24、During the European colonization (殖民) of North America, many native languages were given up. As a result, many children were stopped from using their own languages. Today, there are about 180,000 Inuit people in the world and fewer than 40,000 can speak Inuktitut, one of the dialects (方言) spoken by the Inuit.
There are about 65,000 Inuit living in Canada. Miali is a 40-year-old student at University of Calgary who is majoring in (主修) International Indigenous (本地的) Studies. She has spent much of her life fighting for Indigenous rights. As one of the few people who still speak Inuktitut, she shows great interest in spreading the language to keep it from dying out completely.
Asking why this is important is just like asking why water is important, said Miali. “We need it, and there’s an innate (天生的) need inside us searching for a part of ourselves we can identify with (认同). I want to give people their language, and allow them to understand something they’ve been searching for.”
Miali has been teaching others in Inuktitut for 10 years now. She dreamed of taking her task even further, so in 2021, she started an online course to teach the language to anyone who wants to learn it, no matter where they live. She offers the course through her business, Allurvik, which also sells a variety of Inuit-made products and services. She even makes videos in both English and Inuktitut.
Miali believes that speaking their native languages helps them connect to their ancestors and land. This connection is grown in their culture helping them understand who they are and how they fit into their communities. She’s pleased to be able to use technology to bring her language to anyone in the world.
“Many people want to learn Inuktitut but don’t have the supports in place,” she said. “All I want to do is to make Inuktitut a little more available, especially to the Inuit people who want to learn and anyone else who’s interested in it. I hope my work also encourages others to make Indigenous languages more widely available.”
【1】Why does Miali try her best to spread Inuktitut?
A.Because there are many Inuit in the world.
B.Because she wants to stop it from disappearing
C.Because she wants Inuktitut to be popular in the world.
D.Because she wants more Inuit people to speak their own language.

26、Last year in the UK at least 45 people died and 900 more were injured (受伤的) in car accidents where drivers were using their mobile phones.Yet many people continue to use them while driving even though it’s dangerous.
Research has shown that it is difficult to concentrate on (专注于) driving and talking at the same time.It can even be more dangerous than driving after drinking too much. A recent study found that when drivers were talking on their mobile phones, their stopping times were 30 percent slower than when they had drunk too much—and nearly 50 percent slower than when they were driving normally. It also found that drivers talking on mobile phones were less able to control their cars than drunk drivers.
And talking isn’t even the most serious problem, but texting is. Unbelievably, another recent study reported that 22% of adults admitted (承认) they had sent a text message while driving at least once in the past month. An average (平均的) text message takes 90 seconds to write and send. That means for one and a half minutes a driver is looking at their phone’s screen and not at the road. The arrival of new smart phones such as the iPhone will only make things worse as they will allow users to do more things than ever before.
Using a mobile phone while driving puts others’ lives at risk. No matter how well we drive,if another driver is not careful,we are put in danger by their actions. Such drivers are selfish, careless and should have their driving licences (驾照) cancelled (撤销).
There is no doubt that mobile phones can be fun and are useful, especially when you’re in trouble. But there is no need to use them while driving. Just wait until you stop or you will probably get into trouble of your own.

B. People will want to talk on their phones more often.
C. There will be more things for people to do with their phones.

【5】According to the writer, what should be done to people who use mobile phones when driving?

27、Gift giving is different from culture to culture and person to person.
When giving gifts, sometimes color is important. For example, for many Chinese people around the world, red is a lucky color, and people often like to pack gifts in this color. However, did you know that in Korea, red is a color of death? That is why you should not pack gifts in this color if you are giving a gift to a Korean person.
What about western countries? In western countries ,the color of packing paper is not really important. But color does matter when giving flowers, especially roses. You should not give red roses to a western person you don’t know very well because they are a symbol of love. You could give yellow roses instead as these are a symbol of friendship. You could also send pink roses as gifts to say thank you.
What other things should you remember when giving gifts to someone from a different culture? Well, one thing you should keep in mind is the person’s religion. When choosing a gift for a Muslim or Jewish friend, you should never get good food including pork or things made from pigskin. Another thing that you shouldn’t get for a Muslim person is alcohol.
【1】Red is a lucky color all over the world .
【2】Yellow roses are a symbol of love.
【3】 When you give gifts to a foreigner, you should remember his religion.
【4】Three kinds of color are mentioned in this passage.
【5】 We can give a Muslim friend a bottle of alcohol as a gift.
28、Fill in the blanks with proper words(在短文的空格内填入适当的词,使其内容通顺.每空格限填一词,首字母已给出)
Selfishness can sink your friend “ship”
I’m sure that you have seen the cartoons on the Internet. Two penguins sit on either side of a small boat. They are friends, but each does something selfish which c【1】 their friend “ship” to sink.
The cartoons have become very popular and have been viewed millions of times. And their popularity shows how much people value friendship and sometimes worry that they may lose their friends. An old saying goes that a close friend is w 【2】 a thousand distant relatives. It is p【3】 right. Even more than your family, a friend is someone you can share your happy and sad moments with. A friend is someone to talk about d【4】feelings. And with a good friend you will never be a【5】 .
However, maintaining friendships isn’t always easy. Sometimes we may take our friends for granted and, like the two penguins, act selfishly. The key to k【6】your friend “ship” from sinking comes down to three simple things: sharing, caring and communicating. Good friends like to share everything with each other. They share their snacks, they share their knowledge about schoolwork—sometimes they even share their clothes! And good friends also care about each other. They do whatever they can to make their friends happy. But the most important part of friendship is communicating.
Communicating means talking to your friends and always being honest with them. It also means that you keep in touch with your friends even though they may be in different schools or live far away. A lack of communication is the surest way to send your friend “ship” to the bottom of the sea.
Friendship makes life happier and more meaningful, but remember, “the only way to have a friend is to be o【7】.”
