24、 Everyone needs friends. There is one old saying: Friends are God’s way of taking care of us. But how do you find real friendship and keep it?
The Care and Keeping of Friends by American author Sally Seamans tells young students some smart ways of finding friends.
Sally says finding friendship is just like planting a tree. You plant the seed and take care of it to make it grow. First, you should choose a friend. What makes a good friend? It is not because a person has money or good looks. A good friend should be kind and patient. To make a friend, you can not be too shy. You should make each other happy and share your lives.
But things can not always be happy. What should you do when you have a fight with your friends? You have to talk to them. If he or she doesn’t want to talk, you could write a letter. Sally says there are three steps to be friend again. Tell him or her how you are feeling, say what your friend has done wrong, and explain why you did this or that.
The book also has advice on some small but important things like celebrating your friend’s success. Make sure to read it if you want to find real friendship and keep it.

26、I used to teach in public schools. After several years of teaching, what struck me was that IQ was not the only difference between my best and my smartest kids. Some of my strongest performers didn’t have super IQ scores. Some of my smartest kids weren’t doing so well. If doing well in school and in life depends on much more than IQ, then what is it?
I left the classroom and become a psychologist (心理学家). I stared studying kids and adults in all kinds of challenging conditions, and in every study my question was: Who is successful here and why?
We went to West Point Military Academy. We tried to predict which cadets (军校生) would stay in military training and which would drop out. We went to the National Spelling Bee and tried to predict which children would make the farthest progress in competition. We studied new teachers working in really tough neighborhoods, asking which teachers were still going to be there at the end of the school year.
In all those very different contexts, one characteristic stood out. It wasn’t social intelligence, or good looks, or physical health, and it wasn’t IQ. It was grit (毅力).
Grit is passion and perseverance for long-term goals. Grit is having patience. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the months, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it’s a marathon not a dash.
Grit also matters in school, especially for kids at risk of dropping out. I asked thousands of high school juniors to take grit questionnaires and then waited around more than a year to see who would graduate. It turns out that grittier kids were more likely to graduate.
However, we still know little about building grit. Perhaps that’s the work that stands before us. We need to take our best ideas and test them. We need to be gritty about getting our kids grit.

27、Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going.
When the world’s population was still mainly made up of hunter﹣collectors, small and deeply connected groups developed their own patterns of speech which is not connected to other groups’ speech. Some language scientists believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.
Soon afterwards, many of those people started lives and become farmers, and their languages too became fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade and the spread of education, especially globalization (全球化) and better communications, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.
At present, the world has about 6, 800 languages. However, the people who use the languages in the place they spread are hugely different. The general rule is that warm and comfortable places on the Earth have relatively few languages, often spoken by many people, while hot wet places have lots, often spoken by small numbers.Europe has only around 200 languages; the Americas about 1, 000;Africa 2, 400;and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3, 200.What’s more, the median number(中位数) of speakers in the world is nearly 6, 000, which means that about half the world’s languages are spoken by fewer people than that.
Already far over 400 of the total of 6, 800 languages are close to disappear, with only a few elderly speakers left.Busuu in Cameroon (8 remaining speakers), Chuapaneco in Mexico (150), Lipan Apache in the United States (2 or 3)or Wadjigu in Australia (1, maybe one speaker): none of these seems to have much chance of living.
【1】What can we infer about languages in hunter﹣ collector times?
