二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A YOUNG girl raises her hand in class to answer the teacher’s question. She proudly gives the correct answer when her classmates start to giggle . Among them, she hears somebody call her a “know-it-all” and sees another roll his eyes. She doesn’t dare to speak up again because confident women are often called“ “bossy”.

Despite decades of advances, it seems that women continue to face prejudice when it comes to holding a position of power.

Laila Farah, an associate professor at DePaul University in Chicago in the US, said the reason for this stereotype lies in history.

“This is an old phenomenon which reflects the fact that many people think females don’t have the same brain capability compared to the male brain,” Farah said.

What’s more, the prejudice is so deep in our society that it has become hard to ignore. “Gender bias is found in the media, schools, the workplace-basically everywhere,” Farah said. “It is learned in infancy and goes from toys chosen to assuming females aren’t good at math.”

Another reason for confident women being called bossy is that “some people aren’t used to women being confident enough to speak their minds”, said high school junior Jessica Bella from Illinois. Embarrassing women by calling them “bossy” has caused some of them to tone down their confidence.

In a study done by the Girls Leadership Institute, a program that helps girls develop strong leadership skills, many girls said the biggest thing holding them back from participating in class was being judged.

“Sometimes, I know I have the right answer in class, but I don’t raise my hand because I don’t want to be annoying, ” said high school junior Emily Grigg from Illinois.

Still, some women have bravely stood up against this stereotype.

“If women in leadership positions are considered to be bossy, then I like to do all I can to prove that wrong. We all have an equal opportunity to present our knowledge no matter how that may come across, ”said Christina Jakubas, an English teacher from Illinois.

Maybe what we need to do is turn being bossy into something empowering for women. After all, bossy people get the job done.

【1】Why does the author write about the experience of a girl raising her hand in class?

A.prove that confident women tend to be bossy

B.explain why bossy women are unpopular in groups

C.explore what stops women from being themselves

D.show how women should fight against gender bias

【2】What do the underlined words ”this stereotype“ in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A.Females failing to do as well as males in math.

B.Gender bias becoming hard to ignore in society.

C.Women who hold a position of power facing prejudice.

D.Females not having the same brain capabilities as males.

【3】Which of the following would the author probably agree with according to the article?

A.Confident women tend to possess strong leadership skills.

B.Bossy women usually get their jobs done better than men.

C.Females in leadership positions should try to avoid being bossy,

D.Females should ignore negative comments and bravely speak their minds

【4】In which part of the magazine can we read the passage?

    A.Health

    B.Society

    D.Entertainment

  • 22、In the past, friendships were greatly limited by time, space and attention; increasing home and workplace mobility has made it even harder to keep social relations over time. Through a combination of user controls, new technologies and changing standards of social behavior, Facebook is freeing us from these limitations, making friendships more accessible, pleasant and diverse than ever before.

First, Facebook allows you to find and rediscover friends and then reminds you of these connections, so that you are less likely to fall out of touch with the long-lost school friend, or the family member in a different country. 'Second, Facebook creates an environment that allows you to interact easily with others you can share your photos, videos, links and thoughts with your friends, and respond to what they share in turn. Third, Facebook’s unique technical system helps you to discover your friends, most valuable stories. These technologies allow people to keep and enrich friendships that they might otherwise have been unable to keep.

The effect of this is very great. A recent study by Keith Hampton for the Pew Internet and American Life Project discovered that users of social networking websites have larger, more diverse social circles, online and offline. This outcome comes at no cost to one’s closest relationships, which are kept in person and over the phone. Instead, the hour that the average user spends each day socializing on Facebook comes at the expense of less social activities, such as the three or so hours a day the average person spends watching television.

Time may limit our ability to keep social ties, but our desire for social communication is limitless. Just as boats have allowed us to cross oceans and vehicles have allowed us to move mountains, Facebook is a tool that allows us to stay more deeply connected with a larger and more diverse set of friends.

【1】 What can you do with the help of Facebook according to the text?

    A. Protect the environment.

    B. Find a new house or workplace.

    C. Rediscover long-lost classmates.

    D. Change the behavior towards your friends.

2What will social networking websites do?

    A. Increase the diversity of social relations.

    B. Share the hours of watching television.

    C. Restrict personal friendship.

    D. Limit social activities.

3What is the author's attitude towards Facebook?

    A. Worried. B. Doubtful. C. Approving. D. Curious.

  • 23、   It has been a year since I first saw UBTech’s Walker robot at CES 2019. I was blown away by its ability to perform many tasks.

A year later, it had come a long way, gaining much better motor skills and the ability to maintain balance. During a CES 2020 demo, UBTech showed how far Walker had come. The robot walked over to a table, picked up a bottle opener and used it to remove the cap from a bottle of soda. It picked up the bottle and a glass and poured the liquid in, without spilling. During the demo, Walker also performed a number of serious Yoga poses, including standing on one foot and leaning back.

UBTech said that the ability to pour drinks required visual servo technology using its cameras to judge the position of objects. The same methods allowed Walker to uncap a marker and draw a picture of a flower on a piece of paper at another point in the demo.

All of the betterment was made via software as UBTech hasn’t made any physical adjustments to the robot since we saw it last year. On the inside, the robot uses a combination of a few different operating systems on these internal PCs, including Ubuntu, ROS and Android. Its battery promises up to 2 hours battery life after a 2-hour charge time.

UBTech continues development on this pioneering robot, but doesn’t have public launch date. The company is targeting Walker toward the home, with an emphasis on helping seniors or just doing house cleaning. To make it stable enough to adapt to all these different conditions is a huge challenge. However, if development of Walker continues, this robot could eventually be a game-changer.

1How did the author feel when first seeing the robot?

    A.Amazed. B.Proud.

    C.Awkward. D.Disappointed.

2What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A.The demos of CES 2019. B.The improvements of the robot.

C.The robot’s motor ability. D.The robot’s ability to remain steady.

3What enables the robot to draw pictures?

A.The cap of the marker. B.The ability to pour drinks.

C.The using of more cameras. D.The system of position judging.

4What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.The robot is stable enough to help the old.

B.The robot has been available to the public.

C.Our life could be greatly influenced by the robot.

D.The basic concept of robot making will be changed.
