  • 25、

One day a man found a cocoon (茧) of a butterfly in the forest. He sat there for several hours and watched the butterfly. Suddenly a small opening appeared, and the butterfly made its great effort to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no further.

So the man decided to help the butterfly. He cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon so that the butterfly could come out easily. But to his surprise, the butterfly got a heavy body and very small wings when it came out of the cocoon.

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that the body would grow smaller at any moment and the wings would become larger and be able to fly. But neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling (爬) around with a heavy body and small wings. It was never able to fly.

The man was in his kindness, but he did not understand the nature rules. Before the butterfly came out of the cocoon, fluid (流体) from its body must be forced into its wings, and then it would be ready for flying. It must have a hard struggle (拼搏) to get through the small opening to get its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If God allowed us to go through our life without any difficulties, it would make us fail. We would not be as strong as we could have been; we could never fly.

【3】What do you think of the man?

    A.Patient but cruel.

    B.Careful and wise.

    C.Kind but unwise.

I could be filled with gold, silver and valuable items. I could be decorated with beautiful designs and I will be the most beautiful treasure box in the world.” Then the second tree said, “Someday I will be the biggest ship. I will take kings and queens across the waters and sail to the corners of the world. Everyone will feel safe in me because of the strength of my body.” Finally, the third tree said, “I want to grow to be the tallest and straightest tree in the forest. People will come to see me on the top of the hill. I will be the greatest tree of all time and people will always remember me.”

After a few years of praying(祈祷)that their dreams would come true, the trees were visited by a group of woodsmen. When one came to the first tree, he said, “This tree looks like a strong one. I think I should be able to sell the wood to a carpenter(木匠).” And he began cutting it down. The tree was very happy, because he knew that the carpenter would make him into a treasure box.

At the second tree, a woodsman said, “This looks like a strong tree and I should be able to sell it to the ship factory.” The second tree was also very happy because he knew he was on his way to becoming a huge and strong ship. When woodsmen came upon the third tree, the tree was frightened because he knew that if they cut him down, his dream would not come true. One of the woodsmen said, “I don’t need anything special from my tree. I’ll take this one.” And he cut it down.

The first tree was made into a feeder box for animals and was placed. In a barn and filled with hay(干草). The second tree was made into a small fishing boat. The third tree was left alone in the dark.

Years went by, and the trees forgot about their dreams. Then one day, a woman came to the barn and saw the feed box. The man wished that he could place their baby in this feed box that was made from the first tree. The tree could know that it had held the greatest treasure of all time.

Years later, a group of men got in the fishing boat made from the second tree. One of them was tired and went to sleep. While they were out on the water a great storm came and the tree didn’t think it was strong enough to keep the man safe. The men stood and said “peace” and the storm stopped. At this time, the tree knew that it had carried the King of Kings in its boat.

Finally, someone came and got the third tree. The tree was raised in the air at the top of a hill to support the electric wire and he came to realize that he was strong enough and his dream came true.

Each of the trees got what they wanted, just not in the way they had imagined. When things don’t seem to be going your way, always know that there are other gifts for you.

【1】Why did the second tree feel happy when the woodsman cut it down?

A.Because he could travel on the water.

B.Because he could keep many people safe.

C.Because he thought he would become a big ship.
