21、New methods have allowed researchers and scientists to find a way to reduce heat from buildings by about 30%. This new “green” solution is quite literally green as it involves fitting a living wall, according to a new research.
To see what effects renewing a living wall on an existing building using fabric and pockets to stick soil and plants onto the walls would have on the environment, the scientists decided to test it out on a building at a university in the UK, which was originally built in the 1970’s. As a control, part of the building was not fitted with the living wall. Both of the parts of the building were west-facing and the test was conducted over 5 weeks. What was found was that the part with the living wall lost 31.4% less heat as compared to the side without it. It also had a more stable temperature as the day progressed, so it took less energy to heat.
In the UK, approximately 57% buildings were built before 1964. They have caused 17% of greenhouse emission (排放), about 60% of which comes from space heating. If people could reduce heat loss from older buildings by 30%, a huge part of that could be removed, while regulations have changed more recently to improve the thermal performance of new constructions, it is the existing buildings that require the most energy to heat and are a significant contributor to carbon emissions. It is, therefore, essential that people begin to improve the thermal performance of these existing buildings if the UK is to reach its target of net zero carbon emission by 2050, and help to reduce the possibility of fuel poverty (贫困) from rising energy prices.
The new research suggests living walls can also provide significant energy savings to help reduce the carbon footprint of existing buildings. Perfecting these living wall systems, however, is now needed to help increase the environmental benefits and reduce some of the sustainability costs.
【1】What did the researchers find about the living wall in the test?
A.It protected the building well.
B.It reduced the waste of some fuels.
C.It reduced the heat loss of the building.
D.It made the building more comfortable.
【2】What measure should the UK take to reach its target of carbon emission?
A.Pulling down the older buildings.
B.Controlling the rising prices of fuels.
C.Adding more living walls on new buildings.
D.Reducing the fuel consumed by the older buildings.
【3】What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The disadvantages of old buildings.
B.The contributors to greenhouse emission.
C.The methods of reducing energy consumption.
D.The importance of reducing heat loss from buildings.
【4】What do we know about living walls from the text?
A.They remain to be improved to fimction perfectly.
B.They are aimed to reduce the energy price in the UK.
C.They become the most effective way to save energy.
D.They reduce 17% of greenhouse emissions in the UK.
22、Maybe you’ve wondered what you would hear if plants could speak. A stream of gossip from the roses? Wise whispering from the branches of an old tree? A faint, high-pitched cry of terror when your older brother takes out the lawn mower(割草机)?
Ariel Novoplansky, an ecologist in Israel, is studying how plants communicate with each other. To listen in, he set up a kind of telephone game among plants in his lab. Experiment used pea plants standing in rows of containers. The center plant in each row was the target: Scientists would stress out that plant and see whether the plants on either side of it picked up any alarm signals.
The pea plants had been grown with two main roots. On one side of the stressed plant, each plant had one root in its own pot and the other reaching into a neighbor’s pot. The central plant connected to its closest neighbor, which connected to another neighbor, and so on down the line. On the other side of the stressed plant, all the plants kept their roots in their own pots unconnected to their neighbors. Then the scientists dried up the soil of the central target plant, creating a drought.
Within 15 minutes, the dried-out plant reacted the same way it would in nature: it had closed up the tiny pores(气孔) on its leaves to save water. What’s amazing is that the central plant’s closest neighbor with connected roots had also closed up its leaf pores. And after an hour, the message had traveled down the whole row of connected plants. On the other side of the pea chain, where the plants’ roots weren’t connected, all their pores stayed open. This means the warning signal traveled from the stressed plant’s roots through the soil.
Dried-out roots aren’t the only talkative plant parts scientists have discovered. When sugar maple trees are damaged, they send signals through the air telling their neighbors to produce bad-tasting chemicals. When caterpillars chew on corn leaves, nearby corn plants also make more self-defense molecules(分子). The plants around us may not be speaking with any volume, but they are saying plenty.
【1】What is the purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To make a prediction.
B.To raise a discussion.
C.To develop a theory.
D.To introduce a research.
【2】How did Novoplansky conduct his experiment?
A.By stressing out the target plant.
B.By sending alarming signals to plants.
C.By growing pea plants with different roots.
D.By drying out the soil of the plants in rows.
