21、 How do top athletes handle defeat and disappointment? Can an athlete turn to his or her teammates for support or encouragement? The following top performers' responses will be helpful to you.
Think positively
Siri Lindley is a top triathlete(三项全能运动员), competing in events that combine long-distance running, swimming and cycling. "I try to use what I learn from each loss to make me stronger and more determined," she says. "Then I pick my head up and start thinking positive, and I visualize myself succeeding the next time. Let the losses make you stronger.”
Stick with it
Allen Johnson won a gold medal in the 110-meter hurdles at the 1996 Olympics, but he knows that he can't win every race. "When I don't win, I have to accept the fact that I made a mistake or that someone was better on that day," he says. "You can't be the best every day, but you can be the best on some day."
Pick yourself up
Figure skater Michael Weiss is one of the best in his sport, but there have been a lot of failures along the way. "I look at failing as a part of growing," he says. "When you lose and you are feeling down, without teammates to lift you up, you have to be strong enough to pick yourself up."
Learn from mistakes
Gymnast Shannon Miller has won several Olympic medals, including two golds. "If I make a mistake in the middle of a competition, I try to forget about it because I have to go on," she says. 22、As the world approaches the second anniversary of the declaration of the Covid-19 pandemic by the World Health Organization(WHO), on March 11, more nations are rolling out, or are discussing the possibility of, fourth doses of coronavirus vaccine for their most vulnerable. In the United States, leading public health officials say they are “very carefully” monitoring if or when fourth doses might be needed.
Israel was the first nation to roll out fourth doses, announcing in December that adults 60 and older, medical workers and people with suppressed(抑制的) immune systems were qualified to receive the extra shot if at least four months have passed since their third dose. More recently, the Public Health Agency of Sweden announced last week that second booster doses are recommended for everyone 80 and older in the country. The United Kingdom’s Department of Health and Social Care announced Monday that an extra booster dose(加强剂量) of coronavirus vaccine will be offered in the spring to adults 75 and older, residents in care homes for older adults and immunosuppressed(免疫功能不全) people 12 and older.
In the US, health officials emphasized late last year that fourth doses were not yet needed and said it was too early to be discussing a potential fourth dose of coronavirus vaccine for most people. Now, the US Food and Drug Administration “is indeed continually looking at the emerging data on the pandemic and variants(变种) in the United States and overseas in order to evaluate the potential utility and composition of booster doses,” FDA spokesperson Alison Hunt wrote in an email to CNN on Friday.
She confirmed that although Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation, has noted that there is still much uncertainty as to how the pandemic may further evolve, he also has said it is possible that a fourth dose might be recommended as we move into fall. A fall timeline exist at the same time of the administration of flu shots, which could be convenient for people and makes sense scientifically because respiratory(呼吸的) viruses – like the coronavirus – tend to peak in the winter months that follow.
【1】What can we know from the first paragraph?
A.The WHO believes the Covid-19 will affect people for another two years.
B.The WHO has asked countries to evaluate the possibility of a fourth vaccine.
C.Many countries are making a fourth dose of Covid-19 vaccine available.
D.The US are cautiously developing the fourth dose of Covid-19 vaccine.
【2】Which of the following statements is correct?
A.Israel was unwilling to roll out the fourth dose.
B.The elderly people must be given a fourth dose.
C.People aged 12 and over in the UK with immunosuppressed will be given a booster dose.
D.Sweden recommended a second dose for every Swiss aged 80 and over.
【3】What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A.Health officials in the United States do not believe a fourth dose is needed currently.
B.FDA is assessing possible effects of booster doses through analyzing related data.
C.Alison believed it impossible that a fourth dose might be suggested in autumn.
D.People are most likely to contract respiratory diseases before winter.
【4】Where is this text most likely from?
A.A news website.

23、 The secret to living longer could be as simple as picking up your walking pace, according to a new study. Researchers from the University of Sydney found that walking at a brisk(快的) or fast pace was associated with a risk reduction of 24 percent for any cause of death.
This effect was even more obvious in older age group, with fast walkers over the age of 60 reducing their risk of death by a surprising 53 percent. Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis, who led the study, explained, “A fast pace is generally five to six kilometers per hour, but it really depends on a walker’s fitness levels; an alternatives indicator is to walk at a pace that makes you slightly out of breath or sweaty.”
In the study, the researchers looked at the results of 11 surveys from 1994 to 2008, in which participants recorded their walking pace, as well as age, sex and BMI. The analysis showed that walking at an average pace was associated with a 20 percent risk reduction for all-cause mortality(死亡率) compared with walking at a slow pace, while walking at a brisk or fast pace was associated with a risk reduction of 24 percent.
The researchers hope the findings will encourage the development of public health message about the benefits of walking pace. Professor Stamatakis added, “These analyses suggest that increasing walking pace may be a straightforward way for people to improve heart health and risk for premature mortality--- providing a simple message for public health campaigns to promote.
“Especially in situations when walking more isn’t possible due to time pressures or a less walking-friendly environment, walking faster may be a good option to get the heart rate up--- one that most people can easily add to their lives.”
【1】Who benefit most from walking fast?
A. Cancer sufferers. B. The elderly.
C. Those who have heart problems. D. Those who have high BMI.
【2】What decides how fast a person can walk according to Professor Stamatakis?
A. His/Her fitness levels. B. His/Her ages.
C. His/Her will. D. His/Her BMI.
【3】Why can walking fast reduce death rate?
A. Most people like doing it. B. It benefits the heart.
C. It reduces cancer mortality. D. Most people can do it easily.
【4】What is the main idea of the text?
A. Walking is easy exercise for people to do.
B. Walking has received little attention until now.
C. More and more people are walking fast for health.
D. A fast walking pace can benefit people’s health.
24、Matt Doogue, a 34-year-old nature photographer, had been suffering from depression when he first found his passion for taking pictures of insects and his work is now featured in National Geographic. He says that he tried to take his own life nine years ago after hitting rock bottom. “In the beginning, I was so paranoid (多疑的) and angry that I couldn’t leave the house,” says Doogue. “When I attempted to end my life, I knew I needed to see someone. I went to the doctors and got treatment, but I knew that I needed something more and that’s when I started photography.”
Now a dad of two, Doogue found that looking at insects through a camera helped him in ways he could never have imagined and it proved to be the lifeline he needed. It had a calming effect that helped him to disconnect from stress; and his astonishing images, showing insects and spiders in amazing detail against brightly colored backgrounds, caught the eye of publishers at National Geographic. “I ended up as one of their featured photographers,” recalled Doogue. “It was the peak of my career. It was incredible.”
Originally from Salford, Greater Manchester, he now lives in Armadale, West Lothian, Scotland. Though he fears that Scotland is in the middle of an epidemic (流行病) of male suicide, he believes that sharing his love of nature photography can help others to cope with their mental health issues as well. “I think the problem is this man-up approach; the idea that men need to be strong puts so much pressure on young males to be fine all the time,” says Doogue. “This is why I try and be so open about my own experience. Whenever I am out with my camera, I don’t think about my other worries. It is just me and the environment around me. You can lose yourself in a spider making its web.”
