  • 21、   Four things that you can't miss in Macao.

Macao Tower AJ Hackett Bungee Jump

The Macao Tower, 338 meters tall, is the world's 10th highest tower, with a variety of activities, such as gambling, eating and entertainment. One of the acclaimed activities is the bungee jump. The AJ Hackett Macao Tower Bungee Jump is 233 meters high, making it the highest commercial bungee jump in the world. Raise your arms and off you go! If you are not daring enough to jump that height, you can try the skywalk on the 57th floor --- it's still remarkable.

    Grabbing a traditional Portuguese dinner

Macao was colonized by Portugal before 1999. As a result, Portuguese culture is deeply immersed into many comers of Macao. Many Portuguese settled and opened Portuguese restaurants in the special administrative region, but the flavor is more adaptable to Chinese people.

Marking at the Ruins of St. Paul

However, after three intense fires in 1595, 1601 and 1835, the church was seriously damaged. It is beyond belief that after the vigorous cycles of rebuilding and fires, the huge surface and the front stairway remain unburned.

  • 22、“To be a musician, it’s like fulfilling a part of your life that can’t be replaced. It’s something that I enjoy and I love to do and I get a satisfaction from it.”

It was very amazing and he decided to play the trumpet. 【2】 Then in Houston, Texas in 1954, Richard was approached by Jeff Brown, the manager of musician Ray Charles. • 23、Consumerism is a phenomenon which lies in the tendency of production and buying ever-greater amounts of different goods and services. It not only has an impact on the lifestyle of individuals, but also determines technological and financial progress of the whole states.

Firstly, consumerism enables people to improve the quality of their lives. As Llewellyn Harrison Rockwell states in his article “In Defense of Consumerism”, in 1900 the average life length of women was about 48 years, and of men — 46, but today these indexes are 80 and 77 respectively. This has happened due to the influence of many factors, among which are possibilities to get twenty-four-hour hospital-and home-based medical care, buy high-quality goods, medicines, and to use more safe devises in the working processes. Without the consumerism all this would be impossible as economically unprofitable.

Secondly, consumerism is an effective way of motivation. The temptation to buy a new device, better clothes and tastier food encourages people to earn more money. But for this they should work harder, develop their professional skills and widen their outlook. Moreover, a new purchase itself can become a reason for a person to get some new experience.

Thirdly, the economies of almost all developed countries are based on production of new goods and services. You may not realize it, but the more people buy, the more income the state gets, and the more money can be donated to the social spheres, such as health care, education and culture. So the countries possessing more financial resources provide their citizens with better life conditions.

On the other hand, there is an opinion that consumerism is a kind of a harmful circle, which will not make people’s lives better, but will only contribute to an endless competition between all of them. Juliet Bschor, for example, thinks that the rising number of different goods and services available nowadays makes people neither happier nor wealthier. It only makes them work harder in order to earn money for just another nice thing, spending less time with their families and friends, and trying to compensate it with buying new goods. The satisfaction usually does not last long, only till the moment one sees someone else possessing a better or more fashionable thing. But in fact, the issue of social happiness does not depend on services of products that can be bought. It is just a matter of a person’s character.

So consumerism can influence society both positively and negatively depending on many factors. But, in general, it has more advantages, because it serves as a basis for development on individual, social and state levels.

【1】According to the passage, the temptation to buy things can ________.

    A.force people to work harder

B.lead people to earn more money

    C.provide people with more holidays

D.forbid people to be more professional

【2】What’s the author’s attitude towards consumerism?

    A.To present one opinion.

  • 24、   Pre-school children who spend time together take on one another's personalities, a new research has found. The study shows that environment plays a key role in shaping people's personalities. While genetics still forms the central part of the human psyche (心理), the research finds that personality traits (特征) are "contagious" (传染的) among children. "Our finding flies in the face of common assumptions that personality can't be changed," said Dr. Jennifer Neal, co-author of the study.

The researchers studied the personalities and social networks of two pre-school classes for a full school year. One of the classes was a set of three-year-olds, and the other a set of four-year-olds. Children whose friends were hard-working or outgoing gradually took on these personality traits over time. Psychology expert Dr. Emily Dublin said kids are having a far bigger effect on each other than people may realize.

The new study is not the first to explore the contagious effects of personality traits. A 2015 psychology study found that rudeness at work can be contagious as it travels from person to person "like a disease". The study found that seeing a boss being rude to an employee was enough to cause people to be rude to those around them.

The researchers questioned 6,000 people on the social "climate" in their workplaces, which included offices, hotels and restaurants. They found 75 percent of those who took part said they had been treated rudely at least once in the past year. And the study also suggests that merely seeing other people being subjected to rudeness made it more likely that a person would treat their colleagues in the same way. Rudeness could include leaving someone off an invite to a company event, sending unkind emails, finding fault with others or failing to give praise.

Dr. Torkelson believes companies need to be more aware of the harm that rudeness in the workplace can do as it can damage the working environment. She said better training could help to fight against the problem.