【3】What do we know about the pea plants according to the text?
A.They are able to communicate with the gardeners.
B.They send warning signals to others through the air.
C.They close up their leaf pores as a stress reaction.
D.They are the most talkative plants found by scientists.
【4】Where is this text probably taken from?
A.A news report.
B.A science journal.
C.A gardening guide.
D.A business magazine.
23、Dear Mr. Watson
CLAIM AL54323432 — STORM DAMAGE TO ROOF
I received a cheque for $623 dated 26 January in payment of my recent claim. However, I wish to tell you how upset I have been by the way your Claims Assessor Mr. Michael Tan handled this claim.
When Mr. Tan first called me, he specifically told me that he believed I had been overcharged, and he would expect to pay that price for work on a double garage, rather than a single garage like mine. Mr. Tan suggested that I neither use nor recommend this contractor again. He continued to tell me it was unlikely for me to receive full payment. Never during this conversation did he mention that the reason for not receiving full payment was because of the nature of my insurance policy.
Consequently, I wrote to Mr. Lance Ashe to complain about his pricing, stating that I was very upset thinking that he could have taken advantage by overcharging a 73-year-old woman. Mr. Ashe telephoned me immediately and explained his charges in detail. He later reported back to me that Mr. Tan explained that I would not receive full payment because of the type of policy I hold which does not cover wear and tear. This was the first time this issue had been brought to my attention, so you can imagine my surprise.
When I received Mr. Tan's letter of 2 February, this situation was explained. If this had been explained in the first place I would have accepted it and would not have questioned Mr. Ashe’s charges. Instead, by telling me initially that I had been overcharged for this work, he caused a great deal of upset, not only for me but also for Mr. Ashe.
I believed this claim was handled badly by Mr. Tan from the beginning. Therefore, a great deal of embarrassment has been caused over this issue.
I felt you should know how disappointed and upset I am. I trust you will look into this and ensure that such claims are handled more appropriately in the future.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs. Richard

24、In March 2020, when I stood alone in the middle of the main road to the Lake District, it felt like the end of the world. As a local farmer, I’ve grown used to the heavy traffic. But suddenly, everything changed. The lockdown brought quietness to the area, and I did feel a sense of relief to be done with the noise for a while.
Just off the main road is Matterdale, where I live with my family. We own a farm and our work focuses on tending farm animals. Like many who live in tourist attractions, we have been annoyed by some visitors. My farming would have been significantly easier without people parking in gateways, walking through the fields of lambs with loose dogs scaring them, or abandoning their tents along the river.
Despite my complaints, however, I would never reject visitors’ presence. I do understand their need for rest after months of urban life. In fact, I think I need them too. Of course, communities like ours rely on the income that tourism creates. But to me, there is something more personal. I once took my kids to the lake. Near the shore, we saw boys and girls playing together. A young dad was holding his kid’s hand as she tiptoed through the shallows. An elderly couple were sitting in the shade, admiring the view. I found myself content knowing that I was sharing this landscape with others.
As lockdown restrictions have relaxed and visitors started to come back, I wonder how we can coexist happily. For those who are reading this, I hope that my words can encourage you to respect the communities you visit, and understand the responsibilities that come with visiting those places. Our love can coexist, even if it sometimes makes life a little crowded.

26、阅读下面材料.根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Once upon a time, two brothers, who lived on adjoining(毗邻的)farms, fell into conflict. It was the first serious fight in 10 years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labour and goods as needed without a hitch.
Then the long cooperation fell apart. 11 began with a small misunderstanding and it grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence.
Very early one morning there was a knock on the older brother's door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter's toolbox. " I'm looking for a few days' work,“ he said. "Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there. Could I help you?"
"Well as it happens there is." said the older brother.
“1 do have a job for you. Look across the stream at that farm. That’s my neighbour. In fact, it's my younger brother. Once there was a meadow(草地)between us and last week he took his bulldozer(推土机)and plowed a stream between us. Well, he may have done this to hurt me, but I'll go one better than that. See that pile of wood by the barn? I want you to build me a fence. a 2-metre-high fence, so I won't need to see him or his place anymore. "
The carpenter said, "I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails and the post-hole digger and I'll be able to do a job that pleases you.
