二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、US student Vanessa Tahay stands out from the other teenagers in her school. Her skin is dark, her accent is thick, and if you ask her, she will tell you these are the things she is proudest of. Tahay is a poet, and at 18 she was considered among the best in Los Angeles.

When she is on the stage, audiences often go silent. They also laugh, shout and cry. But this doesn’t come easily for someone who comes from a village that sits at the base of a huge mountain range in Central America. When she first appeared at school, she was teased by others for being short and different. She never spoke, so they called her “mouse”.

“How do I defend myself?” Tahay thought. “I don’t know how.”

“Keep going,” her mother would tell her. “At some point, you’ll learn.”

She spent hours after school and on weekends watching the same DVDs: English without Barriers.

Tahay’s elder brother, Elmer, persuaded her to go to the after-school poetry club. In the last six years, her English teacher Laurie Kurnick has turned Cleveland Charter High School’s poetry program into one of the most respected in the city. Her team draws from the likes of D.H. Laurence, Pat Mora and Kendrick Lamar to create poems about their own lives. The poems focus on many things —some funny, some painful.

The first time Tahay read the group’s poems, chills went up her spine (脊柱). “I wish I could write like that,” she thought. “I want to say something.”

She wrote her first poem about her first year in America. She called it Invisible. The day her turn came to recite in front of the team, she broke down crying. She cried for 15 minutes. “I had so much held in,” Tahay said. “I couldn’t even finish it.”

But she kept at it despite her less-than-perfect grammar, spelling and diction (措辞). Still, she wouldn’t tell her friends about her poetry because she worried they would make fun of her.

But with time, her poems changed her. “They gave me pride,” Tahay said. “They told me that I’m worth something.”

“She had this innocence,” Kurnick said. “This willingness to be genuine and show you things you don’t ever see.”

【1】What did Tahay’s mother suggest she do when she was teased by others?

    A.Fight with them bravely.

    B.Report them to her teachers.

    C.Ignore them and keep going.

D.Try hard to make friends with them.

【2】What are the themes of Tahay and her team’s poems?

A.Their admiration for the great poets.

    B.Their appreciation of natural beauty.

C.Their expectations of a better future.

D.Funny and painful stories about their lives.

【3】How did Tahay probably feel when she first read the group’s poems?

    A.She was cold.

    B.She was excited.

    C.She was nervous.

    D.She was frightened.

【4】How did Tahay benefit from writing poems?

A.She felt more confident about herself.

B.She won many national poetry competitions.

C.She became the first student poet in the city.

D.She improved her grammar and spelling greatly.

  • 27、   Small talk—the likes of “What do you have there? Popcorn?” or “The weather today is beautiful, isn’t it?”—is meaningless and a waste of time, according to some people. But scientists believe that it is actually more useful than it may appear to be.

One example comes when you are on a train or a plane. The thought of talking to the stranger sitting beside you can be scary, because you know the conversation is sure to be awkward. But a study by the University of Chicago in the US found that people who chat to strangers enjoy a better ride than those who sit in silence or occupy themselves with their phones.

In the study, researchers asked people at Chicago train stations to start conversations with fellow travelers. Most of them refused to do so at first because they expected not to get a friendly answer. But the result turned out to be just the opposite—most strangers were not only willing to be talked to, but also pleasant to talk to.

“Human beings are social animals,” Nicholas Epley, one of the lead researchers, told Live Science. “Other people are people, too. And it turns out that they’d like to get to know you.”

Apart from making you happier, small talk with strangers can also help you feel connected to your surroundings. Previous studies found that when people are frequently smiled at, made eye contact with and spoken to at coffee shops, they tend to have a stronger sense of belonging instead of feeling like they are being ignored and left out.

And if you are already comfortable enough to make small talk with strangers, you should try to develop it into something “bigger”.

A 2010 study proved that having a deep and meaningful conversation gives you even more happiness than small talk. Participants in the study—79 college students—reported after the four-day experiment that they were much happier when they had a third as much small talk and twice as many in-depth conversations.

But deep conversations can start with small talk, can’t they? So the first step is to start talking, no matter how casual the topic is. And who knows, maybe an opening line as simple as “I like your hat” could lead to a serious conversation in which you learn something new from a stranger.

1Why are most people willing to have a talk during a trip, according to Nicholas Epley?

A.Most people are nice to strangers.

B.People are naturally curious about others.

C.People are afraid of loneliness or boredom.

D.People try to show their good side to strangers.

2Which of the following is a benefit of small talk?

    A.Wasting less time.

    B.Developing useful contacts.

C.Disconnecting from phones for a while.

D.Feeling like being a part of your surroundings.

3According to the 2010 study, in what way can people get more happiness from talking with strangers?

A.Starting with serious topics. B.Starting with casual topics.

C.Making it important and deep. D.Choosing pleasant surroundings.

4What is the author’s attitude toward small talk?

    A.Supportive. B.Negative.

