Mars( 火星) appears to be flowing with small streams of salty water, at least in the summer, scientists reported Monday."It suggests that.it would be possible for there to be life today on Mars," NASA's science mission chief, John Grunsfeld, said at a news conference on September 28, 2015.

The streams are about 12 to 15 feet wide and 300 feet or more long, scientists said."What we're dealing with is wet soil.thin layers of wet soil, not standing water," said Aifred  McEwen of the University of Arizona at Tueson ! the principal scientist for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's high-resolution imaging experiment.

Because liquid water is essential to life, the findings could have major implications for the possibility of Martian life. The researchers said further exploration is needed to determine whether microscopic life exists on the planet.

The presence of liquid water could also make life easier for astronauts visiting or

living on Mars.Water could be used for drinking and for creating oxygen and rocket

fuel.NASA's goal is to send humans there in the 2030s.

The evidence of flowing water consists largely of dark, narrow streaks(条痕) on

the surface that tend to appear and grow during the warmest Martian months and fade

    the rest of the year.

Mars is extremely cold even in summer, and the streaks are in places where the

temperature is as low as minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit. But salt can lower the freezing point of water and melt ice.

The source of the water is a mystery.Scientists noted it could be melting

ice.It could be an underground aquifer, which is rock or sand that can hold water. It is possibly water vapor from the thin Martian atmosphere, Or it may be a combination Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA's Mars exploration program, said the only definitive way for now to determine whether there's life on Mars is to collect rocks and soil for analysis on Earth - something a U.S.lander set for lift-off in 2020 will do.

A.Streams of Water Spotted on Mars

2According to John Grunsfeld, there seems to be   on Mars.

    A.salty water

    B.standing water

    C.rocket fuel

    D.human beings

3Scientists are uncertain about the of the water on Mars.

    A.state

    B.source

    C.temperature

    D.taste

4What matters to the existence of liquid water on Mars?

    A.The distance from the sun.

    C.The gravity of the earth

    D.The salt in it.

  • 22、This year marks exactly two centuries since the publication of “Frankenstein; or, The Modem Prometheus,” by Mary Shelley. Even before the invention of the electric light bulb, the author produced a remarkable work of speculative fiction that would foreshadow (预示) many ethical questions to be raised by technologies yet to come.

Today the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (Al) raises fundamental questions: “What is intelligence, identity, or consciousness? What makes humans humans?” What is being called artificial general intelligence, machines that would imitate the way humans think, continue to puzzle scientists. Yet humans remain fascinated by the idea of robots that would look, move and respond like humans, similar to those depicted on sci-fi TV series such as “Humans”. Just how people think is still far too complex to be understood, let alone reproduced, says David Eagleman, a Stanford University neuroscientist. “We are just in a situation where there are no good theories explaining what consciousness actually is and how you could ever build a machine to get there.”

But that doesn’t mean crucial ethical issues involving AI aren’t at hand. The coming use of autonomous vehicles, for example, poses thorny (棘手的) ethical questions. Human drivers sometimes must make split-second decisions. Their reactions may be a complex combination of instant reflexes, input from past driving experiences, and what their eyes and ears tell them in that moment. AI “vision” today is not nearly as sophisticated as that of humans. And to anticipate every imaginable driving situation is a difficult programming problem.

Whenever decisions are based on masses of data, “you quickly get into a lot of ethical questions,” notes Tan Kiat How, chief executive of a Singapore-based agency that is helping the government develop a voluntary code for the ethical use of Al. Along with Singapore, other governments and mega-corporations are beginning to establish their own guidelines. Britain is setting up a data ethics center India released its Al ethics strategy this spring.

On June 7 Google promised not to design or employ Al that would cause “overall harm,” or to develop Al-directed weapons or use AI for surveillance (监视) that would break international norms (规则). It also promised not to employ AI whose use would violate international laws or human rights.

While the statement is vague, it represents one starting point. So does the idea that decisions made by Al systems should be explainable, transparent, and fair.

To put it another way: How can we make sure that the thinking of intelligent machines reflects humanity’s highest values? Only then will they be useful servants and not Frankenstein’s out-of-control monster.

【1】Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein is mentioned because it________.

A.fascinates AI scientists all over the world

B.has remained popular for as long as 200 years

C.involves some concerns raised by Al today

    D.has sparked serious ethical controversies

    A.helps explain artificial intelligence

B.can be misleading to robot making

    C.inspires popular sci-fi TV series

D.is too limited for us to reproduce it

【3】The solution to the ethical issues brought by autonomous vehicles________.

