  • 22、   As we live longer and technology continues its rapid development, we can imagine a future where machines will enlarge our human abilities and help us make better life choices, from health to wealth. Through our dialogue and digital pieces, AI will understand our life goals and wishes, our duties and limitations. It will help us plan different life events, so we can spend more time enjoying life’s moments.

The ability for artificial intelligence to understand the complexities and slight differences of human conversation is, however, one hurdle. There are several thousand known living languages in the world today. Adding to the difficulties are the varied ways words are shared and used across different cultures, including grammar, levels of education and styles of the speakers. Google Duplex, the technology supporting Google Assistant, which places phone calls using a natural-sounding human voice instead of a robotic one, is an early attempt to address such challenges in human communications. But these are just initial whispers in voice of AI’s long journey.

Beyond making reservations and conducting simple dialogues, virtual assistants will need to become far more useful and further fit into the parts of our everyday lives. Not only will they need to foresee what we need before we ask, they also need to understand the context of our conversations and react accordingly. Imagine a snow day when school is canceled for the kids. Knowing that you must now stay at home with your children, your phone would remind you, asking if you’d like your meetings moved to the following day. Alternatively, imagine how much more pleasant your journey home from a business trip would be if your phone could automatically arrange for a ride waiting to pick you up at the airport, based on your travel plan, location, and habits. The possibilities are endless.

1What do we know about AI?

A.They narrow our abilities. B.They limit our better choice.

C.They don’t know our limitations. D.They help us enjoy life better.

2What makes it hard for AI to understand what humans say?

A.Low level of speakers. B.Imperfection of AI.

C.Varieties of languages and cultures. D.Similarities between languages.

3Which word can best describe the author’s attitude towards AI?

    A.Doubtful. B.Approving.

    C.Negative. D.Critical.

4Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

    A.AI Will Replace Humans

B.AI Will Set Goals for Us.

C.AI Will Be Part of Our Daily Lives.

    D.AI Will Meet Challenges.

  • 23、Do you like shopping? Or does the thought of wandering round the shops fill you with terror? For some of us, shopping is an enjoyable way of spending our spare time and our money. For me, it’s something I would rather avoid. Thank goodness for the Internet! It’s more convenient to buy CDs, electrical items, even food, from the comfort of your sofa. But that’s not the only reason:price is an important factor. We can buy goods and services cheaper online. But sometimes the problem is knowing what to buy. This has led to a type of shopping called "showrooming".

Showrooming is something I’ve done. I will go to a shop to see, touch and try out products but then go home and buy them online at a knock-down price. I’m not alone in doing this. Research by a company called Foolproof, found 24% of people showroomed while Christmas shopping in 2013.

Amy Cashman, head of Technology at TNS UK, says the reasons for this new shopping habit are that"people are lacking time, lacking money and they want security about the products they are buying". She explains that consumers are not only shopping online at home but they are using the Internet in store or on their smartphones to shop around.

But does this mean technology will kill shops? Certainly shops will change. They will have to offer more competitive prices or encourage people to buy more by giving in-store discounts or free gifts.

We mustn’t forget that buying in a shop means you can get expert advice from the sales assistant and you can get good aftercare. It’s good to speak to a real human rather than look at a faceless computer screen but at least by showrooming, you get the best of both worlds!

1The two questions in Paragraph l are raised to .

    A. introduce the topic   B. give two examples

    C. compare different opinions   D. get answers from readers

2What does showrooming mean in the text?

    A. Trying in shops and buying online.   B. Showing products in a room.

    C. Buying something in a store.   D. Shopping on the Internet.

3According to Amy Cashman, which is not the reason for showrooming?

    A. The lack of time.   B. The comfort of the sofa.

    C. The shortness of money.   D. The security of the product.

    4The author’s attitude towards showrooming is .

    A. critical   B. neutral

    C. supportive   D. casual

  • 24、The Best Films of 2022

    Tar

Set in the international world of Western classical music, the film centers on Lydia Tar. She is widely considered as one of the greatest living composer-conductors and first-ever female music director of a German orchestra. It is an unfolding thriller about a brilliant artist who’s destroyed by her own appetites. So many of the people who see “Tar” come away believing that Lydia Tar actually exists.

    The Fabelmans

Spiclberg was right to wait this long to tell the story of his youth on film. He has made a vivid and well-structured biography that looks back in love and anger. The movie not only aches at memories of watching the separation of his parents, but also tells teen tales of romance and prejudice. And we can feel Spielberg’s enthusiasm in the medium he would revolutionize.

    Turn Every Page

If Lizzic Gottlicb’s documentary about Robert Caro and Robert Gottlicb were just a piece of good-old-days literary work, it wouldn’t be a deep and satisfying movie. Robert Caro, who is an outstanding author of “The Power Broker”, and Robert Gottlieb, the legendary editor who has guided all of Caro’s books, emerge as stimulating giants. What unites them is their devotion to the civilizing glory of the word.

    The Musical

The plot of the movie is about Evan, a New York kid suffering from his parents’ divorce, as he tries to absorb himself into small-town Indiana and stage a successful Coming-of-Age Day. The more we see the movie directed by Tamra Davis, the more we will be addicted to the magic of the songs and the energy released by the musical sequences.

【1】What is the setting of the first movie Tar?

    A.Germany history.

    B.Literary world.

    C.Classical music.

    D.Indiana culture.

【2】Which movie would you choose if you like documentary?

    A.Tar.

    B.The Musical.

    C.Turn Every Page.

    D.The Fabelmans.

【3】What do the movies The Fabelmans and The Musical have in common?

A.They are both shot in New York.

B.They focus on teenagers’ school life.

C.They are both biographies of the directors.

D.They show the influence of parents’ relationship.
