Try to increase the number of your new words. If there are four or five new words on a page, write them in your notebook. 【2】 Instead, try to guess their meaning as you read: mark them with a pen. Then come back when you have finished reading to look them up in a dictionary and write them in your own vocabulary book. Then try to remember them.
Try to read regularly(定期地). 【3】 Fifteen minutes every day is better than two hours every Sunday. Fix a time to read and keep to it. You could read for fifteen minutes when you go to bed, or when you get up or at lunchtime.
Read what interests you. Choose a book or a magazine about a subject that you like, because you are going to spend time and money reading it. 【4】 You can also read newspapers. There are many English newspapers in China. It is easy enough to understand and also there is something interesting in it.

24、 Imagine you're in a coffee shop and someone starts yelling (叫喊) about how he's been overcharged(多收钱)by the cashier. Even if he's right and the cashier did do something wrong, would you still feel offended(被冒犯的)by the yelling?
Maybe you wouldn't. But it would certainly make most Mexican people uncomfortable.
In Mexico, you hardly ever see people lose emotional(情绪的) control. “This is because there are two things that will get you absolutely nowhere in Mexico: getting visibly (明显地) upset and being overly direct,” reporter Megan Frye wrote for the BBC.
People in Mexico are taught to be “indirect”starting from a young age. There is even a localing saying that goes:
"He who gets angry first loses" This is why Mexican people will usually ty their best to be polite. For example, when asking someone to pass the salt-which is “Pásame la sal, por favor” in Spanish. Mexican people will extend the sentence into “Podrias pasarme le sal si eres tan amable (Could you pleasen pass me the salt, if you would be so kind)." And when someone sitting next to you in a restaurant is smoking, instead of saying “Please don't smoke inside", they would probably express it in a more indirect way: “Excuse me, sir/ma’am. Cigarette smoke hurts me."
While being honest and direct is valued in countries like the US and Canada, it's considered to be rude in Mexico. It's a place where the phrase “beating around the bush” actually has a positive meaning, and being “diplomatic (老练的)” is a virtue (美 德), according to Julia Taylor, a culture blogger from the UK.
But no matter how you may feel about it, it's still better to keep things the local way when you travel to Mexico, because-honest or dishonest-trying to keep everyone happy can't be that bad, can it?
【1】According to the article, in Mexico, ________ .
A.yelling at others is the most impolite thing to do in public
B.people usually speak loudly when they feel offended
C.it's impolite to lose control of one’s feeling in public
【2】Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.Mexican people are taught to be direct when they are a child.
B.Mexican people would say "Please don't smoke inside” when someone sitting close in a restaurant is smoking.
C.People think being honest and direct is important in the US and Canada.
【3】The underlined phrase "beating around the bush" probably means ________ .
A.avoiding talking in a direct way
B.dealing with others the way you like
C.trying to make everyone indirect
【4】Where is Julia Taylor from?
A.Britain B.America C.Mexico
【5】How does the author feel about being indirect?
A.It should be considered a virtue.
B.It should be respected if it is part of the local culture.
C.It's not a good way to communicate.
25、Reading is the key to school success and , like any skill, it takes practice. A child learns to walk by practicing until he no longer has to think about how to put one foot in front of the other. An excellent sportsman practices until he can play quickly, correctly and without thinking. Educators call it “automaticity (自动性)”
A child learns to read by sounding out the letters and finding the meaning of the words. With practice, he stumbles less and less, reading by the phrases(短语). With automaticity, he doesn’t have to think about the meaning of words, so he can give all his attention to the meaning of the text.
It can begin as early as first grade. In a recent study of children in Illinois schools, Alan Rossman of Northwestern University found that automatic readers in the first grade not only read almost three times as fast as the others, but also got better results in exams.
According to Rossman, the key to automaticity is the amount(数量) of time that a child spends reading ,not his IQ. Any child who spends at least 3.5 to 4 hours a week reading books, magazines or newspapers will probably reach automaticity . It can happen if a child turns off TV just one night for reading at home.
You can test yourself by reading something new which is suitable for your level. If you read aloud with expression, with a sense of the meaning of the sentence, you probably are an automatic reader. If you read brokenly, one word at a time, without expression or meaning, you need more practice.
【1】The sentence “Reading is the key to school success” means that reading___________.
A. helps school develop faster

27、When I was little, I was really little. But my dream was big. I dreamed of being a basketball player. I tried out for the team at school, but I was never given a chance.
As I got older, I did grow a little bigger, but not a lot bigger. On my 12th birthday, I decided to try a new sport: running. I told Grandpa, “I’m going to be a sportsman.” “Dave,” Grandpa began softly, “if you can’t be big, you can do something big.”
I ran 12 miles on my 12th birthday. On my 13th birthday, I did it again, but I added one mile. On my 14th birthday, I ran 14 miles, 15 on my 15th, 16 on my 16th, and you guessed it—17 miles on my 17th birthday.
All this running inspired (激发) another big dream. Someday, I’d run the Boston Marathon (波士顿马拉松赛). I told Grandpa about my decision. “But, Dave, you haven’t trained for the marathon. Are you sure you’re ready?” Grandpa asked. But he still promised to walk over and cheer me on.
I ran fast that day, but I fell at mile 18 and was driven to the hospital. Later that night, I called Grandpa and told him I failed. “No,” he said calmly, “you didn’t fail. You discovered something.” “I did?” I asked. “Yes, you discovered that big dreams don’t just come true. They take work. If you train and work hard, I promise to wait for you next year and cheer you on.”
I trained every day, running miles and miles. Sadly, just two months into my training, Grandpa died. He wouldn’t be waiting for my second Boston Marathon. I decided I’d run for him.
That day, I ran fast. “Keep going! You can do it!” His words filled my head as I forced my legs to make each painful step. As I crossed the finish line, I threw my arms in the air and cried, “Grandpa, we did it!”
