二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Sunday, 31 August

We’ve been in China for a month now. Dad, Mom, Harry and I moved to Tianjin on 25 August. We’re not very far from Beijing. Two days ago, we celebrated my 16th birthday. It was great celebrating in China; the only thing that was strange was the cake—here they’re not as sweet as the ones in New York. On Monday school starts—I wonder what it will be like.

    Monday, 1 September

On my first day I was looking around for a locker to put my books in. However, here all the students keep all of their books at their desks. We stay in the same classroom because apparently we don’t have to go from class to class—teachers come to us!

Today we selected teacher assistants for each subject. Their duties are to collect homework, make announcements, and do other things for the teachers and the students. It’s kind of a big deal here! Since I am from the US, I was asked to be the English assistant. I felt so proud but quite nervous at the same time because I wasn’t sure what I had to do, but I accepted the job anyway.

    Friday, 3 October

Boy, what a week! Now we have nine classes every day, including the morning class, a combination of our American schools “Homeroom” and “Study Hall”. I think Chinese students work too much! I have to do my homework when I get back home. I don’t even have time to watch TV or surf the Internet like before. I sometimes miss New York and my school because we didn’t have to study so much. We had more time to hang out with our classmates and neighbors; here, besides their usual classes, students take part in weekend classes in subjects such as English, Chinese and math.

I get a lot of attention, being from another country. Everyone wants to practice English with me! A really cute girl even asked me for my phone number on my second day and sent me a text message! I’m making a lot more friends now. I just need a lot of help to improve my Chinese. Some students want to do a language exchange program with me. Nice!

【1】The passage mentions all the following points EXCEPT _______ .

    A.physics study

    B.food flavour (风味)

    C.weekend classes

    D.language exchange programs

【2】According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the teacher assistant’s duty?

    A.Collecting homework.

    B.Making announcements.

C.Helping teachers with small errands (差事) .

    D.Teaching classmates.

【3】Where is this passage most probably from?

    A.A storybook.

    B.A guide book.

    C.A diary.

    D.A magazine.

  • 27、   A KidZania opened in Frisco, Texas on November 23, 2019. The indoor play area is unique because it promises to teach children about the real world—while they have a great time!

A KidZania is an interactive mini-city created for children between 4 and 14 years old, where they can walk freely, exploring various activities. The goal is for them to learn about the world through realistic role-play. That's why you'll find theaters, shops, and office buildings inside the city walls along with pedestrians and tiny vehicles.

At these places, kids can spend about 20 minutes per session being firefighters, mail carriers, construction workers, dentists, nail technicians, bankers, or even broadcast journalists.

If a kid wants to be a doctor or see what it's like to be a veterinarian(兽医), they can get a taste of it, said Mike Laudizio, KidZania's” mayor (市长)”and general manager.

They get their hands in it, and it really gives them the freedom to explore the city.”

Since children learn best by doing, they are more likely to leave KidZania with a newfound appreciation for different jobs and a better grasp of how the world works. Best of all, while the kids work, they earn KidZos by doing their jobs well or by achieving small goals like washing their hands or participating in branded activities. They have the choice of cashing in for toys and candy at the gift shop or saving up in the KidZania bank for another day.

Our only question is when one of these will open for adults. This place looks great fun, and it can teach kids important lessons about the world we live in. Let's hope more KidZanias open in the U. S.

  • 28、   China's Bao Yongqing has been named the overall winner of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition for 2019, claiming one of the world's top photography awards.

The competition is developed and produced by the Natural History Museum in London. This year's competition, the 55th, drew more than 48,000 entries from 100 countries. The winning entry by Bao, a native of Qinghai province, is titled The Moment. It captures a remarkable standoff between a Tibetan fox and a marmot(土拨鼠), and was taken on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. "Photographically, it is quite simply the perfect moment," said Roz Kidman Cox, the chairwoman of the judging panel. "The expressive intensity of the postures holds you transfixed, and the thread of energy between the raised paws seems to hold the protagonists in perfect balance", Cox said. To have captured such a powerful interaction between a Tibetan fox and a marmot — two species key to the ecology of this high-grassland region — is extraordinary. Museum Director Michael Dixon said the picture captured "nature's ultimate challenge——the battle for survival".

