She asked us to stand at the back of the classroom for a few minutes. This made me uncomfortable . After that, I feel nervous in her class, so I don’t like her class anymore . However, I really want to learn English well . What should I do ?
Mike
Dear Mike ,
I am sorry you are having a difficult time with your English class. Every teacher wants his or her students to study hard especially in class. So I think you should have a talk with your English teacher and tell her what you were doing with Tom that day. If she knows your worries, maybe she will help you with your English. And she will be pleased to hear that you want to learn English well. I believe when students are not trying to study as hard as they can, a teacher is forced(被迫)to punish them.

25、Smoking is harmful. But as soon as you stop the habit, everything will be OK, right? Wrong.
New research has found that even if you give up smoking, the damage it has done to your genes (基因) will stay there for a much longer time. In the research, a team of US scientists studied the blood of 16,000 people. Among them, some were smokers, some used to smoke, and the rest were non-smokers. Scientists compared their genes and found that more than 7,000 genes of smokers had changed—a number that is one-third of known human genes.
According to NBC News, both heart disease and cancer (癌症) are caused by genetic changes. Some people may have had the genetic changes when they were born, but most people get them in their day-to-day lives while doing things like smoking.
When you stop smoking, a lot of these genes will return to normal within five years. This means your body is trying to heal itself of the harmful effects of smoking. But the changes in some of the genes stay for longer. They can stay for as long as 30 years. It’s almost like leaving a footprint on wet cement (水泥)—it will always be there, even when you’ve walked away and when the cement becomes dry.
Although the study results may make people unhappy, there is a bright side: the findings could help scientists invent medicine to treat genetic damage caused by smoking or find ways to tell which people have heart disease or cancer risks.
【1】According to the passage, how many genes of smokers had changed?
A.16,000.
B.Over 7,000.
C.Over 21,000.
【2】Most genetic changes happen because of _______.

【3】The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refers to _______.

A.Few of these genes will return to normal within five years.
B.The changes in some of the genes will stay for a long time.
C.They will walk away and become dry.
【5】Which of the following is TRUE?
A.The people in the research are smokers or those who used to smoke.
B.It’s impossible to have genetic changes when people are born.
C.The findings can help scientists to treat genetic damage caused by smoking.
26、Have you ever heard the phrase “You never get a second chance to make a first impression(印象)?” It may sound like an unusual piece of advice, but it is true—the first impression someone has of you when meeting you for the first time will probably influence how that person treats you or reacts to you in the future.
What is even more interesting is that the brain takes in all the information to create that first impression in about three seconds. When you meet someone for the first time, by the time you have stated(陈述)your name or shaken hands, the other person has already formed an opinion about the kind of person you are.
So how do you make a good first impression? All things grown-ups tell you—such as being polite, and being well-dressed—are very important. However, the most important tool for making a good first impression is your face. Smiling, being responsive, and looking like you are happy will almost always leave a positive(积极的)impression on people, especially those who do not know you. Most people, generally speaking, are ready to smile back when they are smiled at.
Besides, smiling and being positive helps you to know and get a better understanding of new things. This means that you can possibly be friendlier to people you do not know and be more creative and able to solve problems more quickly. So if you ever need a reason to be happy, think about the wonderful people you might meet—and impress—with a cheerful smile.
