二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Researchers set out to understand more about the connection between people’s emotions and behavior at bird feeders and how that may impact conservation in a study published in People and Nature.

“We know that bird feeding is popular across the world, but not a lot is known about people who feed birds,” said lead author Ashely Dayer, an assistant professor at Virginia Tech.

In the study, Dayer and her workmates made use of Project Feeder Watch, a citizen science program from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The team sent an email to a subset of the project participants in all U.S. states and asked them questions about observations made at their feeders, how those observations made them feel and any management actions they took.

“Those who fed birds seemed to notice whether the predator(捕食者) near their feeders was a cat, which is non-native, or a hawk(鹰), which is native. They also had different emotional responses to the two. About half the people studied thought hawks were interesting. Cats, on the other hand, tended to cause anger,” said Dayer.

Researchers also determined that people changed their actions after noticing changes at their feeders. People tended to scare off cats, move their feeders or provide shelter for birds when they spotted cats around their feeders. When people saw sick birds, which caused emotions like sadness and worry, they often provided more food.

Another thing they found surprising was the factors that impact people’s decisions about how much to feed birds. “Cold weather mattered more than what’s usually predictive of human behavior—time and money,” Dayer said. Feeding birds when it was colder outside was more important to the participants, which showed their commitment to bird feeding, despite the cost of bird food.

Dayer said the next step would be looking at the impacts of feeders on birds themselves including disease risk and how feeders may influence bird behavior.

“Being able to understand how people decide what to do and what effects these actions have on birds can help answer bird conservation questions and help bird conservation organizations work with people that feed birds to ensure their activity has the most benefit,” Dayer said.

    【1】How was the study conducted?

    A.By observing the participants.

    B.By surveying the participants online.

    C.By interviewing the participants face-to-face,

D.By studying the previous data from Project FeederWatch.

【2】What did the researchers find concerning those who fed birds?

A.They scared off hawks at their feeders.

B.They provided less food for sick birds.

C.They became angry with cats near their feeders.

D.They felt sad when seeing predators attack birds.

【3】What surprised the researchers about the participants?

A.They had great influence over bird behavior.

B.They showed great commitment to bird feeding.

C.They had different responses to cats and hawks.

D.They gave priority to cold weather when feeding birds.

【4】What is the main purpose of the study according to Dayer?

    A.To aid bird conservation.

    B.To promote bird feeding.

C.To analyze ways of feeding birds.

D.To stress the importance of bird feeders.

  • 22、You might think of martial arts movies when you see people performing graceful moves down the river, all standing on a bamboo strip, but actually it is a form of intangible cultural heritage: bamboo drifting.

Over 2,000 years ago, the high-quality wood, nanmu, in Guizhou was in great demand by the royal court more than 2,000 kilometers to the north. With no better transportation, people had to stand on one log to drift down the river. Later, local people began to compete along the way and the game of wood drifting was born. In the Qing Dynasty, wood drifting became bamboo drifting because of bamboo’s lower price. Due to the skills it takes for one to master this act, bamboo drifting was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list this year.

Yang Liu, a 24-year-old inheritor of bamboo drifting, learned it at 7. “Usually, the bamboo under your feet is about 9 meters long, and the bamboo in your hands is about 5 meters. If the length or diameter of the bamboo is not long enough, it will not float. Keeping our feet firmly positioned on the narrow bamboo pole is the key, so we should fight against the current by constantly changing the angle. I lost my balance and fell in the water many times while practicing. Once I fell, I gave it another try until I knew how to handle the most difficult part.” she said.

The love for the ancient skill keeps Yang going. In the past 17 years, she has drifted all year round, in winter cold and summer heat. As hanfu culture has been on the rise, Yang started wearing hanfu while performing, creating a more beautiful feel. In 2020, Yang began to post her videos on social media. “I'm extremely proud to get responses from viewers that bamboo drifting makes the line between what is possible and impossible unclear. It’s my mission to keep it alive and known to more people,” Yang Liu told China Daily.

【2】What is the biggest challenge in bamboo drifting?

    A.Finding the proper bamboo.

B.Holding the bamboo firmly in hands.

    C.Maintaining a fixed angle.

