  • 25、   Most animals have little connection with animals of a different kind, unless they hunt them for food. Sometimes, however, two kinds of animals come together in a partnership(伙伴关系) which does good to both of them. You may have noticed some birds sitting on the backs of sheep. This is not because they want a ride, but because they find easy food in the parasites(寄生虫) on sheep. The sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort. So although they can manage without each other, they do better together.

Sometimes an animal has a plant partner. The relationship develops until the two partners cannot manage without each other. This is so in the corals(珊瑚) of the sea. In their skins they have tiny plants which act as 'dustman", taking some of the waste products from the coral and giving in return oxygen which the animal needs to breathe. If the plants are killed, or are even prevented from light so that they cannot live normally, the corals will die.

1Some birds like to sit on a sheep because ________.

A.they can eat its parasites B.they depend on the sheep for existence

C.they enjoy traveling with the sheep D.they find the position most comfortable

2The underlined word "they" in the last sentence of the first paragraph refers to ________.

A.birds and parasites B.birds and sheep C.parasites and sheep D.sheep, birds and parasites

3What does the second paragraph mainly discuss?

A.Some animals and plants depend on each other for living. B.Some animals and plants develop their relationship easily.

C.Some plants depend on each other for food. D.Some animals live better together.

  • 26、In North America, most students go to school by bus. The subway is also widely used in some cities. In small towns and cities, walking is still popular.

The yellow school bus is a familiar sight all over North America. It is a very convenient form of transportation because it takes students right to the entrance to the school. It also gives students opportunity to chat with their friends. However, the bus is slow and does not always pick up on time.

The subway is a means of getting around quickly in many cities. However, it is expensive and can be very crowded during rush hour. Another disadvantage of the subway is that the stops are not so close to the school, and students ofetn have to walk considerable(相当大的) distance or take a bus from the subway stop to the school

Walking has a number of advantages for those who live close to school. It’s free and it provides a form of exercise. However, it’s no fun if you have a large backpack full of books to carry. It’s also unpleasant if the weather is either too hot or cold or wet.

    根据短文内容,判断正(T)、误(F)。

1】In North America, most students go to school by subways.

2】The school bus is always red in North America.

3】The stops of subways are not close to the school.

4】Some students like walking because it can provide exercise.

5】 Students can go to school by five means of transportation according to the passage.

  • 27、It’s true that there are some differences between China and western countries. If you don’t know any of them, you may get into trouble when you are with westerners.

If you go to the westerners’ house, there may be one dish ready on the table. And they will tell you, “The dish.” While Chinese people usually get a lot of dishes ready and like to say, “It isn’t well prepared.”

As we know, Chinese people like to put the food on your plate to show their hospitality. But westerners don’t do it. They think to help yourself is the best way. Westerners give guests the chance to choose what they like best.

In the west, it is polite to open the gifts as soon as they are given. In China, it is quite different. The Chinese people think if you open the gift at once, you might embarrass the person who gives you the gift. So they always open it after the guests leave.

Speaking in public is a kind of two-way-communication, it needs eye contact(接触). But the Chinese are usually shy to do this and this will make the speakers feel sad.

The westerners are happy to praise others, and they are also glad to accept others’ praise. However, the Chinese often refuse praise from others. Westerners can’t understand why they do it like this.

“Lao” is used by Chinese people to show someone who is older than the speaker. It also means politeness. But westerners sometimes seem unhappy because they are called “Lao Wai”. They think they are not very old.

【1】The underlined word “hospitality” means ________ in Chinese.

    A.富裕

    B.好客

    C.谦虚

    D.喜好

【2】In public communication, ________ will make the speakers feel sad.

    A.no eye contact

    B.eye contact

    C.no body language

    D.body languages

【3】Western people may think it good to ________.

    A.be called like “Lao Wai”

B.get a lot of dishes ready

    C.praise others and be praised

D.open the gift after the guests leave

【4】The passage is mainly about the differences between Chinese and western ________.

    A.cultures

In the city I live in, some seats on every bus come in orange color, different from the rest which are blue. Those seats are intended for (预留) a certain group of people—the old and some who need special care, such as the disabled or those with small babies. So you can often see young people choose to take others seats i【1】 of the orange ones if possible.

One day, my friend Lisa got on a bus and found the only untaken seat was an orange one. She hesitated(犹豫) for a moment and slowly walked to it and s【2】 down. As the bus went on, passengers(乘客) gather from stop to stop and the bus became really crowded(拥挤) . At that time, someone near the door asked loudly if there was anybody who would like to o【3】 a seat to the old man who had just got on the bus. On hearing it, Lisa looked a【4】 to see where the old man was. She was even about to get up but found it d【5】 for her to stand up. Thinking that someone near the old man would help him, she remained(保持) seated. In fact, she had another r【6】 for sitting but she said nothing. To her s【7】 , she soon became the target of criticism(批评的目标) from some people standing beside her.

    “Shameless,” a voice said.

    “Morality decays(道德败坏),” another voice added.

Lisa kept s【8】 as the short conversation went. She didn’t want to say anything. She “should” feel ashamed(羞愧). Lisa turned her face to the window to hide her embarrassment(尴尬).

If you were a passenger on that bus, would you stand out against her and blame(责怪) her for not giving up her seat? If I hadn’t known the story of Lisa’s side, I would. However, the truth is: Lisa had just a small o【9】 in hospital last week and was in recovery (恢复). Her doctor had told her to sit instead of s【10】 as much as possible. The long bus trip would give her trouble if she stood all the way.