    C.Doubtful. D.Objective.

  • 28、   China is known for its long history, rich culture, and cute pandas. It’s also known for some of the worst air quality in the world. But the Asian country is now using a natural weapon against air pollution — trees.

In February, China’s government announced plans to cover at least 32,400 square miles with forest. That is about the size of Ireland. Some 60,000 soldiers will take charge of the tree-planting program. Most of the trees will be planted in Hebei Province. That is an area surrounding China’s capital, Beijing.

Huang Wei is an environmentalist who works for Greenpeace East Asia. She is optimistic about the plan. “Trees act as a sink to absorb carbon dioxide and other pollutants,” she said. Carbon dioxide is a gas that traps the Earth’s heat. It contributes to global warming.

Why is China’s air filled with harmful chemicals? It’s because the country relies on coal-fired power plants. When coal is burned, PM2.5 is produced. PM2.5 is a pollutant. It can cause shortness of breath, heart attacks, and even death.

Just two years ago, pollution levels were so high in Beijing that schools and factories had to close. Huang hopes China’s tree-planting plan will reduce the nation’s suffering from air pollution.

The Chinese government is getting help from others in its drive to make the nation greener. Stefano Boeri is an Italian architect and urban planner. He is leading an effort to plant vertical (垂直的) forests in China.

Boeri’s designs have already taken root in the city of Nanjing, China. That’s where the Nan-jing Green Towers are under construction. The building has two towers. Thousands of trees and hanging plants will grow on the balconies and rooftops.

Boeri says his goal is to design buildings that help the environment and improve air quality. He also hopes to encourage a new generation of green architects.

1What measure is China taking to improve the air quality according to the passage?

    A.Planting more tress.

    B.Closing the electricity factories.

    C.Forbidding people to burn coal.

    D.Designing new buildings.

2What does Huang Wei think of the new plan?

    A.Doubtful. B.Uncertain.

    C.Promising. D.Ineffective.

3Which of the following has the closest meaning to “contributes to” in paragraph 3?

    A.Adapts to. B.Results in.

    C.Refers to. D.Concentrates on.

4Why is Stefano Boeri invited to China to design buildings?

A.Because his design can keep the polluted air outside the house.

B.Because his buildings are built in forest.

C.Because his design is special with two towers.

D.Because his design is environmentally friendly.

  • 29、   Two friends have an argument that breaks up their friendship forever, even though neither one can remember how the whole thing got started. Such sad events happen over and over in high schools across the country. In fact, according to an official report on youth violence, “In our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment, but the terrible reality of violence”. Given that this is the case, why aren’t students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems, drive cars, or stay physically fit?

First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable. A report on violence among middle school and high school students indicates that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult (侮辱). For examplea fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime. Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to violence. The problem isn’t in the sandwich, but in the way students deal with the conflict.

Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable, they can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution(解决): stay calm. Once the student feels calmerhe or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well. Rude words, name—calling, and accusations only add fuel to the emotional fire. On the other hand, soft words spoken at a normal sound level can put out the fire before it explodes out of control.

After both sides have calmed down, they can use another key strategy (策略) for conflict resolution: listening. Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side, and the other person should listen without interrupting. Afterward, the listener can ask non-threatening questions to clarify the speaker’s position. Then the two people should change roles.

Finally, students need to consider what they are hearing. This doesn’t mean trying to figure out what’s wrong with the other person. It means understanding what the real issue is and what both sides are trying to accomplish. For example, a shouting match over a peanut butter sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is unwilling to try new things. Students need to ask themselves questions such as these: How did this start? What do I really want? What am I afraid of? As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller. Even if it doesn’t, careful thought helps both sides figure out a mutual solution.

There will always be conflict in schoolsbut that doesn’t mean there needs to be violence. After students in Atlanta started a conflict resolution program, according to Educators for Social Responsibility, “64 percent of the teachers reported less physical violence in the classroom; 75 percent of the teachers reported an increase in student cooperation; and 92 percent of the students felt better about themselves”. Learning to resolve conflicts can help students deal with friends, teachers, parents, bosses, and coworkers. In that way, conflict (冲突) resolution is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools across the country.

1This article is mainly about ________.

    A.the lives of school children

B.the cause of arguments in schools

    C.how to analyze youth violence

D.how to deal with school conflicts

2From Paragraph 2 we can learn that ________.

A.violence is more likely to occur at lunchtime

B.a small conflict can lead to violence

C.students tend to lose their temper easily

D.the eating habit of a student is often the cause of a fight

3Why do students need to ask themselves the questions stated in Paragraph 5?

A.To find out who is to blame.

B.To get ready to try new things.

C.To make clear what the real issue is.

D.To figure out how to stop the shouting match.

4After the conflict resolution program was started in Atlanta, it was found that ________.

A.there was a decrease in classroom violence

B.there was less student cooperation in the classroom

C.more teachers felt better about themselves in schools

    D.the teacher—student relationship greatly improved
