二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   We are not who we think we are.

The American self-image is spread with the golden glow of opportunity. We think of the United States as a land of unlimited possibility, not so much a classless society but as a place where class is mutable—a place where brains, energy and ambition are what count, not the circumstances of one’s birth.

The Economic Mobility Project, an ambitious research led by Pew Charitable Trusts, looked at the economic fortunes of a large group of families over time, comparing the income of parents in the late 1960s with the income of their children in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Here is the finding: The “rags to riches” story is much more common in Hollywood than on Main Street. Only 6 percent of children born to parents with family income at the very bottom move to the top.

That is right, just 6 percent of children born to parents who ranked in the bottom of the study sample, in terms of income, were able to bootstrap their way into the top. Meanwhile, an incredible 42 percent of children born into that lowest are still stuck at the bottom, having been unable to climb a single rung of the income ladder.

It is noted that even in Britain—a nation we think of as burdened with a hidebound (守旧的) class system—children who are born poor have a better chance of moving up. When the studies were released, most reporters focused on the finding that African-Americans born to middle-class or upper middle-class families are earning slightly less, in inflation-adjusted dollars, than did their parents.

One of the studies indicates, in fact, that most of the financial gains white families have made in the past three decades can be attributed to the entry of white women into the labor force. This is much less true for African-Americans.

The picture that emerges from all the correlations and percentages is of a nation in which, over all, “the current generation of adults is better off than the previous one”, as one of the studies notes.

The median income of the families in the sample group was $55,600 in the late 1960s; their children’s median family income was measured at $71,900. However, this rising ride has not lifted all boats equally. The rich have seen far greater income gains than the poor.

Even more troubling is that our nation of America as the land of opportunity gets little supper: from the data. Americans move fairly easily up and down the middle rungs of the ladder, but there is “stickiness at the end”—four out of ten children who are born poor will remain poor, and four out of ten who are born rich will stay rich.

【1】What did the Economic Mobility Project find in its research?

A.Children from low-income families are unable to bootstrap their way to the top.

B.Hollywood actors and actresses are upwardly mobile from rags to riches.

C.The rags to riches story is more fiction than reality.

D.The rags to riches story is only true for a small minority of whites.

【2】It can be inferred from the writer that America, as a classless society, should ________.

A.perfect its self-image as a land of opportunity

B.have a higher level of upward mobility than Britain

C.enable African-Americans to have exclusive access to well-paid employment

D.encourage the current generation to work as hard as the previous generation

【3】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.The US is a land where brains, energy and ambition are what count.

B.Inequality persists between whites and blacks in financial gains.

C.Middle-class families earn slightly less with inflation considered.

D.Children in lowest-income families manage to climb a single rung of the ladder.

【4】What might be the best title for this passage?

    A.Social Upward Mobility in America

    B.Incredible Income Gains in America

    C.America: Land of Unequal Wealth

D.America: Not Land of Opportunity for all

  • 22、The goings-on in the consulting room have become more transparent(透明的)recently. Thank goodness. We know more than the lines supplied by the movies in which the therapist knows all and gives wisdom to those who, sitting on a couch, consult with them. Therapists are interested in how the individual, the couple or the family experiences and understands their difficulties. That has to be a starting place. We can be of value if our first port of call is to listen, to gradually feel ourselves into the shoes of the other, to absorb the feelings that are being conveyed and to think and then to say some words.

The thinking and talking that I do inside the consulting room is at odds with many features of ordinary conversation. Not that it is mysterious, but it isn't concerned with traditional ways of sharing or identifying. The therapist makes patterns and theories, but they are also reflecting on the words that are spoken, how they are delivered and how the words, once spoken, affect the speaker and the therapist themselves.

Words can give voice to previously unknown feelings and thoughts. That’s why it’s called the talking cure. But just as words reveal so, too, can they obscure, and this gets us to the listening and feeling part of the therapy. Whatever and however the words are delivered, they will have an impact on me as a therapist. I might feel hopeless, I might feel energized, I might feel pushed away, I might feel demanded of, I might feel pulled to find solutions.

The influence of the other is what makes any relationship possible or impossible. A therapist is trained to reflect on how those who consult with them affect them. As I try to step into the shoes of the other and then out again, my effort is to hold both those experiences, plus an awareness of my ease or discomfort with what I encounter in the relationship.

Feelings are the bread and butter of our work in the consulting room. They inform or modify our ideas and they enable us to find an emotional bridge to what can so hurt for the people we are working with. Along with the more commonly thought-about theories and ideas we have about the psyche, they are an essential part of the therapist's   toolkit, certainly for me. The talking cure means talking, yes. It also means the therapist is listening, thinking and feeling.

