二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The philosopher, Martin Buber, is most known for his work on “I-Thou/You” relationships in which people are open, direct, mutually interested in each other. In contrast, “I-It” relationships are those in which we use the other, like an object, to solve our problems and fulfill our needs and purposes.

It is not our fault that many of our relationships are or become “It” relationships because most of what we feel, think and do is motivated by unconscious memories of how to survive the environment into which we were born. Thus, one of the reasons we use other people to help us feel better about ourselves and cope in the world is that using people was once necessary and it worked. When we were small and helpless, “It” came and fed us, and held us, and set us on our way. We didn’t have to reciprocate and care for “It”. Even when the care and attention of “It” was minimal or unpredictable, if we got out of childhood alive, somewhere along the way “It” was involved.

Freud called this stage of early life “primary narcissism”, which is our instinct (本能) for self-preservation and is a normal part of our development. While most of us grow out of it,we still hold a survival fear, which motivates us to escape danger and to stay alive, and we all need this fear in healthy measure.

The problem is that too many of us, too much of the time, are in a constant state of threat—and we often don’t know it. We imagine people are talking about us behind our backs, that we have cancer, that we are inadequate, and vulnerable to more than our share of bad luck. As our brains have grown in size and complexity, so has our ability to scare ourselves.

This causes many problems. For example, our stress levels increase, our digestion is impaired and our thinking becomes restricted. Our threat response stops any bodily function, feeling, thought and behavior that might “waste” energy and detract from fighting or escaping danger. Thus, when in threat, our emotional, cognitive and behavioral range is significantly reduced.

And in this reduced state, one of our solutions is to find someone who can save and comfort us. Instead of enabling us to be open, direct and mutual, fear and anxiety lead us towards conversations and choices in our relations with others that are orientated towards surviving—not thriving (茁壮成长). Threat-motivated relationships are characterized by need, dependency, control, demand, dishonesty, and self-interest.

We cannot form the “I-Thou” relationships that Buber speaks of until we have learned to notice, comfort, and understand the emotions and patterns of our threat brain. When in threat, we tend to use other people as objects who can save and protect us, or who we can blame for our problems.

  • 22、   Researchers have watched Asian honey bees hunt for animal feces(粪便), carry it home, and then apply it around the entrance to their nests. Their findings document the behavior for the first time.

"It turns out that by applying animal feces around colony entrances, Asian honey bees are able to stop giant hornets(大黄蜂)from their nest entrances. The hornets are less likely to try to break into the colonies by landing and chewing at their entrances in a multiple-hornet attack, which is the most deadly kind of hornet attack that honey bees experience," lead researcher Heather Mattila said.

Called "fecal spotting", what the bees are doing is using a tool, researchers suggest. "Tool use is a controversial topic and the criteria to identify it have been defined and redefined many times over," Mattila says. "Across the majority of definitions, we look for an animal holding something, placing it with intentionality, and using it in a way that improves the function of the thing that the tool was applied to. This behavior of honey bees meets all of these criteria.”

Mattila and her fellows have been studying Asian honey bees in Vietnam since 2013. They’ve done fieldwork watching colonies in wooden hives(蜂房)managed by local beekeepers. They cleaned the front of the hives and then tracked how the bees looked for animal feces to build up defenses against their hornet enemies.

They found that giant hornets were much less likely to land on hive entrances or chew their way into the hives when there were more fecal spots around the entrances.

Attacks by groups of giant hornets can sometimes wipe out entire colonies of honey bees so protective measures like these are key to survival. Interestingly, the animal feces keeps away the hornets, but the bees don't have a problem picking it up or toting it around.

"At this point, we don't know why animal feces disgusts hornets but is attractive to bees," Matilla says. "It is definitely something that needs to be studied further.”

【1】Why do Asian honey bees take animal feces home?

    A.To build their nests.

    B.To defend their nests.

    C.To shelter nest entrances.

D.To set a trap for enemies.

【2】What is the purpose of paragraph 3?

A.To show tool use is a controversial topic.

B.To show the concept of tool use is hard to define

C.To show there are many definitions about tool use.

D.To show "fecal spotting" is a tool using phenomenon.

【3】What puzzles researchers in the study?

A.How honey bees find animal feces.

B.Why giant hornets attack honey bees.

C.What is the key to honey bees’ survival.

D.Why giant hornets hate feces while bees don't.

【4】What can be the best title for the passage?

A.Honey Bees Are Cleverer than Giant Hornets

B.Tool Using Skills Make Honey Bees Stand Out

C.Honey Bees Employ Tools to Fight Giant Hornets

D.Honey Bees Use Various Ways to Defend Hornets

  • 23、A housing block in Wales has been fitted with a world-first solar system that connects all the flats to the same rooftop panels. The residents of Odet Court in Cardiff are set to save 50 percent off their energy bills thanks to the new technology, which can meet up to 75 percent of each flat’s electricity demand.

Australian manufacturer Allume Energy claims that its SolShare model is the only technology that enables solar energy from a single rooftop system to be shared by multiple homes in the same building.

The Welsh government funded the pioneering project with social housing landlord Wales & West Housing, as part of a nationwide retrofitting (改装) programme. And housing blocks across Europe could soon benefit from the eco-innovation. Allume Energy points out that 300 million Europeans live in low-and medium-rise apartment buildings with roof space for solar panels.

