24、Today, our children spend more and more time online. Many children spend a lot of their free time playing games on the Internet, on video game systems or on their mobile phones. In the UK, 99% of teen kids aged 8 to 15 play video games every week, and children as young as five play video games regularly (有规律地). This information tells that the advantages and dangers of video games must be carefully considered.
For many people, ________ They have bright lights, funny cartoons and exciting stories. Video games also make you think in a creative way and you have to move your hands and eyes quickly. This can improve the way that a child’s brain works. Video games also make children use their imagination (想象力). The player has to do many creative things, like drawing and building things. Video games are also a good way to teach children about technology because they can learn how computers and other devices (设备) work while they play.
However, a recent study suggests that video games can also be bad for children. First, children can download (下载) many games for free. They don’t need money, so they don’t need to ask their parents if they can download the games. This means that parents often don’t know if their children are playing violent (暴力的) or scary games. Second, many children spend too much time playing games on computers, smartphones and iPads and this can lead to health problems – children who spend too much time on the computer and don’t exercise can become overweight. Third, if children spend too much time playing games instead of doing homework, they can have problems at school and get bad grades. Finally, video games can affect children’s social skills, they might not learn how to play with their friends.
In conclusion, it seems clear that video games have some advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, they are fun and educational. On the other hand, they can cause problems with children’s health and social skills. It is up to parents to know what games their children are playing and how much time they spend on them. Parents should also make sure their children get enough exercise and spend time with other children.

25、 Many people are afraid of sharks, but they usually do not know much about them. For example there are at least 350 kinds of sharks, and all of them eat meat. Some sharks are very big. The whole sharks are 9 to 12 meters long. But some sharks are very small. The spined pygmy sharks only 20-27 centimeters long. Sharks have a very long history. In fact, the earliest known sharks date back to more than 420 million years ago. Today, sharks live in every ocean in the world, but most sharks live in warm water. They keep the oceans clean because they eat sick fish and animals.
Most sharks have four to six rows of teeth. When a shark's tooth falls out, another tooth moves in from behind. Sharks do not have ears. However, they’ll “hear” sounds and movements in the water. When any sound of movement makes the water vibrate (振动), sharks can feel these vibrations, and these vibrations can help sharks find food. Sharks use their large eyes to find food, too. Most sharks can see clearly in little light. They often look for food in the dark, in the evening, or in the middle of the night.
Scientists want to learn more about sharks for several reasons. For example, cancer is common among many animals and people. However, few sharks have it. Scientists want to find out why sharks almost never get cancer. Maybe it can help people find some great ways to stop having cancer.

26、 Attention, everybody! You need to focus! And, in fact, it shouldn’t be difficult.
Some people say the average person’s attention span(持续时间)has declined to eight seconds—shorter than that of the goldfish. This, however, is not supported by science. Our ability to focus is actually very complex. It can’t just be measured using time. And scientists say the ability of healthy people to pay attention hasn’t become weaker. “There is no real evidence that it’s changed,” said Michael Posner, an American scientist.
However, it has been widely reported that our attention span has declined.
The claim is said to come from a report by Microsoft. In 2015, the American company published a 52-page report. It said the average human attention span had dropped from twelve to eight seconds. The report also mentioned the average attention span of goldfish(nine seconds). “That means goldfish are better at focusing than human beings,” it concluded. The report has been picked up hundreds of times.
But scientists say the report is not reliable(可信赖的). It is based on a 2008 study which followed only 25 people.
Edward Vogel is a scientist who studies human attention. Attention span, he says, is a very complex idea. It includes at least three abilities. The first is about the ability to focus on something for a certain period of time. The second describes the ability to avoid distraction(注意力分散). The third is about the ability to switch from one task to another. Scientists use lots of tests to measure these abilities.
You probably know very well whether you are good at focusing without taking any tests. In fact, if you’ve read this far, your attention span is certainly better than that of the goldfish!
【1】By writing this article, the author mainly wants to ________.
A.advise people to take attention span tests
B.correct people’s wrong idea about attention span
C.introduce people to the 2015 report by Microsoft
D.praise at Microsoft for publishing the 2015 report

A.was one second longer than that of the goldfish
B.was one second shorter than that of the goldfish
C.was three seconds longer than that of the goldfish
D.was three seconds shorter than that of the goldfish
【3】According to the article, attention span includes all of the following abilities EXCEPT ________.
A.the ability to avoid things that prevent you from focusing
B.the ability to move your attention from one task to another
C.the ability to pay attention to something for a period of time
D.the ability to find out the differences between two similar things
【4】Which of the following statements would the author agree to?
A.Any report published by Microsoft is unreliable.
B.It’s impossible for scientists to measure people’s attention span.
C.The average human attention span has declined to eight seconds
D.Few healthy people are really poorer at paying attention than the goldfish.
27、 The world’s largest radio telescope was finished in China.
FAST is a five-hundred-metre telescope. It is also called Tian-yan (“The Eye of Heaven”), with a dish the size of 30 football grounds, deep in the mountains of south-west China’s Guizhou Province. The giant dish is built on a bowl-like valley.
The surrounding area has “radio silence” as there are no towns and cities within a 5-kilometre radius(半径范围)and only one county centre within 25 kilometres.
FAST is made up of 4,450 panels(面板). The second largest radio telescope is in Russia. The bigger dish will e able to pick up weaker signals.
The radio telescope is like an ear, listening to meaningful radio messages from white noise in the universe. With the help of the telescope, we can receive weaker and more radio messages far away in space. It will help us to search for intelligent life outside of the Galaxy(银河系)and explore the origins of the universe. “Any of its discoveries will lead to a Nobel Prize,” said Joseph Taylor, a Nobel Prize winner.
The telescope is expected to remain the global leader for the next 10 to 20 years.
