One thing needed for humans to live in space is food that can be grown outside of Earth. Let’s look at some of the latest progress scientists have made in space farming.
Making small steps toward moon farming
Researchers at the University of Florida, US, have been able to grow plants in lunar soil. Although the thale cress (拟南芥) the crew planted grew slower than normal because of fewer nutrients (营养), this has been seen as a scientific breakthrough.
This scientific breakthrough is a step toward understanding how future explorers might be able to grow plants on the moon. It is also a key example of “solving some agricultural (农业) problems in certain areas on Earth.” said NASA administrator Bill Nelson.
Growing beef in orbit
Researchers at Israeli food-tech company Aleph Farms have been growing artificial (人造的) meat in space. In 2019, a team from the company was sent to the International Space Station to 3D print meat. Now they want to see if meat cells can grow naturally in space. The company is carrying out new tests to see how the cells work in zero gravity.
Testing for the best space rice
After a 23-day space journey on board, the Chang’e-5, 1,500 rice seeds have now successfully been planted on Earth and are growing in a greenhouse. They are set to be replanted at a research center of the South China Agricultural University, Guangdong province, at the end of the month, according to Global Times.
“The seeds have experienced special environments during the space travel, which affects the genetic variation (遗传变异) of rice seeds,” said Chen Zhiqiang, director of the lab center.
The research is seen as an important step to know which rice species have the genetics most suitable for space agriculture.

A.whether cows can live in a space station
B.what animals grow best in microgravity environment
C.if meat cells can grow in space conditions
D.how much money is needed for meat cells to grow
【3】Why are the rice seeds taken by Chang’e-5 so important?
A.They have been successfully planted on another planet.
B.They help understand factors that affect people hunger problems.
C.They can be seen as a new rice species.
D.They are being used to find the best rice to grow in space.
【4】What’s the best title of the passage?
