二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Approximately 40 percent adults and 19 percent children in the US are obese (肥胖的). Obese people are at increased risk of many serious diseases, including high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. 【1】 If you are suffering from these, here’s a way of losing weight that you can try.

Dietary “self-monitoring” is a common strategy that people use to lose weight. 【2】The theory is that when thinking of what you put in your body, you’ll make healthier decisions. Can it really be that easy? There’s no doubt that dietary self-monitoring has been shown to help lose weight. 【3】

Recently, researchers studied obese individuates in otherwise good health who participated in a 24- week weight control program where they recorded their daily dietary intake using an online program. The findings demonstrated that people who continued to record their food intake daily for 24 weeks lost more weight compared to those who quit noting their intake. 【4】 In comparison, those who recorded less than 2 times daily lost less weight.

Researchers found the more often people logged what they ate, the more weight they might lose. They noted people might have greater success with weight loss if they recorded their dietary intake about three times a day, rather than recording all of their meals in one sitting.

【5】 Dietary self-monitoring can be performed in different ways — using an online program, using a pencil or using smartphone applications, so it is important to find what works for you.

A.Luckily, obesity can be treated by recording your meals.

B.It involves recording what they consume, and how much.

C.A good principle to follow may be “write when you bite”.

D.Obesity is also associated with a lower life quality and poor mental health.

E.Using an electronic system, researchers were able to see what people were doing.

F.However, not much is known about how long this takes or how often it should be done.

G.People who lost at least 10 percent of their weight recorded their food intake about 3 times a day.

  • 22、The Enduring Appeal of Peter Rabbit

“I don’t know what to write to you, so I shall tell you a story about four little rabbits, whose names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail and Peter,” wrote Beatrix Potter, an English writer, illustrator, natural scientist, and conservationist in 1893, in a letter to a little boy who was suffering from a serious infectious disease.

Like many children-story authors, Potter was not a writer by profession. Her chief enthusiasm was natural history. Childhood family holidays in Perthshire and the Lake District had given her the freedom to experience the natural world first-hand. 【1】 Owing to Potter’s illustrations, the humanized rabbits seemed to exist in a recognizably real place. As Potter once admitted, the “careful botanical studies of my youth” informed the reality of her fantasy drawings. 【2】 In these images, Peter in the vegetable garden ate radishes (萝卜) or jumped off the wall.

The Tale of Peter Rabbit was first published by Frederick Warne in 1902. 【3】 However, Warne disagreed. Only after Potter had the book privately published did Warne change his mind. It was an immediate success, much to Potter’s surprise. “The public must be fond of rabbits! What a shocking quantity of Peter,” she said. The original tales, under the Warne imprint, are still available today.

【4】 In 1903, she registered a Peter Rabbit doll, making him the first fictional character to be made into a patented stuffed toy. After that, there were licensed wallpapers, board games and painting books. She earned large amounts of money. After her death, almost all her property was left to the National Trust.

A.Potter surely had a business mind.

B.A decade later, with slight adjustments, the lines formed the opening to what became the bestselling.

C.It was this experience that gave Peter Rabbit its unique atmosphere of believable wonder.

D.Potter was determined that the book should be small enough to fit into a child’s hands and inexpensive.

E.She spent holidays in the Lake District, developing a love of landscape, which she closely observed and painted.

F.Though her later stories would contain more strikingly detailed illustrations, The Tale of Peter Rabbit has charming pictures of its naughty hero.

  • 23、My 21-year-old niece, a second-year undergraduate, mentioned that she watches video lectures offline at twice the normal speed. Struck by this, I asked some other students I know. Many now routinely speed up their lectures when learning offline — often by 1.5 times, sometimes by even more. Speed learning is not for everyone, but there are websites where students discuss how odd it will be once they return to the lecture theatre. One contributor wrote: “Normal speed now sounds like drunk speed.”

Education was adapting to the digital world long before Covid-19 but, as with so many other human activities, the pandemic has given learning a huge push towards the virtual. Overnight, schools and universities closed and teachers and students had to find ways to do what they do only via the internet. “This is a time for schools and systems to reimagine education without schooling or classrooms,” says Professor Yong Zhao. Dr Jim Watterston in Australia thinks that, while the traditional classroom is still alive and well, education needs to be more adventurous and flexible. Earlier this year, Zhao and Watterston co-authored a paper in which they identified some major changes that should happen in education post-lockdown.

