The first book in the Epic Fails series deals with one of the most ambitious goals humans have pursued: the quests to fly. • 27、   The coronavirus outbreak has sparked panic buying of toilet paper and cleaning products in countries across the world, but one UK businessman is determined to spread some happiness among the anxiety and confusion.

Rob Braddick, 48, who owns Braddick’s Holiday Park in Westward Ho, Devon, in the southwest of England, has filled the toy grabber machines in his amusement park with two of the country’s most sought-after cleaning products.

Customers could previously try their hand at grabbing “Frozen 2” or “Peter Rabbit” toys from the machines, but no more. “They got removed this morning,” Braddick said of the toys, replacing them with toilet roll and hand sanitizer (洗手液). Visitors can now pay 50p for three goes on the toilet roll grabber, or a go for Carex, which Braddick described as the “Rolls- Royce of hand sanitizers.”

Braddick said that his decision was born of a desire to make people feel less stressed in uncertain times. “It’s a bit of light relief with everything that’s going on,” he said. “Hopefully it will raise a smile, which I think everybody needs.”

Around the world, travel plans have been severely affected, and tens of millions of people remain at home as part of global efforts to fight against coronavirus. Supermarkets have seen shortages of toilet paper and hand sanitizer as anxious consumers stockpile the products.

Braddick said the family business, which has been running since 1932, has received more than a dozen calls from potential customers who say they don’t want to travel abroad for their holidays and would rather stay in the UK. As for his own measures against coronavirus, Braddick said staff have been told to wash their hands every half hour, which is particularly important for those handling money.

1What is the third paragraph mainly about?

A.New practice of the game. B.Prizes of the game.

C.Price for a try. D.People’s love for grabbing toys.

2What’s the purpose of Braddick’s new idea?

A.To make higher profits. B.To attract more people to play the game.

C.To support his family business. D.To ease people’s anxiety.

3What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Cleaning products will be in shortage for a long time.

B.Braddick’s business is experiencing a hard time.

C.Tourism may fall into a decline.

D.Everyone in the park is told to wash their hands every half hour.

  • 28、   When I was watching some children attempting to catch butterflies on a hot July afternoon, an incident in my own childhood occurred to me. When I was 15, something happened to me, which forever cured me of desiring to put any wild life in a cage.

We lived on the edge of a wood, and every evening at dusk the mockingbirds would come and rest in the tree and sing. There isn't a musical instrument made by man that can produce a more beautiful sound than the song of the mockingbird.

I decided that I would catch a young bird and keep it in a cage and that way have my own private musician.

I finally succeeded in catching one and put it in a cage. At first, in its fright at being captured, the bird fluttered about the cage, but eventually it settled down in its new home, I felt very pleased with myself and looked forward to some beautiful singing from my tiny musician.

I had left the cage out on our back porch(门廊), and on the second day of the bird's captivity my new pet's mother flew to the cage with food in her mouth . The baby bird ate everything she brought to it. I was pleased to see this. Certainly the mother knew better than I how to feed her baby.

The following morning when I went to see how my captive was doing, I discovered it on the floor of the cage, dead. I was shocked! What had happened? I had taken excellent care of my little bird, or so I thought.

Arthur Wayne, the famous ornithologist, happened to be visiting my father at the time and, hearing me crying over the death of my bird, explained what had occurred: “A mother mockingbird, finding her young in a cage, will sometimes bring it poisonous berries. She thinks it better for her young to die than to live in captivity.”

Never since then have I caught any living creature and put it in a cage. All living creatures have a right to live free.

1Why did the writer catch a mockingbird when he was a boy?

    A. He had just got a new cage.

    B. He liked its beautiful feather.

    C. He wanted it to sing for him.

    D. He wanted a pet for a companion.

2Why did the mocking bird die?

    A. It was frightened to death.

    B. It drank the poisonous water by mistake.

    C. It ate the poisonous food its mother gave it.

    D. It refused to eat anything.

3What is an ornithologist likely to be?

    A. A specialist in birds. B. A religious person.

    C. A headmaster. D. A considerate person.

4What is the most important lesson the author learned from the incident?

    A. Be careful about the food you give to baby birds.

    B. All birds put in a cage won't live long.

    C. You should keep the birds from their mothers.

    D. Freedom is very valuable to all creatures.

  • 29、   Almost every community has some form of rules and some way of enforcing them. So why do we have rules, and what makes people follow them?

Studies have suggested that the reason we don’t like rule-breaking is because fairness is programmed into our brains. Scientists have found that the brain reacts in a particular way when we feel we are being treated unfairly. A fair situation makes us feel comfortable and even happy, but unfairness causes our brains to respond with negative feelings. The study found that this so happened when subjects saw others being treated unfairly. They concluded that fairness is one of basic human needs.

Arriving at a feeling of fairness means considering different, often conflicting, points of view. Regardless of the disagreement, people almost always need to compromise. But it can be difficult to arrive at a compromise when there are conflicting interests. This is why communities have rules that everyone must follow.

Social controls are an important factor in setting and following rules. They influence the way we behave, and can be internal (内在的) or external. Internal controls come from within and are based on our values and fears. Most of us don’t steal, for example, because we believe that theft is unfair and wrong. We don’t want to disappoint our family and friends, either. In other words, our internal controls keep us from behaving in ways that cause conflict.

External controls include rewards and punishments. Rewards, such as job promotions and praise, are designed to encourage people to behave and act in the interest of the whole community.

Punishments, such as public embarrassment, fines, and even imprisonment can prevent people from acting against the community’s best interests.

