  • 21、

Animal training refers to teaching animals specific responses to specific conditions or stimuli (刺激). Training may be for the purpose of companionship, detection, protection, entertainment or all of the above.

An animal trainer may use various forms of reinforcement (强化) or punishment to condition an animal’s responses. There are many ways to train animals and as a general rule no legal requirements or certifications (证书) are required.

    Chickens

Training chickens has become a way for trainers of other animals (primarily dogs) to perfect their training technique.  Bob Bailey, former director of Animal Behavior Enterprises and the IQ Zoo, teaches in chicken training courses where trainers teach chickens to tell different shapes, to navigate an obstacle course and to chain behaviors together.

    Fish

Fish can also be trained. For example, a goldfish may swim toward its owner and follow him as he walks through the room, but will not follow anyone else. The fish may swim up and down, signaling the owner to turn on its aquarium (鱼缸) light when it is off, and it will skim the surface until its owner feeds it. Pet goldfish have also been taught to perform more complicated tasks, such as doing the limbo (a kind of dance) and pushing a miniature soccer ball into a net.

    PigS

Among all animals, they are the third cleverest — monkeys, dolphins and pigs. Scientists think the training of pigs is easier than the training of dogs and cats. Pigs have a very good sense of smell. They can find things nearby or faraway. They can also help the police to find out drugs at an airport or at a train station.

1Which is true according to the passage?

    A. Most people train animals because they need friends.

    B. Training animals requires some certifications.

    C. Training chickens is a way to improve the trainers’ skills.

    D. Bob Bailey is a professional animal trainer.

2According to the passage, a fish can   .

    A. be trained to follow anyone

    B. turn on its aquarium light when it is off

    C. signal its owner to get fed

    D. take part in a football game in the field

3Scientists think the training of pigs is easier because   .

    A. pigs do not bite like dogs

  • 22、The values of artistic works, according to cultural relativism(相对主义), are simply reflections of local social and economic conditions. Such a view, however, fails to explain the ability of some works of art to excite the human mind across cultures and through centuries.

History has witnessed the endless productions of Shakespearean plays in every major language of the world. It is never rare to find that Mozart packs Japanese concert halls, as Japanese painter Hiroshige does Paris galleries. Unique works of this kind are different from today’s popular art, even if they began as works of popular art. They have set themselves apart in their timeless appeal and will probably be enjoyed for centuries into the future.

In a 1757 essay, the philosopher David Hume argued that because “the general principles of taste are uniform(不变的) in human nature,” the value of some works of art might be essentially permanent. He observed that Homer was still admired after two thousand years. Works of this type, he believed, spoke to deep and unvarying features of human nature and could continue to exist over centuries.

Now researchers are applying scientific methods to the study of the universality of art. For example, evolutionary psychology is being used by literary scholars to explain the long-lasting themes and plot devices in fiction. The structures of musical pieces are now open to experimental analysis as never before. Research findings seem to indicate that the creation by a great artist is as permanent an achievement as the discovery by a great scientist.

【1】According to the passage, what do we know about cultural relativism? ________

    A. It introduces different cultural values.

    B. It relates artistic values to local conditions.

    C. It explains the history of artistic works.

    D. It excites the human mind throughout the world.

【2】In Paragraph 2, the artists are mentioned in order to show that__________.

    A. popular arts are hardly distinguishable from great arts

    B. history gives art works special appeal to set them apart

    C. great works of art can go beyond national boundaries

    D. great artists are skilled at combining various cultures

【3】According to Hume, some works of art can exist for centuries because__________.

    A. they are results of scientific study

    B. they appeal to unchanging features of human nature

    C. they are created by the world’s greatest artists

    D. they establish some general principles of art

【4】Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage? ________

    A. Are Popular Arts Permanent?

    B. Are Artistic Values Universal?

    C. Is Human Nature Uniform?

    D. Is Cultural Relativism Scientific?

Chile (智利) is famous for its many attractions, including Torres del Paine National Park and Easter Island . If you’re planning a visit, be sure to add “Mano del Desierto” or “Hand of the Desert”to your must-see list.