The first concerns the content, which should emphasize such things as creativity, critical thinking and leadership, rather than the collection and storage of information. “For humans to progress in the age of smart machines, it is essential that they do not compete with machines.”, they wrote, “Instead, they need to be more human.”

The second is that students should have more control over their learning, with the teacher’s role shifting from instructor to supervisor of learning resources, advisor and motivator. This is where so-called “active learning” comes in with a growing body of research suggesting that comprehension and memory are better when students learn in a hands-on way — through discussion and interactive technologies, for example. It’s also where the concept of “productive failure” applies. Professor Manu Kapurin argues that students learn better from their own or others’ failed attempts to solve a problem before or even instead of being told how to solve it.

If the progress of the times is unable to hold back the coming revolution in education, it seems unlikely that the traditional classroom is going to have any luck in its attempts trying to turn back the clock. As Laurillard puts it, “It took a global pandemic to drive home what we’ve been saying for 20 years.”

【1】By giving examples of “speed learning” in the first paragraph, the author wants to show that _________.

A.digital world is dramatically reforming the way of learning.

B.speed learning completely replaces normal speed learning.

C.returning to the lecture theatre is strange after speed learning.

D.education begins to adapt to digital world after Covid-19.

【2】According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.It is essential for smart machines to be more human.

B.Students should possess more information about creativity.

C.Students value others’ failure over their own failure.

D.“Active learning” calls for diverse ways of involvement.

【3】According to Zhao and Watterston, the major changes in education should include _________.

①learning mode       ②learning motive             ③learning attitude               ④learning focus

    A.①④

    B.②③

    C.①③

    D.②④

【4】According to the passage, what does the author most probably agree with?

A.Speed learning harms students’ learning efficiency.

B.The coming revolution in education is irreversible.

C.Teachers will play a less important role in the future.

D.The traditional classrooms will eventually disappear.

  • 24、American Jake Pinnick comes from a small town called Kewanee.

Pinnick said when he told friends and family he wanted to go to the Wudang Kungfu Academy in China, the response was typical. "It's not a usual thing to say, but it is pretty normal for kids to want to get out of a place like Kewanee. Most kids say something like they want to move to Hollywood and become an actor, " said the 30-year-old. “When I first thought about it, it was daydreaming for myself, too.”

Once he found himself at the academy, Pinnick said fitting in was softened by other foreigners who were in the area and a part of the school. Getting used to the way of life was surprisingly easy given the peaceful nature to it. Pinnick said after a while, he found himself more at home in Wudang than he ever felt back home in Kewanee. Locals were more than welcoming and willing to engage.

“The culture shock wasn't that bad. Surprisingly, I find I have more of that going back to America now... learning the language did take some time, but everyone around the school was familiar with foreigners, so we had a lot of fun speaking broken English and Chinese back and forth at the start.”

After he settled into a routine, Pinnick set about engaging himself in Chinese culture, including Kungfu training. He was also attracted by the philosophical tradition most well-known for the idea of living in harmony with the universe.

Pinnick said he had to go home after the first six months and immediately wanted to return to China, feeling as if it had now become his home more than America, and he had begun a process of rewriting himself as a person overseas.

His life now goes around training, teaching and studying. He graduated from the academy in 2014 and still helps teach there.

Pinnick said the goal is to one day return to America and teach what he has learned. Looking back on his amazing journey, Pinnick said he has grown by leaps and bounds from a small-town American kid who had a daydream he could not shake.

【1】What did Pinnick's family think of his idea of learning Kungfu?

    A.Unrealistic.

    B.Creative.

    C.Challenging.

    D.Disappointing.

【2】What mainly helped Pinnick get used to the life in China?

    A.His fluent Chinese.

    B.The friendly local culture.

    C.His peaceful nature.

    D.Other foreign teachers there.

【3】What did Pinnick gain from his experience in China?

    A.A career choice.

    B.A large fortune.

    C.A Kungfu certificate.

    D.A good reputation.