People need their communities to function smoothly. If there were no rules, most people would probably still behave positively. However, there would always be a minority who would not. This is why a society without rules is unlikely to exist.

1What does the underlined word ‘‘this’’ in paragraph 2 refer to?

A.A program in human brains. B.A comfortable situation.

C.The response with bad feelings. D.The requirement off fairness.

    2Why do communities have rules?

A.To punish illegal activities. B.To prevent disagreement.

C.To promote fairness. D.To meet various demands.

3Which of the following is an example of internal control?

A.Take exams honestly because cheating is shameful

B.Park in the right place so as not to get a parking ticket.

C.Pay the electricity bill on time in order not to get a late fee.

D.Cooperate with your classmates to win a prize for your class.

4What is the best title for this passage?

A.Living by the rules B.Following rules with punishments

    C.Reaching a compromise D.Calling for fairness

But I didn’t think AlphaGo would play the game in such a perfect manner.”DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis expressed“huge 3 for Lee Se-dol and his amazing skills.”calling the game“hugely exciting”and“very tense.”Team lead David Silver said it was an“amazing game of Go that really pushed AlphaGo to its 4.”

Go is an ancient Chinese board game that has long been considered one of the great 5faced by AI. While computer programs ow best the world’s leading human players of games like checkers and chess, the high level of intuition and 6required by Go has made it tough for computers to crack. DeepMind’s AlphaGo program is the most 7effort yet, using a complex system of deep neural networks and machine learning; it beat European champion Fan Hui last year, but Lee Se-dol is another 8 rival entirely.

“I don’t regret accepting this challenge,”said Lee.“I am in shock, I admit that, but what’s done is done. I enjoyed this game and look forward to the next. I think I failed on the opening layout so if I do a better job on the opening aspect I think I will be able to increase my 9 of winning.”Lee was surprised both by how strong AlphaGo’s opening was, and by some 10moves.

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.

AI artwork sells for $432,500 — nearly 45 times its high1 — as Christie’s becomes the first auction house to offer a work of art created by an algorithm. This portrait, however, is not the product of a human mind. It was created by an2 intelligence, an algorithm defined by that algebraic formula with its many parentheses. And when it went under the3 in the Prints & Multiples sale at Christie’s on 23-25 October, Portrait of Edmond Belamy sold for an4 $432,500, signaling the arrival of AI art on the world auction stage.

From a distance, Portrait of Edmond de Belamy looks almost plausible. Up close, however, the paintwork becomes a grid of mechanical-looking dots, the man’s face a golden blur with black holes for eyes. Look into those eyes. They show no sign of feeling or life. Did a computer make this?

The answer is yes. The first artwork5 by AI to be sold at Christie’s, its6 price would seem to suggest that in future we will get computers to make art for us. Robot van Gogh will harmlessly cut its ear off and robot Picasso will be a genius.

Is this the future AI art visionaries such as the French collective Obvious, which programmed this “painter” by getting it to compare its own work with 15,000 pre-20th century portraits, have in mind? Or are they just, God forbid, making a fast buck from deceivable art collectors? Because believing the algorithm that knocked this up to be in any meaningful way an “artist” is like thinking your voice-interaction programme is out to get you. Dream on. Computers would need to replicate human consciousness before they could replicate the funny thing humans do called “art”.

Art is a way in which human 7 expresses itself, and is equally true of the earliest cave art, Rembrandt’s portraits and Duchamp’s urinal. And that is what is missing from Portrait of Edmond Bellamy. Art is a way humans communicate ideas, perceptions and feelings to each other. It has no 8 outside the human passion to communicate. So in what meaningful sense can an AI replica of certain9 traits of old master paintings be called art?

For a robot to really make art, it would need an autonomous mind that was emotional as well as10. No AI developer has yet claimed to be anywhere near achieving that and if they ever do, their creation will probably have better things to do than paint portraits — like destroy humanity.

Maybe afterwards robots will invent their own kind of art, but it won’t be some poor pastiche of human genius.

It will be beyond anything we organics could imagine.

  • 41、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

“Good news,” Mom said, with a bright smile on her face. "The Parker family wants Surfer. They'll be here in an hour to take him home. ” Surfer had been with us for two days. While I was sad at the thought of seeing him go, I knew I couldn't keep him.

My family operate a foster home(收养所)for pets. Surfer had been in an animal shelter, and he was sent to us so we could place him with a loving family. Surfer was a cute puppy, so finding a home for him had been very easy. Dad entered Surfer's information into a pet adoption website, along with some photos, and within a few hours, the Parkers applied to adopt him. Mom looked over their application, and they seemed like responsible people, so she called them.

However, not every dog was so lucky. Zooey was nine years old, and she'd been with us for a few months. It seemed like nobody wanted to adopt an older dog. Dad said that was a shame because older dogs made wonderful companions. Zooey's previous owner had treated her terribly, and when she was sent to us she was injured. I remember how angry Dad seemed at the time. "No dog should be treated like that,“ he said.

When Zooey came to us, she was upset around everyone. She barked at our two dogs as if in defense and backed away when I tried to approach her. But with our considerate care, it wasn't long before Zooey trusted us. I took her on walks around the neighborhood and got her used to other people and dogs. She took a real liking to Surfer. In fact, they often curled together as they napped(打盹).

The Parkers soon arrived, and we all went into the backyard so they could meet with Surfer. Zooey followed us out, her tail wagging lazily, as Surfer rolled in the grass with the two Parker children.

    注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

    2.至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;
