二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   According to a survey conducted by The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, the monarch butterfly is facing a sharp population decline that could soon lead to its extinction.

The monarch butterfly is considered the "king of all butterflies due to its extreme beauty, hence the name "monarch". The most popular among the North American butterflies, the grand black-and-orange in vertebrate(无脊椎动物) is known for its yearly mass migration of up to 3,000 miles from the Baja California Peninsula to California's Central Coast every winter, beautifully covering all the trees along their path.

In 1980, its population was recorded to be about 4. 5 million and by the mid-2000's, there were barely 100,000 remaining. In 2018, the number of monarch butterflies fell down to only 28,260, which makes a 99. 4 percent decline in 39 years.

"It's mind-boggling. We're now down below 1 percent of the historic population," Says Emma Pelton, a Xerces Society Conservation biologist.

A variety of factors could be involved to cause the monarch butterflies' near extinction. One could have a co-relation to the lessening of other insects such as bees and other bird species. Another factor could be due to a number of human economic activities such as urbanization and illegal logging which lessens the butterflies' habitat, and pesticides widely used on corn and soybean crops.

Because of these chains of events, an "extinction  vortex(旋风)” has occurred where the process of  extinction would be near unstoppable since the species won't be able to reproduce and raise their numbers the natural way.

The mass disappearance of the monarch butterfly and other endangered species is a wake up call of our little time remaining to positively shift the direction of the ecological environment for a massive improvement in the near future, in order to help mother nature and all the other living species in this earth.

【1】What is the monarch butterfly noted for?

    A.Its extreme beauty as king.

    B.Its special name with monarch.

    C.Its manner of reproduction.

    D.Its regular large-scale migration.

【2】How many monarch butterflies disappear yearly?

    A.About 20,000.

    B.About 150,000.

    C.About 114,660.

    D.About 44,550.

【3】Which factor may cause the monarch butterfly's near extinction?

    A.The growth of cities.

    B.The popularity of other insects.

    C.The cleaning of lakes.

    D.Less crops such as soybean.

【4】What is the purpose of the passage?

A.To inform us of something about butterflies.

B.To appeal to us to protect the ecological environment.

C.To analyze why monarch butterflies have gone extinct.

D.To attract visitors to California's Central Coast.

  • 23、Doctors at the University of California, San Francisco, in the US, have developed a piece of software that can read minds. The project, supported by Facebook, hopes to help people who, because of medical conditions, are unable to communicate with others.

Until now, technologies that have helped speech-impaired (语言障碍) people communicate have been too slow to allow a natural conversation. People find these things upsetting to use. This new way uses brain signals to change a person’s thoughts into text. When we want to speak, the brain sends signals to make the lips, jaw and tongue move in the right way to make an understandable sound. By discovering these brain signals, the new software is able to predict what a person want to say quickly enough to hold a conversation.

The brain-reading software was tested on three volunteers who could all speak like healthy people. They were being treated for epilepsy (癫痫). As part of their treatment for epilepsy, each patient had electrodes(电极) placed on to their brain. Edward Chang, whole d the study, used these electrodes to record the signals in the patients’ brains while they listened to a list of questions and answered them.

Chang and his team then built a computer program that learned to match the patients’ brain signals to the words the patients heard and the words the patients spoke. For the questions, the software matched the correct words 76%of the time. For the answers, it matched the correct words 61%of the time.

Now, the mind-reading software works only for the limited set of sentences on which it was trained. Scientists hope that this early system will help them develop a more powerful one that could understand thoughts in real time to give people their voices back. Chang said, “We as scientists should try our best to help people to bring that most important and basic human ability back.”

【1】What is the disadvantage of previous technologies?

    A.They couldn’t read people’s minds correctly.

    B.They couldn’t make communication understandable.

C.They couldn’t serve the purpose of natural conversation.

D.They couldn’t let medical conditions change for the better.

【2】How does the software help people?

A.By changing people’s mind into text.

B.By sending signals to their lips.

    C.By organizing conversations for them.

D.By training them how to speak.

【3】What can we know about the mind-reading software according to the last paragraph?

A.It has been used on a wide scale.

B.It has restored the basic human ability.

C.It still has plenty of room for improvement.

D.It has enhanced human real-time conversation.

【4】What is the attitude of the author towards the mind-reading software?

    A.Favorable.

    B.Objective.

    C.Intolerant.

    D.Doubtful.

  • 24、An island spider decides which of its three kinds of webs to make depending on the location. Spiders usually make only one kind of web, but the Wendilgarda galapagensis species-found only on Cocos Island, off the western coast of Central America—can make three different webs.

High above ground it makes “aerial” webs attached to nearby stems and leaves. Nearer to the ground it makes “land” webs with long horizontal strands (缕) secured to branches and with vertical strands fixed to the ground. Finally, over pools it makes “water” webs that are a bit like the land webs, but with the vertical strands attached to the water surface itself.

Darko Cotoras at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco wondered whether this flexibility indicates that the spider is undergoing speciation (物种形成), branching into three species, each with unique behaviours and exploiting a different food source. So with his colleagues he ran genetic analyses on 142 of the spiders.

To their surprise, the results suggested they all belonged to the same species. This means they haven’t genetically diversified since they arrived at the volcanic island up to 2 million years ago.

The researchers then marked the 2-millimetre-long spiders and moved them to different locations on the island to track their behaviour. For example, they took water-web-making spiders away from water sources and placed them in high bushes nearby. Again, the researchers were surprised to see that the spiders often built a new web with the architecture suited to the new location.

“They show an unusually wide variety in habitat choice, web design, and construction behavior.” Cotoras says, “This flexibility probably helps these animals live on such a small, remote island.”

【1】What can we learn from the text?

A.Cocos Island spiders can only live on remote islands.

B.Cocos Island spiders came into being two million years ago.

C.Cocos Island spiders have branched into three different species.

D.Cocos Island spiders make diverse webs according to the environment.

【2】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.A Master of Different Webs

【3】Where is the text most probably from?

    C.An academic paper.

    D.A science magazine.