    D.Keeping balance.

【3】What do the viewers think of bamboo drifting?

    A.Unbelievable.

    B.Impossible.

    C.Confusing.

    D.Complicated.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

    A.Transporting Bamboo down the River.

  • 24、   When you look in the mirror, you see yourself. That puts you in the company of animals like dolphins, elephants and chimpanzees. The mirror test is often used as a way of measuring whether animals have self-awareness. And an animal that is aware of itself has a high level of intelligence. Now, a species of fish - the cleaner wrasse - has also spotted its reflection.

Alex Jordan, a biologist at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, is one of the researchers of the study on cleaner wrasse consciousness. He and his team conducted many tests that show the fish does seem to recognize its reflection - when the researchers added a colored mark to its body, the fish would even try to remove the mark upon catching sight of it in the mirror. It seems to indicate the clever fish species has some sense of self or individuality.

But Jordan said, “I’m the last to say that the cleaner wrasse is as smart as chimpanzees.” Instead, he believes that the measure scientists have used for nearly 50 years is imperfect.

One problem with the test, for example, is that it uses vision to measure self-awareness. Yet not all animals rely on sight to recognize themselves. It may well be that a bat, for example, which depends on sonar (声波定位) to get around, is self-conscious. Elephants, while able to pass the mirror test, rely more heavily on smell than on sight.

Consciousness in humans or animals is not easy to measure or understand. Philosophers and scientists have long wrestled with the questions of how a sense of self is assessed, and how it relates to physical processes. Jordan believes the cleaner wrasse is self-cognizant (自我知晓的), but not the same extent (程度) as a human. This means scientists need to reconsider whether some concepts centered on humans can be used in understanding animals.

1The study on the cleaner wrasse made Alex Jordan .

A.doubt whether the mirror test is reliable

B.discover the secret about the fish’s sight

C.develop a better method to replace the mirror test

D.believe the cleaner wrasse is as smart as chimpanzees

2Which of the following can replace the underlined part “wrestled with” ?

    A.Presented with. B.Ended with.

    C.Agreed with. D.Struggled with.

3What can we learn from the text?

A.It is relatively easy to test animals' consciousness.

B.Some concepts for humans can’t be applied to animals.

C.Animals rely on at least two senses to get to know themselves.

D.More mirror tests are needed to prove the cleaner wrasse is self-aware.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

    Fatigue

Fatigue is a feeling of being extremely tired. Basically, there are three types of fatigue, physical, pathological (由疾病引起的), and psychological. As you might suspect, each differs significantly from the others.

When you exercise your body, you produce waste products. Muscles, for example, release lactic acid (乳酸) into the blood; cells dump in carbon dioxide. When these wastes reach a certain level in the blood, the brain is informed and your activity level drops. Excess wastes in the muscles may produce soreness. The solution to this type of fatigue is simple — rest. That should refresh you; if it doesn’t, another cause should be sought.

Have you ever become involved in so many activities that you had to be in two places at once? This is what happens when your body has a disease. The cells are overused and cannot keep up with both fighting the disease and keeping you active. The result is fatigue. Some communicable diseases like the flu and colds are “well” known for draining your energy. Other non-communicable diseases, like anemia (贫血), drain you because you are lacking an important body ingredient. Being overweight can cause pathological fatigue. It should be obvious that this type of fatigue is not going to go away without treatment. In a way, pathological fatigue is a lifesaver. It lets you know something is wrong and that you need rest.

Here is the most common type of fatigue. Almost everybody experiences it now and then. Often, the cause is an emotional war you are having with yourself or those around you. Some of these familiar factors can bring on psychological fatigue: worries, stress, lack of exercise, boredom, depression. If you know someone with psychological fatigue, would you advise him to rest? No way! That might be fine for our other types of fatigue, but for this one, it’s deadly. If you are ever going to be able to cope with stress, depression, or worry, you need oxygen in your cells and a more optimistic attitude. Get out of the chair and do something! Believe it or not, many people throw themselves into physical labor like cleaning to “de-fatigue” themselves. If you find yourself in a particularly stressful situation that you can’t physically escape, escape mentally. When fatigue continues, maybe you need to get to the root of the problem.
