  • 21、Westerners usually don’t think of China as having a rich tradition of making comics, and discussions of Chinese comics focus on manhua, the Chinese comics that were inspired by Japanese manga. It’s true that most of the comics being produced now are manhua. 【1】 From their beginnings in the 1920s until their popularity bottomed out in the 1990s, lianhuanhua were some of the most widely read literature in the country.

Most of the lianhuanhua that can still be found in China were printed in the late 1970s and 1980s. 【2】 The lianhuanhua industry began in Shanghai during the 1920s and 30s. Some scholars even trace the origins to Song Dynasty scrolls(卷轴).

Using newly imported printing techniques, publishers began releasing periodicals (期刊) that contained stories and illustrations. 【3】 There were various regional names, such as “book of little people”. Some of these stories were text accompanied by images while others used speech bubbles or text inserted into the image. The most popular series from the magazines were reprinted in palm-size paperbacks, and before long rental shops sprang up in alleyways throughout the city. 【4】

Many of these early comics were multi-volume(多卷的) adaptations of martial arts epics or folk tales such as the classical Chinese novel, Journey to the West. 【5】 Adaptations of foreign works from Europe and the United States were also produced. In the 1980s, new publications came to have a wider range of goals that included intellectual development and education in science and culture for young people.

A.Their history reaches back much farther.

B.Most people couldn’t afford to rent one to read.

C.For a few coins, readers could sit down and read.

D.Others were adapted from theater shows or popular films such as King Kong.

E.But this was not the case for much of the 20th century.

F.But people could also enjoy foreign movie stories on lianhuanhua.

  • 22、One night before bed, Christine Carter was sitting with her daughter on the sofa. They were making a list: Three Good Things of the Day. 【1】 It’s a technique based in an expanding field of research known as the science of happiness.

Carter is a sociologist at the University of California, Berkeley. She studies how schools and families can develop positive emotions and help children lead healthier lives.

【2】 It means understanding that feeling sad is natural, and that it passes more quickly if we can notice the good things in life. “This is really about mental health,” Carter says. “We can practice bringing happiness to ourselves. It’s like putting money in the bank. 【3】

A key step toward happiness is learning how to describe emotions, even negative ones. Feeling blue? 【4】 Ask yourself: “What do I feel? Where in my body am I feeling it? Does it have a color or shape?”

Expressing gratitude is also important. Let’s say you often quarrel with somebody. Reflect on why you’re grateful for that person, and remember the good times. This makes it likely you’ll get along better tomorrow.

【5】 Helping others gives life purpose, because you are changing the world. Even more, “We feel a sense of connection and love,” she adds. “We are born to feel better in community. Our nervous system feels safe when we’re connected with other people.”

  • 24、Every country has certain cultural patterns making it unique. Of course, habits and customs between cultures and countries tend to overlap(重叠). The popularity of social media, for instance, ignores borders and breaks down cultural differences. Technology has made the world a much smaller and culturally similar place. However, when looking at a foreign country, we will always find differences between our traditions and theirs. Young Italians and young Americans, for example, though alike in many respects, have also some pronounced differences, especially when it comes to work, pastimes and sports.

Most American teens have part-time jobs through high school and college. Youths in Italy tend not to. The reasons behind this are multifaceted. It is, to begin with, rather hard in Italy to find the type of part-time jobs students usually take up. Moreover, there is also a different cultural attitude to take into consideration, especially when thinking of certain parts of Italy. Young Italians like to enjoy life to the full and feel there will be time to work once they become adults, hence the lack of interest in finding odd jobs while still in school. Like the old saying goes, some Italians work to Live, while some Americans often live to work.

In a lot of ways, young Italians and Americans spend their free time in a similar fashion. Listening to music, watching movies, hanging out, practicing sports and surfing the Internet are all common ways to pass some free time. Italians, especially, make a point of going out and being social, often choosing between pizzeria or birrerie (place for pizza or beer), which stay open late. Italians often pile into a couple of cars and go out in a big group. In general, American teens participate in a lot of extracurricular(课外的) activities, many often through school, while Italians may not take part in so many.

When going out, Italian teens tend to meet and gather on the streets of their cities or towns, something not as common in the United States, especially in highly populated areas. This very Italian habit can be linked to the urban arrangement of Italian towns. Many of them date back thousands of years and feature central piazzas(广场) and areas built around historical sites that have now become gathering places for the young. If you’re in Italy, don’t be surprised by the sight of hundreds gathered in a piazza or on the street, laughing and drinking the night away.

【1】The passage is mainly about ________.

A.the unique lifestyles shared by American and Italian teens

B.the relationship between young people of America and Italy

C.some customs and habits of the Americans and Italians

D.some differences in tradition between young Americans and Italians

【2】By saying “some Italians work to live, while some Americans often live to work”, the author most probably wants to tell us that ________.

A.Italians have a better life attitude toward working

B.Americans are more diligent and thus live a better life

C.Americans and Italians both find it hard to locate a satisfying job

D.Italians and Americans have different choices regarding work

【3】According to paragraph 3, which of the following statements is true?

A.American teens practice sports and surf the Internet to pass time.

B.Italian youth take an active part in extracurricular activities.

C.American teens like to drive out and social together in big groups.

D.Italian youth enjoy pizza and beer because they are cheap.

【4】If there is one more paragraph in this passage, what will it most probably be about?

A.The working conditions of the young Americans and Italians.

B.The differences in practicing sports between teens of the two nations.

C.The central piazzas and areas built around historical sites in Italy.

D.The urban arrangement of the highly populated American cities.

I discovered my love for writing while working on my undergraduate degree in English. I fell in love with children's literature and knew that was what I wanted to do with my life: write for children. So I wanted to learn how to write. But life kept me busy, and my dream stopped.

Two decades later, I wanted to sign up for a university's writing program for adults to accept the education of writing. 1 hoped to greatly improve my writing skills and then start my writing journey. So I applied to a university for such a writing program.

But after several days of taking the courses, I found the learning tasks were too heavy in light of my busy family life, so I dropped out of the program.

Over the next few years, I applied to several universities writing programs again. However, still due to the busy family life, I gave up after only a few days of taking the courses. And I knew I would never apply to a school again. I had closed that door.

Two years ago, my husband got a new job, requiring us to move from our home in Texas to Washington, D.C. it wasn't an easy move. The family part was the problem. No one would be moving with us. All our children had grown up. So when we sat down for dinner in our new home-the big, empty and quiet house, only my husband and me, I didn't know how to deal with the quiet life.

One morning, I woke up from a dream. In my dream, I had contacted the last university's writing department, asked to rejoin their writing program for adults, and was allowed. The dream had shaken me. So, before I got out of bed or changed my mind, I picked up my phone and sent an e-mail asking what I would need to do to reapply.
