二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Some people are so rude!

Who sends an e-mail or a text message that just says “Thank you”? Who leaves a voice mail message rather than texts you? Who asks for a fact easily found on Google? Don’t these people realize that they’re wasting your time?

Maybe I’m the rude one for not appreciating life’s little politeness. But many social agreed standards just don’t make sense to people drowning in digital communication.

In texts, you don’t have to declare who you are or even say hello; E-mail, too, is slower than a text; Voice mail is a now impolite way of trying to connect.

My father learned this lesson after leaving me a dozen voice mail messages, none of which I listened to. Exasperated, he called my sister to express his dissatisfaction that I never returned his phone calls. “Why are you leaving him voice mails?” my sister asked. “Just text him.”

In the age of the smartphone, there is no reason to ask once-acceptable questions about: the weather forecast, a business’ phone number, or directions to a house, a restaurant, which can be easily found on Google Maps. But people still ask these things. And when you answer, they respond with a thank-you e-mail.

How to handle these differing standards? Easy: Consider your audience. Some people, especially older ones, appreciate a thank-you message. Others, like me, want no reply.

The anthropologist(人类学家) Margaret Mead once said that in traditional societies, the young learn from the old. But in modern societies, the old can also learn from the young. Here’s hoping that politeness never goes out of fashion but that time-wasting forms of communication do.

1Why didn’t the author listen to his father’s voice mail messages?

A.He thought voice mail would waste his time.

B.He thought voice mail was an impolite way of trying to connect.

C.He thought voice mail was an important way of communication.

D.He thought his father left him too many voice mails.

2What seems to be the author’s attitude toward texts?

    A.Favorable. B.Doubtful.

    C.Reserved. D.Disapproving.

3What does the author suggest modern people do in communication?

    A.Learn from the old generation.

    B.Ask once-acceptable questions.

    C.Respond with a thank-you email.

    D.Consider their audience.

  • 22、With a full career in both politics and business, Hiram Fong never set out to develop one of Oahu’s most impressive horticulture (园艺) attractions. Fong, whose political career lasted over thirty years, was one of the first two senators (参议员) from Hawaii when it became a state in 1959 and the first Asian American to serve in the US Senate. Before working in politics, Fong paid his own way through Harvard Law School and, upon graduating helped found and run a law firm. Fong eventually led several companies, all the while, gardening was his escape.

In 1950, Fong purchased more than 700 acres of land on Oahu, above Kaneohe Bay. Wanting to experiment with growing fruit, he planted banana, then papaya, lemon, jackfruit, and avocado. By also choosing to plant crops such as bamboo, coconut, betel nut, and turmeric, he broadened the types of plants in his garden and developed a landscape reminding people of Hawaii hundreds of years ago.

After he retired from politics in 1977, Fong continued to be in charge of his companies, but he focused on gardening, personally importing and planting countless species of plants. Eventually, he divided his land into five gardens, each one named after a US president who had served while Fong was a senator. The Eisenhower Plateau is dedicated to native Chinese plants, such as the Hong Kong orchid tree and the Java plum. The Johnson Plateau features foreign fruits. Kennedy Valley supports ginger and palms from all over the world. Nixon Valley abounds with flowers while the Ford Plateau highlights hillsides of pili grasses.

The preserve is now named Senator Fong’s Plantation and Gardens, complete with a visitors’ center and guided tours. Until his death in 2004 at ninety-seven. • 23、A four-year-old boy discovers that compassion (同情) for the 1ess fortunate can produce amazing results. Our hero’ s origin story started this past February. Austin and his father, TJ Perine, went to the Firehouse Ministries, a local shelter that provides housing, food, and other services for homeless men. As they drove by the redbrick building, they saw a group of 25 homeless men standing on the street corner. “Dad, they look sad,” Austin said. “Can we take them some food and make them smile?”

