24、In many families, the oldest child is often expected (期待) to take care of younger ones, take on more housework, and tend to (倾向于) have more expectations placed on them. But why do older children seem to “always have to do everything”?
Parents give housework to the most capable (有能力的). Sometimes, parents need children to do some housework when they are busy. Because the oldest child is the most likely to be able to carry out the work, parents tend to give the housework to that child. It doesn’t necessarily mean that younger children aren’t as capable of doing housework. Sometimes, parents overlook (忽略) younger children because they seem so young. However, it’s important to ask yourself, “Are younger children now ready to take on more work?” “Can we hand out some of the housework to the younger ones?” Remember, many hands make light work.
Younger children look up to the oldest. Whether older children want them to or not, their younger siblings (兄弟姐妹) look up to them. This may put kind of pressure (压力) on the oldest to do things to help the younger children go on to look up to them. In this way, older children often jump in to help younger ones with math homework, reading, housework, etc. As a result, older children, not the younger ones, have more chances to be leaders.
Parents put pressure on the oldest to be an example. How many times do we hear a parent say to the younger ones, “If you just would do what your brother does…”? Saying this, a lot of parents put pressure on the oldest to work as an example to their younger siblings. This may help the older ones take on more responsibilities (责任), but it can go too far. Some older children are likely to become people-pleasers. They tend to say “yes” to others just to please everyone but themselves.
So, be sure to spend time with your oldest child. While we’re placing all those responsibilities on our oldest kids, we’d better remember that it’s important to spend time with them. It’s easy to become caught up in younger siblings’ needs, but that doesn’t mean our older kids don’t need us! When you’re working on the housework and responsibilities for the next week, make sure you spend some time with your oldest doing something fun.

In 1987, a small company named Huawei was started in Shenzhen. After more than 30 years of development, the company has now beaten Apple and become the world’s second-largest maker of smart phones behind Korea’s Samsung. It has also become the world’s largest supplier (供应商) of 5G.
But recently, Huawei faced some difficulties. The U.S. government ordered a ban (禁令) on its sales in America. American officials said Huawei gave information (that it collected) to the Chinese government. At the same time, the U.S. government planned to stop selling parts and services to Huawei, which was believed that Huawei’s business would be hurt.
“We have never received such a request from the Chinese government and we have never tried to get into other systems (系统) to collect information.” Ren Zhengfei, Huawei’s founder and president said. “The ban from the U.S. would have little effect on our company. Huawei has enough ability to deal with the problems.” Ren added.
In an interview several years ago, Ren Zhengfei said, “I started Huawei with only £4,000 at the beginning, but now it has become a $100 billion company. The experience was not as romantic (浪漫的) as you imagine.”
Facing the ban of the U.S., Huawei is growing. Huawei’s smart phone sales around the world rose 50 percent compared to a year earlier in the first three months of 2019. At the same time, sales from both Samsung and Apple fell. So far, Huawei has grown into the world’s largest telecommunications equipment (电信设备) supplier, selling in 170 countries! 27、Flowers make people happy. Some new studies by Rutgers University scientists support the idea strongly, and the experts go on to guess that flowers have flourished(繁荣) on the earth, with their beauty evolving(进化) in recent several thousand years, partly because humans love them.
In the first test, 122 men and women were given either a flower, a pen, or nothing. Those who got flowers smiled more and talked more.
In the second test, bouquets(花束) were sent by flower sellers to 113 men and women. All 113 got flowers and a notebook, but some got them earlier and received a second bouquet when the others got theirs. By now you can guess the result. The more flowers, the more smiles.
From there, it’s a bit of a jump to the idea that flowers grow better because we love them.
Geneticist(遗传学家) Terry McGuire suggests that nature’s prettier flowers continued to live and develop well because people didn’t destroy them when they cleared for agriculture(农业). Instead, they grew them and have been doing so for over 5,000 years. “Because they make us happy, we take care of them. In that sense they’re like dogs. They are the pets of the plant world.” McGuire says.
Here is one way that might have worked:
Many kinds of flowers that are now planted used to grow only when people arrived there, McGuire explains. “As humans moved into a new place to clear land for agriculture, these flowers would have been weeds.” “These prettier flowers might have been kept because of beauty. The seeds(种子) would have been kept and replanted. Over time, the best of these flowers might have been chosen and the seeds more carefully kept.”
