A farmer had a friend and his friend was famous for growing wonderful apple trees.

One day, the farmer’s friend gave him a young apple tree and told him to take it home and plant it. The farmer loved the gift. But when he got home, he did not know where to plant it. He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the apples. If he planted the tree in one of his fields, his neighbors would come at night and steal the apples. If he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the apples. Finally, he planted the tree in his wood. Nobody could see it, but there was no sunlight in his wood, the tree soon died.

Later, the friend asked the farmer why he planted the tree in such a poor place. “What’s the difference?” the farmer said angrily, “If I plant the tree near the road, strangers may steal the apples. If I plant the tree in one of my fields, my neighbors may come at night and steal the apples. If I plant the tree near my house, my children may take the apples.”

    All about Electric Cars

Electric vehicles(电动车辆) have been around for more than a hundred years. But they have really been liked by a large number of people over the last ten years. More than three million all-electric cars trucks and vans are now on the road worldwide.

    Helping the Environment

Most cars run on gasoline(汽油). Burning gasoline and other fossil fuels(矿物燃料) produces greenhouse gases. Electric vehicles don’t burn gasoline. Instead, strong batteries run their electric engines. So, electric vehicles don’t directly produce greenhouse gases.

    Poop Power!

Electric vehicles are better for the environment. But they are not perfect. Their batteries often use electricity() that was made by burning fossil fuels. But an electric vehicle uses less energy than a vehicle that runs on gasoline. Plus, some of the electricity comes from “greener” sources, such as solar and wind power. And some may soon come from a new source — cow poop(牛粪)! An electric car company has worked together with a large dairy farm. They plan to make electricity using a greenhouse gas from cow poop.

    Always Improving

One of the problems for electric vehicles is their limited range. This is how far they can travel before their batteries need another charge(充电). But now their range is improving. Some new electric vehicles can travel almost three times as far as older ones did. Another problem is finding a place to recharge the batteries. But the number of charging stations is going up as well. China now has thousands more charging stations than it did ten years ago. In Sweden, engineers have even designed a road that will charge electric vehicles as they drive along.

1When did electric vehicles come into use?

A.10 years ago. B.A hundred years ago. C.3 years ago. D.We don’t know.

2Which of the following truly describes electric vehicles according to Paragraph 1?

    A.Useless. B.Popular. C.Cheap. D.Perfect.

3What does the picture above show?

A.Parts of an electric car. B.Ways of driving a car.

C.Wheels on an electric car. D.Batteries in an electric car.

4How does the electric car company plan to make electricity according to Paragraph 3?

A.By burning gasoline. B.By burning fossil fuels.

C.By using a gas coming from cow poop. D.By using solar and wind power.

5What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.Reasons for buying new electric cars. B.Importance of electric cars in our life.

C.Ways to produce more electric vehicles. D.Problems and improvements of electric vehicles.

  • 27、North American black bears are shy animals. They are fearful by nature, and will usually run away if they see or hear people. Because of this, it can be difficult for scientists to learn about these animals.

In order to study black bears, researchers from New Jersey, USA, catch bears and use drugs to help them go to sleep. Researchers then work out the size and the weight of the bear, take blood to test for diseases, remove a tooth and take it to the lab to find out its age. From these studies, researchers want to find out how many bears live in New Jersey, how long they live, and how many babies they produce.

But in Minnesota, USA, researchers study bears that are completely awake. The bears know the researchers’ voices and they are not afraid of the research team. With the help of a few grapes to keep the bears busy, researchers can touch them to check their hearts, look at their teeth, and do other jobs. Researchers can also walk or sit with bears for hours and make videos to learn about their everyday lives.

In both places, the main purpose is the same—to make sure there is a healthy population of black bears. But research methods and the kinds of information that researchers are able to collect are quite different.

Choose the best choice from A, B, or C according to what you read.

【1】In the first paragraph, we can learn that North American black bears are ________.

    A.shy and fearful animals

    B.not found today

    C.well known to scientists

【2】The word “remove” in the second paragraph probably means ________in Chinese.

    A.拔下

    B.移植

    C.清洗

【3】Which of the following may NOT be included in the New Jersey studies on bears?

    A.The age.

    B.The way of their communication.

C.The numbers of babies they produce.

【4】In the Minnesota studies, researchers ________.

A.can never get close to the bears

B.study the bears while they are asleep

C.learn a lot about the bears’ everyday lives

【5】What do the two studies have in common?

    A.Research places

    B.The main purpose

    C.Research methods

  • 28、In most situations, light helps us see. But nowadays humans are using so much light that it is in fact a kind of pollution.

When it comes to looking at the night sky, too much light makes it d1for us to watch some of life’s most wonderful views: stars, planets and even galaxies(星系).

According to scientific research, about 2,500 stars can be seen by the human eye without u2any special equipment(设备). But because of light pollution, you can only see 200 to 300 stars from today’s countryside, and no more than ten stars from a city. In most big c3, people can’t see the sky filled with stars like they die in their childhood.

Light pollution influences more than just our view of sky. The latest research s4that lots of nighttime light can harm wildlife too.

When birds fly to a5place over cities, they sometimes get lost by the brightness and fly in circles u6they drop from tiredness. Sea turtles need dark beaches for laying eggs, but they can’t find their ideal places because of those bright lights.

Too much light at night m7even influence human health, but scientists aren’t sure of that. They are still learning more.

In order to prevent things from going w8, governments and some organizations are working to reduce light pollution. Many cities and towns have taken action to reduce the use of lights at night. Lights are used only when and where they are r9 needed.

Hopefully, in the near f10, humans can enjoy the clear and beautiful sky again and all the wildlife will live a peaceful and undisturbed life too.