That day, Austin used his allowance to buy each man a Burger King sandwich and handed the food out himself. Seeing what their presence meant to the men at the ministry, Austin and TJ returned the next week. Austin again dipped into his piggy bank to buy sandwiches, which he banded out along with his new catchphrase, “Don’t forget to show love?”

After he returned every week for five weeks, word of Austin’s acts of kindness spread through social media and national news outlets. Burger King jumped aboard, agreeing to donate $1,000 a month for an entire year toward the cause. Soon, churches and shelters across the country began inviting Austin to come distribute food in other poverty-prone areas. Whereas before Austin and TJ could feed 25 to 50 people at a time, now, thanks to corporate and community support, they can feed 800 to 2,000 people at once.

Austin’s passion has now become his family’s calling. His mother Audrey established the Show Love Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting homelessness. She now serves as president, and TJ left his job to oversee public relations for the foundation full time. He’s in talks with the city of Birmingham to secure the redbrick building where it all started—Firehouse Ministries is moving- -as the site of their own shelter, which will offer medical and mental care as preventive steps against homelessness.

As for Austin, he continues to give out food, smiles, and his inspirational message of love. “It makes me feel like I’m saving the day.”

【1】What did Austin do with his pocket money?

    A.Travel across the country.

B.Build a shelter for the poor.

C.Improve the life of his family.

D.Buy some food for the homeless.

【2】Why did the author mention Burger King in paragraph 3?

A.To make an advertisement for it.

B.To show the effect of Austin’s act.

C.To praise its kindness and support.

D.To seek its help for the less fortunate.

【3】What can we learn about the Show Love Foundation?

    A.It is highly profitable.

B.It was set up by Austin.

    C.It will provide health care.

    D.It’s funded by the government.

【4】Which word can best describe Austin and his parents?

    D.Quick-minded.

  • 24、Many people volunteer their time and energy to help others. There are different ways to meet other people's needs. Some provide education while others offer adventure. Many do both. And one typical group to be introduced today are history lovers.

Every year, they offer to find or document remains of lost societies and communities. These efforts take place across the world. For example, Forest Service experts and volunteers are working in the San Gabriel Mountains of southern California, looking for information about prehistoric and historic settlements of native Californians.

This kind of work interests Professor Steven Ortiz in Fort Worth, Texas. Every other year, he leads an archaeological dig (考古挖掘) in Israel. The dig is at Tel Gezer, halfway between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Professor Ortiz directs the activities at Tel Gezer with Samuel Wolff, an Israeli archaeologist.

The city is linked to King Solomon, who appears in the writings of different religions. The experts, students and volunteers are hoping to learn more about the ancient city of Gezer Volunteers for the digs must be eighteen, although children may take part if they are with a parent. The youngest volunteer on the team is Steven Ortiz's ten-year-old son.

Volunteers must pay for their transportation and they will face many challenges. The work takes time, patience and often muscle strength. Besides, the ground may be hard and the sun may be hot. But why do people pay to volunteer to work? “For some, the dig is a journey undertaken for religious purposes. Some just value ancient history, and they want to be a part of uncovering it.

I tend to think we attract people who think they want a cross-cultural experience. They want to do something meaningful. They want to get their hands dirty. And they want to have a fun experience touring a foreign country." said Steven.

Volunteering for the archaeological dig provides all those things, and more. “You are helping science. You are helping history. But on weekends, especially for small children, they can have fun, travel in the country and see sights they do not normally see." Steven added.

【1】What can be inferred about the archaeological dig in Israel?

A.It aims to seek for historic settlements of native Californians.

B.Children can join in the dig without parents' company.

C.The dig is a challenging but meaningful journey.

D.Participants of the dig enjoy free transportation.

【2】Why does the author write the passage?

A.To introduce the volunteer work of history lovers.

    B.To describe children's cross-cultural experiences.

C.To analyze the significance of archaeological digs.

D.To stress experts' efforts in archaeological research.

    【3】What is the text?

    A.A book review.

    B.A news program.

    C.A research paper.

    D.An investigation report.
