Do you want to improve your physics and chemistry grades? Well, maybe you should first learn something about the struggles of great scientists.
The American Psychological Association did an interesting study. More than 400 students from schools in New York City took part in it. The students were divided into three groups. Group 1 read a typical textbook that describes the achievements of great scientists. Group 2 read about those scientists' personal struggles. The last group read about the scientists' intellectual struggles. These stories about struggles also told students how the scientists dealt with these obstacles.
The students took a science exam before the study. After the sixweek study, they took another. Scientists found those in Groups 2 and 3 improved their science grades. Students in Group 1 didn't see a grade increase. Some of them even had lower grades after the study.
The study was led by Xiaodong LinSiegler, a teacher at Columbia University. According to Xiaodong, kids often think Einstein was truly intelligent. They believe they will never match him. Many of them fail to realize that any success requires a long journey. Along the way, there are many failures.
Students who read the struggle stories more probably said that great scientists were like themselves. The “great minds” also had to overcome obstacles to achieve success.
Xiaodong says today's science textbooks fail to bring science to life. As a result, students seldom regard science as part of their everyday lives. Instead, they just see a long list of facts that they have to remember. Xiaodong thinks textbooks should include more stories about how great scientists had to struggle to succeed. And students should focus more on how these scientists dealt with the obstacles they met along the way.

Millions of people in China are taking part in live-streaming ( 直 播 ) quiz shows after they download apps like Chongdingdahui, Huajiao Zhibo and Xigua Shipin. Different from TV quiz shows, anybody with a smartphone can take part in the shows every day, interacting ( 互 动 ) with other players at the same time.
The shows have hosts to present the questions and make the show more lively by telling jokes or giving some background for the questions. Each online player has 10 seconds to answer a question, with each show taking around 20 to 30 minutes. Players can win prizes as small as 1 yuan and as high as more than 40,000 yuan, depending on the total amount ( 数量) of prize money and the number of winners.
The questions are chosen from a wide range of topics, including literature, geography, maths, biology and so on. For example, players may be asked how many legs crabs have, or what Australia’s national flower is.
To draw new users, the apps offer “redo cards ( 复活卡)” to new players, as well as to those who have invited new players to join. Dear Mr Scott, I expect you may be slightly surprised to receive a letter from your next-door neighbor, but I have to raise a theme that it will be easier for me to discuss in writing. You may have noticed that I have a line of apple trees running along the fence(栅栏)that separates our two gardens. You may also have felt happy when you see your two children sitting on your grass by the fence. And you may also have noticed that my apple trees bend over the fence and seem to look down at your children with interest. It is only natural that your children should sometimes seem to return that interest. And it is quite legal(合法的)for them to show that interest by picking all the apples that hang over on your side of the fence. But to tell you the truth, Mr Scott, I am tired of seeing your children, day after day, destroy the branches of every one of my apple trees. And it seems that a war has been fought on one side of my apple trees. Besides, I am more tired of waking up on these fine autumn mornings to find even the apples on MY side of the fence much less in number. I know this too is the work of your children, since last night I was woken at midnight by the noise they were making when climbing one of my trees, and (as they may have told you) I drove them away. Yours sincerely, Becky Aldrin |
