear to run more ____ when there are no native English speakers present. This is because native speakers are often ____ at ensuring that they are understood in international discussions. They tend to think they need to avoid longer Latin-based words, but in fact ____ problems are more often caused by their use of idioms, metaphors, and phrasal verbs. On one occasion, at an international student conference in Amsterdan, conducted in English, the only British representative was asked to be “less ____ ” so that the others could understand her.
Professor Barbara Seidlhofer, Professor of English at the University of Vienna, records spoken English ____ between speakers of the language around the world. She says her team has noticed that non-native speakers are ____ standard English grammar in several ways. Even the most experienced speakers sometimes omit the “s” in the third person singular. Many omit definite and indefinite articles where they are ____ in standard English, or put them in where standard English does not use them. Nouns that are not plural in native-speaker English are used as plurals by non-native speakers (e.g., “informations”, “knowledges”, “advices” ). Other variations include “make a discussion”, “discuss about something”, or “phone to somebody”.
Many native English speakers will insist that these are not variations, they are mistakes. “Knowledges” and “phone to somebody” are simply ____ . Many non-native speakers who teach English around the world would agree. But language changes, and so do ideas of grammatical ____.