People’s appetite for solar panels is increasing greatly. Around 1.2 million UK homes have them installed, according to the latest MCS standards agency figures. But more is needed to speed up the solar roll-out, and make the green energy source accessible for everyone. Allume Energy General Manager for Europe Jack Taylor says he hopes the Welsh project will serve as a template for governments and social housing providers in the UK to upgrade multi-unit residences.

As well as saving money on hardware, the company says that SolShare has boosted solar use by more than 25 percent. The new system is suitable for retrofit projects as well as new buildings, as it does not require any changes to existing supply and metering infrastructure.

Based on the average use of 18, 000 kW·h to 2, 400 kW·h for a one-bed flat, Allume Energy estimates that this translates to an electricity bill saving of around 50 percent. Given current average electricity costs in the UK of 34 P/kW·h, that means each flat are likely to save between £390 to £530 a year, which is a significant amount off in a cost of living crisis.

【1】What is special about the rooftop solar system in Wales?

A.It is the world’s first solar system.

B.It is shared by all the flats in a building.

C.It is fitted on the roofs of separate flats.

D.It cuts the users’ electricity costs by 75%.

【2】Who could benefit first from the project funded by the Welsh government?

A.People living in flats with roof space for solar panels.

B.Rural residents eager for green energy.

    C.Villagers often experiencing power failure.

D.Rich people with their own separate houses.

【3】What does the underlined word “template” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Change.

    B.Goal.

    C.Model.

    D.Warning.

【4】In what aspect does the solar system benefit its users?

    A.Less power failure.

    B.Lower electricity bills.

    C.Reduced-price electricity.

    D.Less demand for electricity.

  • 24、   Pycnandra acuminate (喜树) is a rare tree native to New Caledonia that has the rare ability to collect heavy metals like nickel () from the ground. The liquid circulated in its body is blue-green and reportedly contains up to 25% nickel.

In general, trees and heavy metals like nickel don’t really go well together. But Pycnandra acuminata make them live together. And that’s what makes Pycnandra acuminata so special. It sucks out normally poisonous levels of heavy metals from the soil and store them in its trunk, leaves and seeds.

The evolution of Pycnandra acuminate is believed to have occurred over millions of years, but scientists have yet to identify a universal principle of nickel intake and storage. The reason why such trees have formed the way of absorbing metals is also up for debate.

The most popular theory states that the concentration of nickel protects such trees from leaf-chewing insects. And studies have shown that nickel accumulated by these trees indeed harms many insects though some have developed a high tolerance to it. Another theory says nickel has effects of resisting bacteria, which protects the trees from various diseases. However, these theories are all just theories.

One thing that has been proven is the ability of Pycnandra acurninata to clean the soil with poisonous materials caused by human activity. There’s also clear potential for collecting heavy materials like nickel in these kinds of soils that will bring a few profits by conventional ways of mining. People can collect minerals contained in such soils from the blue-green trees

Unfortunately, Pycnandra acuminata is is recently in a bad situation. Human activity in forests of New Caledonia has made Pycnandra acuminata in danger. Consequently, probably fewer than several hundred trees of this kind have remained as a result of the reduction of our forests.

1What do we know about Pycnandra acuminata?

A.It has a blue-green color due to metals collected.

B.It is able to collect some heavy metals from the ground.

C.It sucks out a great deal of poisonous underground water.

D.It tends to grow in the soil with plenty of poisonous liquid.

2What do the theories in paragraph 4 say about Pycnandra acuminata?

    A.It indeed protects many insects.

B.It stores most nickel in its roots.

C.It protects itself through the concentration of nickel.

D.It makes its surrounding plants suffer from diseases.

3What does the author mainly want to express in the last paragraph?

    A.Pycnandra acuminata is in danger.

B.Forests are to blame for the reduction of trees.

C.Forests are decreasing as a result of human activity.

D.Pycnandra acuminata is under the protection of people.

4In which section of a magazine is this next most likely to appear?

A.Bacteria and disease. B.Health and life.

C.Fashion and entertainment. D.Man and nature.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Eight-year-old Amanda heard Mom and Dad talking about her little brother, Hyman, who was very sick and learnt that only a very costly surgery could save him. Being in heavy debt, Dad said to Mom in desperation, “Only a miracle can save him now.”

Amanda went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jar in the closet. She poured all the change out and counted it carefully. Three times. No chance here for mistakes. Carefully placing the coins back in the jar, she slipped out the back door and made her way six blocks to the pharmacy (药店).

On arriving the pharmacy, she poured her jar on the counter. The pharmacist got annoyed as she was talking to her brother, Dr. Bethune, a neurosurgery (神经外科) surgeon, who happened to be on a visit. Asked what she wanted, Amanda answered back, “My brother’s really, really sick... and I want to buy a miracle.” She explained her brother had something bad growing inside his head and needed an operation, and her Dad said only a miracle could save him. The pharmacist shook her head and said softly, “We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry but I can’t help you.”

Hearing this, Amanda couldn’t help wailing, tears rolling down like a broken string of beads. Witnessing this, Dr. Bethune leaned down and asked her, “How much do you have?” “One dollar and eleven cents.” Amanda responded proudly. “Well, what a coincidence,” smiled Dr. Bethune, “A dollar and eleven cents-the exact price of a miracle for your little brother.” Overjoyed, Amanda twirled and jumped.
