25、Tanaka, a 118-year-old woman from Japan who has been certified(认定) by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest living person, gave up her position in the Olympic torch relay.
Tanaka celebrated her 118th birthday on January 2, 2021. She had planned to carry the torch as it passed through the town of Shime, in the prefecture of Fukuoka(福冈县), where she has lived her entire life. If so, she would become the oldest person ever to carry the Olympic torch.
She even had a new pair of sports shoes for the event—a birthday present from her family. Her relatives had decided to push her in a wheelchair for most of the 100 meters, but she would walk the last few steps before handing the torch to the next runner. However, Tanaka decided to pull out of Olympic torch relay because of the spread of COVID-19.
Tanaka was born in 1903. Tanaka married a rice shop owner, Hideo Tanaka, when she was 19 years old, with whom she had four children. Tanaka worked in the family shop until she was 103. She has five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Tanaka now lives in a nursing home, where she usually wakes up at 6 a.m. and she spends her time doing math puzzles and playing the board game Othello.
She lived through two world wars and the 1918 Spanish flu, although her grandson said, “I don’t remember her talking much about the past...she really enjoys living in the present. It’s great she reaches that age! We want other people to see it and be inspired, and not to think age is a barrier.”
However, Tanaka has a few years to go before she is the oldest person ever. The record is held by Jeanne Louise Calment, a French woman who was 122 years old when she died in 1997. Tanaka has said she wants to break the record.

Imagine living your life like this: when you get up in the morning you say “open the window” to a computer and it opens the window. Then you finish breakfast and sit in front of your desk at home and begin to have classes on the Internet. With a help of building a smart city, this may come true one day.
The idea of a smart city goes back to 2010. A smart city uses smart technologies such as the Internet to make our lives easier. People live in smart cities, where there is Internet almost everywhere. They can do many things at home, such as booking train tickets, paying water bills and so on.
Now China is making some cities smarter in these ways. For example, Guiyang, Guizhou, is going to build free Wi-Fi in the city. Tianjin will start a “Smart City” plan to help reduce traffic jams.
In fact, smart cities are more common in foreign countries. Here are some great ones. Dubuque became the first smart city in the US. The city uses smart water meters(计量器) to let people know how much water they use and how to save water. Copenhagen in Denmark has also used smart technologies. I think if the translations of English in China are all perfect, something will be lost from Chinese culture.” However, Chinglish will probably become a part of history in future. Beijing has made a plan to correct Chinglish within five years. “It is so funny to see Chinglish on the signs. And they are a kind of trouble for communication between the Chinese and foreigners,” a Beijinger said.