    A.can hardly ever be found

    B.is still beyond our capacity

    C.causes little public concern

    D.has aroused much curiosity

【4】Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

A.AI’s Future: In the Hands of Tech Giants

B.Frankenstein, the Novel Predicting the Age of AI

C.The Conscience of AI: Complex but Inevitable

D.AI Shall Be Killers Once Out of Control

  • 23、   Clara Daly was seated on an Alaska Airlines flight from Boston to Los Angeles when a flight attendant asked an urgent question over the loudspeaker: “Does anyone on board know American Sign Language?”

Clara, 15 at the time, pressed the call button. The flight attendant came by and explained the situation. “We have a passenger on the plane who’s blind and deaf,” she said. The passenger seemed to want something, but he was traveling alone and the flight attendants couldn’t understand what he needed.

Clara had been studying ASL for the past year and knew she'd be able to finger spell into the man's hand. So she left her seat, walked toward the front of the plane, and knelt by the seat of Tim Cook, then 64. Gently taking his hand, she signed, “How are you? Are you OK?” Cook asked for some water. When it arrived, Clara returned to her seat. She came by again a bit later because he wanted to know the time. On her third visit, she stopped and stayed awhile.

“He didn’t need anything. He was lonely and wanted to talk,” Clara says.

So for the next hour, that's what they did. She talked about her family and her plans for the future. Cook told Clara how he had gradually become blind and shared stories of his days as a travelling salesman. Even though he couldn’t see her, she “looked attentively at his face with such kindness,” a passenger reported.

“Clara was amazing,” a flight attendant told Alaska Airlines in a blog interview. “You could tell Tim was very excited to have someone he could speak to, and she was such an angel. ”

B.Because she could help reduce his loneliness.

C.Because she wanted to share her plans for the future.

D.Because she wanted to learn the man's travelling stories.

【3】What is the flight attendant’s attitude towards Clara?

    A.Positive.

    B.Negative.

  • 24、To help astronauts of the future survive the mental challenges that come with living in space for extended periods of time, space travelers’ missions could soon be accompanied by AI-powered, empathetic (同理心的) robotic assistants.

Not only does space travel present astronauts with a lot of physical stresses, spending months or years in such a physically demanding place with limited space and the same people can also raise lots of mental tests as well. According to MIT Technology Review, scientists are wording to ease some of the mental challenges facing astronauts by creating “an AI assistant that’s able to feel human emotion and respond with empathy.”

While such a technology would prove itself useful by being able to predict the needs of crew members and “intervene (介入) if their mental health is in need of help, ”it has the potential to he life saving when humans choose to explore beyond the earth’s gravitational field and towards deep space.

Though astronauts currently on the International Space Station have an intelligent robot to interact with, it lacks proper emotional intelligence. As a result, a team at the organization’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is working on a more advanced and complicated emotional support companion that can control a spacecraft’s functioning in addition to tracking crew member’s behaviors.

Right now in the lab, an AI-equipped robot called Henry the Helper can be found wandering around the grounds helping visitors who appear confused or lost based on their facial expressions. Two more emotionally intelligent robots are expected to be introduced later this year, one of which is said to be able to participate in conversations more complex than giving navigation(导航) assistance.

The team’s final goal is to make a companion named Fiona the Future a reality, an emotionally intelligent cross-platform system. Rather than being limited to a physical robotic device, it could be digitally integrated into space stations and habitats on Mars and beyond. Fiona, if all goes according to the JPL’s plans, will help keep astronauts of the future mentally fit as they start their journeys to deep space.

【1】Why are the emotional support robots needed?

A.To help astronauts get rid of physical stresses.

B.To protect astronauts from emotional suffering.

C.To achieve the mission of exploring deep space.

D.To test the robots’ ability to feel human emotions.

【2】What is true about the current intelligent robot on the International Space Station?

    A.It can save astronauts’ lives.

    B.It can interact with astronauts.

    C.It has emotional intelligence.

    D.It can predict astronauts’ needs.

【3】What do we know about Fiona the Future?

A.It is due to be introduced this year.

B.It is available in the space stations.

C.It is just a physical robotic device.

D.It is more of an intelligent system.

【4】Where does this passage probably come from?

    A.A medicine magazine.

    B.A business magazine.

    C.A science magazine.

    D.A travel magazine.
