四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、The Vieira family moved to the United States in 1981. At that time, they decided to stop speaking Spanish at home and only communicate in English. This was because they were now living in an English-speaking country.

Now the Vieira children are adults, and they sometimes travel to Spain to visit their family and friends. But they cannot communicate with them. Unfortunately this is common. When people move to new countries, they often leave their own customs and mother language behind. This is a mistake because there are many benefits to knowing more than one language.

One advantage of speaking more than one language is that you can communicate directly with more people around the world. You do not have to depend on others to talk to you, so you’re more independent. People who know only one language must use others to help them communicate.

Furthermore, speaking a second language also allows people to experience other cultures and customs more effectively. Local expressions, vocabulary, and even jokes can have a powerful effect on a person’s understanding of another culture. So, knowing more than one language increases your knowledge of other cultures.

Finally, having more multi-language speakers improves relationships between countries. If people from different countries can communicate well, the world can become closer. Countries will then have more respect for each other and better understand each other’s problems.

The benefits of knowing more than one language are clear. In fact, there are no disadvantages. It is very sad that many people don’t try to learn another language. It is even worse when people let themselves forget their mother language and become silent.

【1】What is the passage mainly about?

A.The benefits of learning other languages.

B.The reasons why people come to America.

    C.The importance of learning English.

    D.How to learn another language.

【2】The passage begins with the experience of the Vieira family in order to _______.

A.discuss the need for teaching a new language

B.introduce the passage’s main characters to the readers

C.describe the advantages of moving to another country

D.show the problems of speaking only one language

【3】According to the passage, if you can speak more than one language, you can _______.

    A.find a better job

    B.make more friends

    C.better understand history

    D.communicate more independently

【4】Based on the last paragraph, which of the following is the worst?

    A.Not knowing another language.

    B.Forgetting one’s mother language.

    C.Refusing to learn another language.

    D.Failing to communicate with others.

  • 25、   Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well, but he wants it to be something that has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand what he wants to teach them, and what he wants them to learn from him.

What visual (视觉的) artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experience into shapes and colours, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colours, out of countless billions of, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colours, or have felt the delight which they brought to the artist.

Most artists take their shapes and colours from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion and at rest; their choices indicate (指示) that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights. Contemporary (当代的) artists might say that they merely choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it. Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects.

If one painter chooses to paint a decaying (腐烂) leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something-all of which means that, consciously (有意识地) or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.

【1】An artist hopes that the public will ________.

A.understand him and learn from him

B.notice only shapes and colours in his work

    C.teach him something

D.believe what he says in his work

【2】It is hard to explain what a painter is saying because he/she ________.

    A.does not express himself/herself well

    B.uses unusual words and phrases

C.uses shapes and colours instead of words

    D.does not say anything clearly

【3】The writer points out that the contemporary artists might say their choices of subject ________.

A.carry a message to the public

    B.only provide interesting pattern

    C.have no pattern or form

    D.teach the public important truths

【4】What do you know from the passage?

A.A painting is more easily understood than music.

B.Art is merely the arranging of shape and colours.

C.Every artist tries to say something consciously to the public.

D.One must look beyond shape and colour to find what the artist is saying.

  • 26、Recently, I happened to hear a mother and daughter in their last moments together at the airport as the daughter prepared to leave.

They hugged and the mother said “I love you and I wish you enough.” They kissed and the daughter left.

The mother walked over to the window where I sat. Standing there, I could see she was going to cry. I tried not to disturb her but she welcomed me by asking “Have you ever said goodbye to someone knowing it would be forever?”

“Yes,” I replied. “But may I know why this is the final goodbye?”

“I am ill and she lives so far away. It’s highly possible that the next trip back will be for my funeral(葬礼)” she said.

“When you were saying goodbye, I heard you say ‘I wish you enough’. May I ask what that means?”

“That’s a wish that has been handed down from past generations. My parents used to say it to everyone.” She paused for a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail and she smiled even more.

  • 27、Can plants talk? Modern study has found something amazing: they do communicate with each other.

It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant gets attacked by insects. The plant gives out chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning, or a call for help: “I’m being attacked! When another plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others attract the wasps(黄蜂)! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the plants. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow more crops.

More surprisingly, plants also use sounds to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Corn and chili plants do this. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water.

Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”. The wood wide web is linked underground by fungi(真菌). It links the roots of different plants to each other. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. However, it may lead to bad effects. Plants may use it to steal food from each other, or spread chemicals to attack other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will lead how to create a “firewall” to help prevent these attacks within the wood wide web.

Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to “talk” with them ourselves.

【1】What will plants do when they are attacked by insects?

A.They will kill the insects by themselves.

B.They will control the wasps to kill the insects.

C.They will send out signals to ask for food.

D.They will produce chemicals as a warning or a call for help.

【2】How are the wood wide web linked by fungi?

A.By making noises with their roots.

B.By connecting the roots of different plants to each other.

C.By sharing food and information with each other.

D.By spreading chemicals to each other.

【3】What is the writer’s intention of the last paragraph?

A.To give people hope for further studies.

B.To praise scientists for their great achievements.

C.To call on people to protect the plants on Earth.

D.To inspire people to communicate with plants.

【4】What is the structure of the passage?

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

    A.The Secret Language of Plants

B.The Study about the Plant Warning System
