26、Just a year ago, the colors were bright under the waves. Now it’s gray — the Maldivian reef is dead. The coral is killed by the pressure of rising temperatures.
Coral reefs are areas underwater where small creatures live. The coral is hard material formed on the bottom of the sea by the skeletons of those creatures. But the world has lost about half its coral reefs in the last 30 years. Scientists are working to prevent their destruction. Due to global warming, over 90 percent of corals are expected to die by 2050. “To lose coral reefs is to fundamentally undermine the health of a very large proportion of the human race,” said Ruth Gates, director of the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology.
Why are coral reefs important? Coral reefs support a fourth of all marine species, as well as half a billion people worldwide. They serve as barriers to protect coastlines from the storms. They provide billions of dollars from tourism, fishing and other trade. They are also used in medical research for cures for diseases. “Everyone should be concerned,” said biologist Ove Guldberg at Australia’s University of Queensland. “This is not just some distant dive destination. This is the basic structure of the ecosystem we depend on.”
The ocean is getting warmer. A rising temperature of just one to two degree Celsius can force coral to expel the algae (驱逐海藻) that live there. This leaves their white skeletons uncovered. It is a process called “bleaching”. Sixteen percent of the world’s corals died of bleaching in 1998. The problem has become much worse in recent years.
“We’ve lost 50 percent of the reefs, but that means we still have 50 percent left,” said Ruth Gates, who is working in Hawaii to breed corals that can better withstand increasing temperatures. She is also trying to “train” corals to survive rising temperatures. Gates says it is time to start “thinking outside the box”— find creative ways to help them.

27、Break a Bad Habit
I used to have a roommate named Heather who wanted to stop smoking. I told her one tip I’d learned from a smoker who had stopped successfully: “【1】”
She stocked. Replacing a bad habit with a good one is possible—if you’re willing. Here’s how to do it successfully:
Make sure the decision is yours.
【2】It’s even worse (impossible, really) when change is someone else’s idea. You have to be the one to want it. You’re far more likely to be successful if you make the decision for yourself (not your mother, or doctor). What do you most feel ready to change about you right now?
【3】
I used to go to AA with my dad and I remember something often repeated there: “If you don’t want to slip, don’t go where it’s slippery.” This meant: Enjoy “dry” places and activities, like a walk in the woods. Find some friends who you can spend a little more time with who doesn’t share the habit you’re hoping to reduce.
Distract(分散注意力) yourself.
Favourite food is alluring(诱人的) no matter how full we are, am I right? My Favourite food is pancakes. 【4】A great technique(技巧) when you aren’t hungry but want to give in is to distract your mind. Instead of opening your fridge, leave the kitchen and start doing something in your bedroom, for example.
Remember to reward yourself.
Rewarding ourselves matters. 【5】If you’ve stopped sugar, for example, you can treat yourself to a nice haircut or even a weekend away.

If you want to improve your self-esteem, here are some useful tips.
★Try to stop having negative thoughts about yourself. If you’re used to focusing on your shortcomings, start thinking about positive aspects of yourself. 【2】
★View mistakes as learning opportunities. Accept that you will make mistakes because everyone does. 【3】 Remind yourself that a person’s talents are constantly developing, and everyone does well in different things.
★【4】 If you realize that you’re unhappy with something that you can change, then start today. If it’s something you can’t change(like your height), then start to work toward loving yourself the way you are.
★Make a contribution. Help a classmate who’s having trouble, offer to clean up your neighborhood or volunteer your time in some other way. 【5】
★Have fun. Enjoy spending time with the people you care about and doing the things you love. Relax and have a good time — and avoid putting your life on hold.
It takes some work to develop good self-esteem, but once you do it’s a skill you’ll have for life.
A.Mistakes are part of learning.
B.Recognize what you can change and what you can’t.
C.Low self-esteem is a negative evaluation(评价) of oneself.

29、 Big changes in agriculture are taking place in Singapore. The small, Southeast Asian nation is leading a farming revolution, according to the Reuters news agency.
Singapore covers 724 square kilometers of land and only one percent of that land is used for agriculture. Food production costs are higher there than the rest of Southeast Asia. As climate change and population growth threaten food supplies, the pressure is on new farmers to answer the government's call to “grow more with less".
"Whenever 1 talk about food security in Sin gapore, I tell people don't think land —think space, because you can go upwards and sideways." said Paul Teng, an agriculture professor at Nanyang Technological University.
There are more than 30 vertical (垂直的)farms in Singapore — ones that grow up, not across, the land. Sustenir Agriculture is one of these businesses. Its hydroponic (水栽法的) farm grows non-native foods like cherry tomatoes and strawberries inside buildings under artificial lighting. Then it sells the produce to local supermarkets and online stores. Sustenir raised $16 million from investors (投资人)last year. The money will be used to expand operations in Singapore.
However, not everyone thinks the new technology is best. Egg farmer William Ho says the government should not depend so much on agriculture technology businesses. “ Many of them have failed. That's why I'm always asking the government why don't you invest in us old-timers. We are more practical," he said. Professor Paul Teng said an issue for urban farmers is that the high cost of the technology makes their products too pricey for many people .
