二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   It was the homecoming parade in Rockwall, Texas, and cheerleader Tyra Winters was riding on one of the school’s floats (彩车). As it slowly made its way down the avenue, the 17-year-old enthusiastically waved at the crowd, all the while absorbed in the music, laughter, and applause.

Suddenly, a terrible scream came from the cheering crowd. Looking down, Winters saw a two-year-old on the sidewalk gasping for air and his mother desperately begging for help. The boy had been enjoying a piece of candy when it slid down the back of his mouth, sticking in his throat and blocking his windpipe (气管).

“I saw a little bright red face and his mom’s begging for help,” Winters told KTVT.

“There was no coughing; there was no breathing,” the mother, Nicole Hornback, later told news station NBCDFW. “He was just gasping for air. ” No one seemed to know how to help.

Except for Winters. A senior with dreams of becoming a doctor, she had learned the first-aid method of Heimlich maneuver and CPR. Knowing that the clock was ticking, she jumped off the moving float and ran to the child. By the time she got to him, his face had turned purple. “I got him!” she yelled to Nicole as she grabbed the boy from her. “I held him face down and gave a good three back pushes,” she told the local CBS station. Soon, the boy coughed up the piece of candy, and began breathing again. Without another word, Winters handed the boy back to his mother and ran back to her float before it could leave her behind.

It all happened so fast. Nicole never had time to thank the teen. “She didn’t need to,” says Winters. “I knew how she was feeling. I saw her tears. I saw her face. ”

And for Nicole, she says, “I don’t really have any words,” she says. “The words that you would say to anyone who does something for you is ‘thank you. ’ But that doesn’t seem good enough. ”

【1】It can be learned from paragraphs 1-4 that ________.

A.the cheering crowd ignored the scream for help

B.Winters panicked at the mother’s desperate cry

C.the mother gave the boy first aid but in vain

D.the little boy choked on a piece of candy

【2】What does Tyra Winters mainly talk about in the interview?

A.Her dream of being a doctor.

B.Her timely rescue of the boy.

    C.Her enthusiasm for the parade.

    D.Her cooperation with the crowd.

【3】What does Nicole mean in the last paragraph?

A.The media’s attention to the matter left her at a loss.

B.The crowd’s concern for the boy deeply touched her.

C.Her memory of the unexpected incident made her speechless.

D.Her gratitude for Winters’ heroic actions was beyond expression.

  • 22、   Humans are not the only ones who underwent self-domestication. So did our close relatives, the bonobos, and the species we call our best friend. A tiny proportion of the genome differentiates dogs from wolves, and yet millions of dogs are comfortably curled up in our homes, while wolves move around at the edge of extinction.

When our research group began its work almost 20 years ago, we discovered that dogs also have extraordinary intelligence: they can read our gestures better than any other species. Wolves, in contrast, are mysterious and unpredictable. Their home is the wilderness, and that wilderness is shrinking.

But not so long ago the evolutionary race between dogs and wolves was so close, it was unclear who would win. Dogs, in fact, did not descend from wolves. Instead, dogs and wolves shared a wolflike ancestor.

Folklore supposes that humans brought wolf puppies into camp and domesticated them. Or as wolf expert David Mech wrote in 1974, “Evidently early humans tamed wolves and domesticated them, eventually selectively breeding them and finally developing the domestic dog from them.” But this story has not held up. Taming an animal occurs during its lifetime. Domestication happens over generations and involves changes to the genome.

So how did wolves turn into dogs? Back in the Ice Age, as our human populations grew more sedentary, we probably created more rubbish, which we then dumped outside our camps. These leavings would have included tempting pieces of food for hungry wolves. Not every wolf would have been able to scavenge, however. These animals would have had to be unafraid of humans, and if they displayed any aggression toward us, they would have been killed. After generations of selection for friendliness without intentional selection by humans, this special population of wolves would have begun to take on a different appearance. Coat color, ears, tails: all probably started to change.

Animals that could respond to our gestures and voices would be extremely useful as hunting partners and guards. They would have been valuable as well for their warmth and companionship, and slowly we would have allowed them to move from outside our camps to our firesides. We did not domesticate dogs. The friendliest wolves domesticated themselves.

【1】What can be summarized about wolves and dogs from the first three paragraphs?

    A.Wolves are smarter than dogs.

B.They are very much racially divided.

C.They are close relatives but dogs seem to be on the winning side.

D.Dogs have made their ways to indoor life while wolves to the wild.

【2】What is the meaning of the underlined word “sedentary” in paragraph 5?

    A.diverse

    B.limited

    C.living in the same place

    D.involving regular migration

【3】What does the author conclude from the history of dogs and wolves?

    A.Dogs evolved from wolves.

    B.Selective breeding developed domestic dogs.

C.Taming and domesticating an animal are the same thing.

D.Friendliness as a quality translates into an evolutionary strategy.

【4】Which of the following is suitable for a title?

    A.From Wolf to Dog

    B.Dog: Our Favorite Pet

    C.An Intentional Domestication

D.A Competition Story between Wolf and Dog

  • 23、Take a walk through Washington and you’ll find plenty of marble memorials(纪念碑). But is that what the future of the memorial-rich city holds? If the winners of a new design competition have their way, probably not.

The Memorials for the Future design competition invited submissions (意见书) from teams throughout the world. Though, the memorials selected won’t actually be built in the city, they were intended to start a discussion about how to think of memorials in a very different future.