Bao, in a group interview on Wednesday, said of the photo: "It is very difficult and rare to capture this kind of moment, so I knew it was something very special. It took about two or three hours to get this photo. I was watching them for a long time. I have paid attention to this competition for a long time, and my first purpose was to show my image to the world, and secondly to protect the environment and my homeland," he said. " In my hometown, everyone looks after the animals, so when I go home with this award, it will be an encouragement to our people to be more protective of animals and the environment." In addition, the photographer said : "This competition is one of the most important among photographers in China, so I wanted to draw people's attention to animal protection. I hope it will introduce a passion for animals to more people."

The exhibition at the Natural History Museum in Kensington will open on Friday and run through the end of May next year, when it will go on a national and international tour. Entries for next year's competition will be accepted beginning on Oct. 21.

C.The competition drew worldwide attention, making it the best event in photography.

D.Entries are strictly restricted, mainly focused on endangered animals.

A.His capturing a crucial moment between two typical species.

    B.His expertise in photography.

C.His passionate devotion to wildlife protection.

D.His publicizing the knowledge of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

4What can we infer from the passage?

A.In Bao’s hometown, everyone looks after animals.

B.Taking photos can sometimes be painstaking.

C.Photograph is sure to raise public awareness of animal protection.

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

There is nothing unusual about a single language dying. Communities have come and gone throughout history, and with them their language. But what is happening today is extraordinary, judged by the early standards. According to the best estimates(估计), about half of the total 6,000 languages are going to die out in the next century. On average, there is a language dying out somewhere in the world every two weeks or so.

It is too late to do anything to help many languages, where the speakers are too few or too old, and where the community is too busy just trying to survive to care about their language. But many languages are not in such a serious position. Often, where languages are seriously endangered, there are things that can be done to give new life to them.

There are some famous cases showing what can be done — Welsh alone among the Celtic languages, is not only stopping its steady decline towards extinction(灭绝) but showing signs of real growth. Two Language Acts protect the status of Welsh, and its presence is increasingly in evidence wherever you travel in Wales. Maori in New Zealand has been maintained by a system of so-called "language nest", which provides children under five with a setting in which they are frequently exposed to the language. The hope is that the children will in turn become role models to a new generation of young children as they grow older. If good descriptions and materials are available, even extinct languages can be saved. Kaurna from South Australia, is an example. This language had been extinct for about a century, but had been quite well documented. So, when a strong movement grew for its revival(复活), it was possible to bring it back from death.

It is too soon to predict the future of these revived languages, but in some parts of the world they are attracting the very range of positive attitudes and grass roots support. In such unexpected but heart-warming ways we might see the grand total of languages slightly increased.

  • 41、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

    What Makes an Ideal Friend?

To say what an ideal friend is is not the easiest thing to do. Each person has his or her own opinion of what one would be. However, speaking generally, there are certain features that most people consider characteristic of an ideal friend. Loyal, trustworthy, and open to show weakness are common qualities that the majority of people attach to ideal friends.

Loyalty is a usual quality given to ideal friends. According to Psychology Today, “Loyalty is valued early on in all of our relationships, from the time we make our first friendships. We need friends who won’t spill our secrets to others, gossip about us, or allow others to criticize us”. The worst action between friends is not keeping one’s word.

Ideal friends are also usually referred to as being trustworthy. In a statement by Psychology Today, they say that, “Trustworthiness is often the “make or break” element in any interpersonal relationship. Any unfaithful action, regardless of recognized degree, can destroy a relationship. Trustworthiness consists of several elements, including honesty, dependability, and loyalty, and while each is important to successful relationships, honesty and dependability have been identified as the most vital in the area of friendships”. In light of this, a universal complaint of friends is a lack of honesty, and this is at the heart of being trustworthy.

In line with being honest is also the ability to show one’s weaknesses. According to the Book of Life, “The ideal friend doesn’t try to prove how powerful and successful they are; on the contrary, quite often they let us know awkward and potentially embarrassing things about themselves. They show how much they trust us by confessing failings and sorrows which would open them up to possible disgrace from the world beyond. They offer us the gift of their defenselessness”. That openness is treasured, as to be close to an individual, one must be willing to share his or her true feelings and states.
