  • 26、   Ida Nelson was relaxing in her sister's bathroom when she heard the noise of a small airplane circling the nearby airport.

It was 11:30 at night in the Alaskan village of Igiugig, population 70,and, as she told the New York Times, “Any time a plane flies over that late, you know something is wrong.”

Nelson and her sister rushed out of the bathroom, ran to the window, and saw the problem: The airport's runway lights were out.

Nelson threw on some clothes, jumped into her SUV, and drove it to the airport, where she found a local pilot trying to tum on the lights with his hands.

“Normally, if you push the button 10 or 15 times, the lights will just light up,” Nelson told the New York Times. Not this time. Meanwhile, she and the pilot learned that the small airplane was a medevac there to transport a seriously ill local girl to the nearest hospital, 280 miles away in Anchorage.

Nelson had a plan. Driving her SUV to the end of the runway, she shone her headlights on the road for the plane to follow. Great idea, but it wasn't enough. More light was needed, so a neighbor called nearly every home in the village—32 of them.

Within 20 minutes, 20 vehicles arrived at the airport, many of the drivers still in pajamas. Following directions from the medevac pilot, the cars lined up on one side of the runway.

The medevac made its final approach and, guided by the headlights, landed safely. The young patient was loaded onto the plane, and it immediately took off again. Her illness was never publicly disclosed, but she has since been released from the hospital.

In a world filled with uncertainty, what happened in the little community was a big deal. Not so much for Nelson. As she told CNN, in Igiugig, coming together “is kind of a normal deal.”

  • 28、   Nowadays with the development of technology people have gradually relied on the mobile phones seriously. Many people especially the younger generation like to use social media to connect with others. However everyone is ignoring an important point- face-to-face communication between people is missing.

Social media is all about connecting with others. But a new study suggests that too much social media use leads to disconnection and loneliness. The study finds that heavy use of platforms such as Facebook Snapchat and Instagram is associated with feelings of isolation among young adults.

Brian Primack and his team in the study surveyed that 1787 U.S. adults aged 19to 32 and asked them about their usage of 11 social media platforms. Surprisinglypeople that spend more time on social media feel lonelier than others.

Tom Kersting a psychotherapist said“Although people think being on social media all the time makes them‘connected’ to others they are actually‘disconnected’because the more time one spends behind a screen the less time one spends face-to-face.”Kersting continued. “They are spending a lot of time looking at everyone else’s posts where they are where they are going and what they are doing. The constant connection to everyone else’s‘perfect’life experiences causes feelings of being left out and of being lonely.”

So what’s the answer?“It’s simple” says Kersting—although it does involve a significant amount of willpower.“The solution to this is refusing the addiction to look at everyone else’s life.Just focus on your own life where you’re going what you are grateful for and what you want to achieve in this world. Then go out and do it andstop wasting so much time comparing.”

    D. More time on social media contributes to more friends.

3According to Kersting how to prevent people feeling left out and lonely?

  • 29、Your clients and colleagues don’t have time to engage fully with every e-mail they get. Some of them receive hundreds of messages per day. That’s why they start with the ones they can deal with quickly. They may never get around to answering — or even reading — the rest.

So how do you earn their attention? Try these tips:

Stick to standard capitalization and punctuation. Conventions of good writing may seem like a waste of time for e-mail, especially when you’re tapping out messages on a handheld device. But it’s a matter of getting things right — the little things. Even if people in your group don’t capitalize or punctuate in their messages, stand out as someone who does. 【1】And their abbreviated style can be confusing. It takes less time to write a clear message the first time around than it does to follow up to explain what you meant to say.

Be brief — but not too brief. 【2】The more they have to scroll or swipe, the less receptive they’ll       be to your message. They’ll probably just skim it and miss important details — or skip it altogether. So rarely compose more than a single screen of reading. Focus your content, and tighten your language. But as you’re trimming the fat from your message, keep the meat complete. When giving a project update, for example, supply enough background information to guide your readers. Consider your message from their perspective. They aren’t as absorbed in your project as you are, and they probably have many other things going on. So remind them where things stood when you last sent an update, and describe what’s happened since then.

【3】 Before hitting “Send”, check your subject line. If it’s blank, your message will get lost in your recipient’s overstuffed inbox. Are you asking someone to take action? Highlight that in the subject line. Make your request easy to find — and fulfill.

Copy people cautiously. Include only those who will immediately grasp why they’re on the thread; don’t automatically click on “Reply All.” Your correspondent may have been over inclusive with the “Copy” list, and if you repeat that mistake, you’ll continue to annoy the recipients who shouldn’t be there. 【4】

A.Add a short but descriptive subject line.

B.Having others waiting for your e-mails hurts their enthusiasm for work.

C.It could get you a bad reputation as being careless.

    D.People find long e-mails annoying and energy-draining.

E.Rushed e-mails that violate the basic norms of written language show carelessness.

F.Sending out e-mails after working hour could be seen as being impolite.

Scientists have proved what students have long suspected: Maths equations can actually trigger physical pain.

The higher a person’s anxiety of a maths task, the more it 2 activity in regions of their brain associated with visceral (内脏的) threat detection, and often the experience of pain itself.

However, the researchers say their study examines the pain response associated with anticipating an anxiety-provoking event, rather than the pain associated with a 3 event itself. A maths task itself is not painful but 4 the thought of it is highly unpleasant to certain people.

“Maths can be difficult, and for those with high levels of mathematics-anxiety (HMAs), math is associated with tension, apprehension (忧虑) and fear,” the researchers said in their paper titled. When Math Hurts. “5, this relation was not seen during math performance, 6 that it is not that math itself hurts, rather, the anticipation of math is painful. These results may also provide a potential neural mechanism to explain why (people with) HMAs tend to 7 math and math-related situations, which in turn can bias (使有偏见) (those with) high levels of mathematics-anxiety away from taking math classes or even entire math-related 8 paths. We provide the first neural 9 indicating the nature of the subjective experience of math-anxiety.
