Did the “double reduction” policy (“双减”政策) change the students’ life? Is it good or bad for their study? Two students will share their ideas with us.
Li Linhua, 13, Beijing
It really helps me. Our homework is less than before. I can finish it at school with no need to take it home. I’m also happy to find there are fewer exams. 1. 我有更多的时间去阅读和运动。
Less homework make us have more after-school activities such as dancing, volleyball and drama (戏剧). 2. I can join many clubs, learning all kinds of useful things in life. Teachers are also giving us more chances to learn from real life. For example, we went to research earthworms (蚯蚓) in a field (田野) during a biology class. I believe this is a much better way to learn than just hitting the books. 3. The most exciting thing is that we can be close to the nature.
Wang Hai, 14, Changsha
With the “double reduction”, I have more free time to enjoy what I like to do! But since I can only take after-school classes on weekdays now, 4. Monday has become a really long and tiring day for me. On Monday, I need to take an online class at home after I come back from school. But at least I can have happy weekends.
There is one problem: We can no longer see the rankings (排名) after each exam. For sure, I do feel less stress without knowing them. But at the same time, 5. 我开始担心在学校的成绩。

24、When watching sports events, we often notice athletes wearing earphones before the competition. They keep their eyes shut, and gently nod along the beats. It seems the music is giving them power and cheering them up for the competition. But is there any science behind such practices?
According to a new research, it turns out there is. Music makes us feel powerful, but not all songs have the same effect.
The research was led by Dennis Hsu of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in the US. His team had people listen to 31 songs of different types. The listeners felt powerful after listening to some songs, for example Queen’s We Will Rock You and 2 Unlimited’s Get Ready for This.
Researchers also found that high-power music made people want to take control in social events and come first in competition.
That matters a lot in sports. “It’s commonly said that sports are 90 percent mental(心理的) and only 10 percent physical(身体的),” The Huffington Post reported.
Great athletes know this idea well. NBA player Kobe Bryant, for example, often puts on big headphones and even falls into deep thought to boost his game and reduce his anxiety(焦虑).
Why does music have magical power? Hsu’s team explained: when people hear music that expresses a sense of power, they mimic (模拟) these feelings in their mind.
When choosing music, we also need to look at the type of music, according to researchers.
In the research by the Music in Exercise and Sport Group at Brunel University in London, they found that pop was perfect for slower tasks. If you’re warming up or cooling down after exercises, pop songs are the correct choice. Dance music was found to be best suitable for strength and weight training.
【1】With the first paragraph, the writer mainly wants to ______.
A. prove the music can help athletes win the competition

C. get readers to wonder whether music matters in sports
D. explain why athletes like listening to music before games

A. Listening to music always makes an athlete come first in their competition.
B. People listening to powerful music may produce similar feelings in their mind.
C. Most athletes still don’t know the influence of high-power music on their games.
D. The result of a game is mainly influenced by the physical condition of the players.
【3】What does the underlined word “boost” in the sixth paragraph probably mean?

26、 The search for life outside the Earth may have moved to a new and exciting level. A team of astronomers ( 天文学家) said they have found a new planet that has many important parts similar to those of the Earth.
The planet, which travels around a red dwarf star( 红矮星) called Gliese 581, has the right size and temperature. Most importantly, the planet lies in the suitable living area of the star, which makes the planet not too hot or too cold.
Scientists say the new world, Gliese 581C is five times larger than the Earth. It may have water since it is in the right place for the red dwarf to survive in space.
Swiss scientist Michel Mayor said it is an important step on the way to find possible life in the space and there are still lots of questions.
For more than ten years, astronomers and scientists have been keeping their eyes on the space in search for another Earth, another world that can support life or already has it.
According to records, the first discovery of extra solar(太阳系) planet going around a normal star was made in 1995. Since then, the number of newly discovered worlds has increased to about 200. But they are just dead with lifeless bodies.
The Gliese 581C came into our eyes and mankind has reason to celebrate. After all, we may have living neighbours. The discovery doesn't promise much, but it offers hope that there could be other people or living things out there.

At the beginning of November, the 35th Chinese Antarctic set off for the polar region. This time, one of their main tasks is to build China's first permanent Antarctic airport, Science and Technology Daily reported.
There are more than 20 airports in Antarctic(南极洲), according to Global Times. But none of them belong to China. China's polar plane Xueying 601 has to take off and land at Russian airports.
The new airport will help Chinese aircraft take off and land in the South Pole. This will make it easier to transport scientific equipment and do research, Zhang Xia from the Polar Research Institute of China told Global Times.
In order to be environmentally friendly, the airport will be small, said Sun Bo, leader of the research team. It is much smaller than the usual airports in our cities.
However, this doesn't make it easy to build the airport.
The site of the airport is an ice cap 28 kilometers away from Zhongshan Antarctic Station, Xinhua noted. An ice cap is a thick layer of ice. It covers the land like a quilt. But this “quilt” is always moving. Scientists have to find the slowest-moving part of the cap. You can hardly notice the movement of the ice in this area.
The next problem is the snow. The snow on the ice cap can be very thick. Also, it is as soft as cotton, which makes it hard to build a runway for airplanes. Scientists have to use a snow blower to get rid of the snow on top of the cap. Then, they compact (压缩)the rest of the snow with a road roller-like machine. This way, the snow will be strong and hard enough to build a runaway on top of the cap.
【1】What is the main task of the 35th Chinese Antarctic expedition?
A.Transport scientific equipment. B.Do research.
C.Set up a research station. D.Build an airport.
【2】What is the main idea of the third paragraph?

A.the weather changes very often B.the snow on the ice cap is thick
C.the snow on the ice cap is soft D.the ice cap is always moving
【4】What do scientists use a snow blower to do?
A.To make the ice cap stop moving. B.To clear the snow on the ice.
C.To compact the snow on the ice cap. D.To wash the runway for airplanes.
【5】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.China's polar plane Xueying 601 has to take off and land at American airports.
B.The airport built in Antarctic is the same size as the natural airports in our cities.