Climate Chronograph, the winning project by Team Azimuth Land Craft, greatly departs from memorials as we know them. The project memorializes the harmful effects of climate change by suggesting a memorial at Hains Point, a spot between the Potomac River and Washington Channel. Just 100 years ago, the man-made island was part of the river. It came into existence after the National Park Service decided to turn the confluence(合流点) of the waters into a tidal basin to protect the nearby National Mall from floods.

Those floods are expected to come more and more often as the climate changes. Climate Chronograph will memorialize those changes by planting cherry trees as a kind of tidal gauge(潮位计) that can be used by future visitors to determine just how much water levels have risen.

The other winning projects include a project that frees mechanical parrots that fly over the Jefferson Memorial and collect and retell stories about monuments,a podcast (播客) platform that puts immigrant stories on public transportation, and an interactive memorial that brings national parks to the D. C. Metro. The competition also produced a report that points to ways America can better memorialize the things that matter—strategies that could help cities save money and space.

That’s good news, especially given that D.C.’s iconic Mall has been closed to new construction. The memorials of the future won’t just turn collective memories toward the stories of new phenomena and groups like climate change and immigrants. Rather, it seems that they’ll make use of space in new creative ways—no marble needed.

【1】What is the purpose of the design competition?

A.To select the best design team.

B.To find new uses for old memorials.

C.To design new memorials for Washington.

D.To explore new ways of experiencing memorials.

【2】What can be used to replace the underlined word “departs” in Paragraph 3?

    A.Differs

    B.Benefits

    C.Suffers

    D.Learns

【3】What do we know about Climate Chronograph?

A.It will be located in a park.

B.It will be built after the competition.

C.It clearly shows the effects of climate change.

D.It uses high-tech equipment to measure climate change.

【4】What would be the best title for the text?

A.A memorial to a sad future.

B.Marble memorials are out of date.

C.Climate Chronograph, memorial for our future.

D.What will the memorials of the future look like?

  • 24、   With bold colors, sharp lines and surreal (超现实主义的) scenes, street art from Brazil brings a different cultural feast to the audience in Shanghai this winter.

Two famous Brazilian street artists, twin brothers Gustavo Pandolfo and Otavio Pandolfo, opened their exhibition at the Shanghai Fosun Foundation on the last day of 2020. Titled “You Are My Guest,” the show will last till Feb. 26.

“It was difficult to put this show together when the whole world had to stop because of the pandemic,” Otavio Pandolfo told Xinhua during an online interview. Due to COVID-19, the two artists could not personally present their work in Shanghai, nor could they participate in the exhibition’s offline planning and preparations. However, they created a network with staff members from the Fosun Foundation in Shanghai via e-mails and video links.

After months of online communication and arrangements, they managed to send over 200 art pieces to Shanghai. “We try to find the best way to share our works with all the guests that visit the show,” he said.

Born and living in Sao Paulo, they infuse(注入) their works with Brazilian cultural elements, such as local folk stories, hip hop music and breakdancing, and hope the exhibition would give Chinese audiences a glimpse of Brazilian culture. “It was a difficult year for everyone in many different ways,” said Gustavo Pandolfo. “We hope that with this exhibition we can bring some hope, energy and light, and people can think of something colorful, fun, happy and with love.”

1What can we learn about the exhibition?

  • 25、It’s long been known that sugary drinks help people pack on unwanted kilograms. But new research suggests that ______ drinks and even 100% fruit juice might raise your risk for some cancers. The study couldn’t prove cause and effect, but it found that drinking as little as 90-120ml of sugary drinks each day was ______ to an 18% rise in overall risk for cancer.

The new study was led by Mathilde Touvier, research director at the University of Paris. Her team collected data on more than 100,000 French men and women, average age 42, who took part in a national ______.

The participants answered questions about how much of 3,300 different foods and drinks they consumed each day, and were ______ for up to nine years.

The study uncovered links between the consumption of sugary drinks and the risk of cancer______, and for breast cancer specifically. The investigators found no association between sugary drinks and prostate or colon cancers (前列腺或结肠癌), but the authors stressed that too few people in the study developed these cancers to make this finding ______. The research ______ no links between diet sodas (无糖汽水) and cancer, although more study is needed to confirm that, the authors noted.

The connection between sugary drinks and cancer remained the same even after the team ______for age, sex, educational level, family history of cancer, smoking and physical activity, the researchers said.

So, why the ______? According to Touvier’s team, high-calorie drinks may raise cancer risk because sugar helps build body fat, in addition to raising blood sugar levels and inflammation (发炎) — all of which are risk ______ for cancer. It’s also possible that chemicals found in these drinks might play a part in ______ cancer risk, the researchers theorized.

A group representing the drinks industry said sugary drinks can still be a part of the ______ diet, however. In a statement, the American Beverage Association said: “It’s important for people to know that all drinks — either with sugar or without — are ______ to consume as part of a balanced diet. America’s leading drinks companies are working together to support consumers’ efforts to ______ the sugar they consume from our drinks by providing more choices with less sugar or zero sugar, smaller package sizes and clear calorie information right up front.”

Samantha Heller is a senior clinical nutritionist at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. She said she wasn’t ______ by the findings. She noted that, for decades, these drinks have been linked with diseases such as heart disease. On the other hand, “most of us should be drinking more water than we do,” Heller said.