Standing 11 meters tall and made of iron and cement (混凝土), this sculpture (雕像) of a hand emerges (出现) from the sand in the Atacama Desert , which is known as the driest desert in the world outside of polar regions. The sculpture was created by Mario Irarr á zabal in the early 1980s and was financed by a local nonprofit organization called Corporaci ó n Pro Antofagasta. The sculpture is not only famous for its size and design but also for the message it expresses. Many people believe that the hand represents the weakness and helplessness of human beings, as well as their strength and determination to overcome hardships.

If you’re interested in visiting the Hand of the Desert, take Route 26 or 28 from Antofagasta, a port city in northern Chile. The sculpture is located between mile markers 1309 and 1310. The desert’s flatness (平坦) makes it easy to spot the sculpture from far away. But some people mistake it for a mirage (海市蜃楼) caused by tiredness from driving a long way to the sculpture.

Visitors should take precautions (预防措施) before leaving , such as filling their gas tanks , taking plenty of water, and wearing sunscreen. They should also avoid driving too quickly, as many car accidents happen in the desert each year.

For those who are worried about driving alone, working with an agency (机构) like Plan South America is a good option. The founder of the agency, Harry Hastings, said that he always tries to join a visit to the sculpture with guests traveling to the desert.

【1】What makes the Hand of the Desert a famous attraction?

    A.Its material.

    B.Its location.

    C.Its designer.

    D.Its size and design.

【2】What can we infer from the third paragraph?

A.The sculpture attracts millions of visitors every year.

B.Tired travelers often see mirages in the desert.

C.The sculpture can be reached very easily.

D.The sculpture can be seen from far away.

【3】What can we know about Harry Hastings from the passage?

A.He built the sculpture “Hand of the Desert”.

B.He gave the financial support to the sculpture.

C.His agency can help lonely travelers travel to the desert.

D.He can avoid driving accidents in the desert.

【4】Which column does this passage belong to in a newspaper?

    A.Travel.

    B.Environment.

    C.Culture.

    D.Entertainment.

  • 24、Lots of people avoid books. They read emails, websites and papers for work, but not books. They are busy, but even if they have time, they would rather relax on their computers or in front of the TV. 【1】 However, I think there are lots of benefits of reading, which screen-based activities don’t have.

【2】 Looking at screens can be very stressful for your eye muscles, and clearly you should avoid looking at screens for an hour before bed to get a good night’s sleep.

【3】 I often forget the time or things around me! Reading is a great way to switch off before you go to bed, because you think more about the world of the book, rather than the real world, so you can truly relax. I know you can be transported to a different world in a film or a TV show, but I think books do it better.

I also enjoy hearing what people are doing and finding out what they think. Reading gives me the chance to get to know hundreds of new people! It also teaches you to see things from other people’s point of view, and understand other people’s decisions or opinions. With a book, you can hear everything a character is thinking or feeling. 【4】

So my challenge for you is this: to read a book for 15 minutes every single day for a month. Take 15 minutes when you are waking up, going to bed, eating lunch, or having a coffee. If you read a lot, why not try 15 minutes of an English book? 【5】 Good luck, and happy reading!

A.One thing I personally love reading, is being transported to another world.

B.If you make it, why not pass the challenge on to someone else?

C.You have a better understanding of the whole world.

D.Everyone is different and has their own interests.

E.You really can be inside someone else’s head!

F.Reading can get rid of your stress.

    G.It’s better for your eyes.

  • 26、阅读下面短文, 根据其内容写一篇 60 词左右的内容概要。

How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments - mostly for entertainment purposes is fair and respectful?

Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain “collections” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats. Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes.

Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals’ natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species’ name, diet, and natural range (分布区). The animals’ normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don’t usually take care of the animals’ natural needs.

The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusual and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis(动物精神病). A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.

Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding(圈养繁殖) of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven’t we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?

Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons why people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals’ natural habitats.