【1】In which way is the thinking and talking the writer does different from ordinary conversation?

A.It may not be understood by patients.

B.It is full of terms used by most therapists.

C.It is a good reflection of traditional talking.

D.It involves thinking about how people speak.

【2】The word" obscure"(paragraph 3) is closest in meaning to________.

    A.cancel

    B.clarify

    C.confirm

    D.conceal

【3】Which of the following is the writer most likely to agree with?

A.Patients' influence has been neglected by therapists for too long a time.

B.Therapists need to think from their own perspectives as well as patients'.

C.It is no easy job for therapists to realize how uncomfortable their patients are.

D.Therapists had better push away those negative emotions acquired from patients.

【4】Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

    A.Awareness of feelings

    B.It’s good to talk—and listen

    C.Theories that help therapists

D.What is the point of being a therapist

Scholarship Application Tips in 2018 for college students

    • Before you apply

Work hard to get good grades. Don’t sweat about one bad grade, but always strive to do your best.

Get involved, and stay involved, in out-of-class activities. Sports, clubs, drama, bands and orchestras — these often count toward a student’s overall scholarship application evaluation. The same goes for paid (or unpaid) work experience.

Begin your scholarship research early — by your sophomore or junior year of high school, if possible. Make special note of application deadlines, as they can vary from late summer to late spring.

Apply for as many scholarships as you are eligible for — several smaller scholarships can add up to a lot of money.

    • During the application process

Read the supplementary materials that come with scholarship application forms to better understand the program’s focus (community service, subject interest). Try to answer the questions with the focus area in mind.

Answer questions as they are asked. Don’t go off topic.

If there is a financial section to the application, make sure you get accurate and complete information from all appropriate sources to ensure your eligibility.

Take your time. Write down everything you can think of for each question, then set the application aside for a day so you can look everything over again before you send it off.

Don’t wait until the last minute to complete your application, especially if you are applying online. Computer systems can get blocked with the large volume of applicants hoping to submit their qualifications during the last few days and hours before a deadline.

If a third party has to complete part of your application, such as providing a letter of recommendation, make sure you ask them early on and remind them as often as necessary to ensure they provide you with the necessary materials.

Last but not least, review your application with your parents to make sure you haven’t left out any important details.

Good luck to the students applying for the 2018 scholarship programs!

1Before you apply for a scholarship, it’s best to ______.

    A. pay more attention to grades than to out-of-class activities

    B. focus on only one scholarship application

    C. get as much work experience as possible

    D. begin your preparation as early as possible

2When you are answering questions on the application form, you should ______.

    A. focus on the subject you are interested in

    B. answer to the point

    C. list your advantages

    D. prove your abilities

3The author suggests that applicants should ______.

    A. submit the application in the last few days

    B. double-check their application with their parents

    C. complete and submit the application in one day

    D. avoid submitting the application online

  • 24、Deepfake technology is now a threat to everyone

Last October, MIT Prof. Sinan Aral warned his Twitter followers that he had discovered a video of himself that he hadn’t recorded supporting an investment fund’s stock-trading algorithm (算法). In reality, it wasn’t Prof. Aral in the video, but an artificial-intelligence creation in his likeness, or what is known as a highly persuasive “deepfake.”

It is striking that scammers (诈骗犯) targeted Prof. Aral, considering he is a leading expert on the study of misinformation online. 【1】 Thanks to a number of free deepfake apps that are just a click away, anyone can become a victim of such a scam.

The term deepfake has come to mean the use of AI to create fake media in which someone appears to be doing or saying what in reality they haven’t done or said. 【2】 But positive use cases are likely to be overshadowed in coming years by the technology’s potential role in financial scam, identity theft, etc.

Another big challenge is that in an online world where people can upload content of unknown names, it can be difficult to find the individuals behind deepfakes. 【3】

One such solution is to detect deepfakes through machine-learning methods. While these detectors can be successful in the short term, people looking to avoid such systems will likely just respond with better technology, creating a continuing and expensive cat-and-mouse game. 【4】 While lawmaking eventually may offer protection against deepfakes, I believe the market could be quicker — provided we, as consumers and citizens, care.

    A.The technology isn’t always misused.

B.It also suggests that deepfake technology is now at a turning point.

C.The technology is moving so fast that lawmakers will likely always fall behind.

D.That is why I believe we are going to have to rely on technology to protect us from a problem it helped create.

E.A better approach with a longer time horizon is media provenance systems to confirm the origins of images and videos.

F.To be effective in practice, such systems would have to be widely adopted by all content creators, which will take time.
