24、Can plants talk? Modern study has found something amazing: they do communicate with each other.
It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant gets attacked by insets. The plant gives out chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning. or a call for help: “I’m being attacked! When another plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others attract the wasps (黄蜂)! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the plants. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow more crops.
More surprisingly, plants also use sounds to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Corn and chili plants do this. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water.
Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”. The wood wide web is linked underground by fungi (真菌). It links the roots of different plants to each other. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. However, it may lead to bad effects. Plants may use it to steal food from each other, or spread chemicals to attack other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will lead how to create a “firewall” to help prevent these attacks within the wood wide web.
Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other, Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to “talk” with them ourselves.
【1】What will plants do when they are attacked by insects?
A.They will kill the insects by themselves.
B.They will control the wasps to kill the insects.

【2】How is the wood wide web linked by fungi?

25、To help Japanese companies better deal with the increasing number of foreigners visiting the country, Panasonic has created a megaphone(扩音器) which is able to smartly translate Japanese into English, Chinese and Korean.
Panasonic named the product “Megahonyaku”. It is a term for the Japanese words for “megaphone” and “translate”, which actually makes a lot of sense because it’s a megaphone that can translate Japanese into several other languages in real time. When a user speaks Japanese into the megaphone, it recognizes(辨别) and translates what is being said immediately, and outputs the words in English, Chinese or Korean.
It sounds amazing, and seeing it in action is wonderful, but Megahonyaku is not good enough. It cannot translate everything you say, as it only stores 300 common expressions, like “The train has been put off” or “Watch your step”. However, the Japanese company behind Megahonyaku promises to add new expressions regularly, which users can get on the Internet. The machine was designed to be used in places like transport stations, airports and places of Interest, where quick and exact announcements are needed most. Around 30 Japanese organizations, including the police and guides, have been trying out Megahonyaku for about one year, but Panasonic says it will come onto the market on December 20th. Instead of selling these speech translators, Panasonic plans on renting(出租) them out for less than $183 a month on a three-year agreement, and offering users future improvements and necessary services. Panasonic has also said that it may add support for other languages, like Russian, depending on customers’ needs. Megahonyaku also includes a touch screen that allows users to choose the language they need their speech translated into.

26、What is the most important invention of all the time? Is it the written word that helps us to record information? Is it the telephone that lets us talk to people from all over the world? Is it the car that lets us travel at great speeds to meet others? Umberto Eco, an Italian writer, thinks it is something quite different. He says the most important invention might be right in front of your eyes. He is talking about a simple pair of glasses.
Modern eye glasses were invented around 1000 years ago. They were more than just a convenient way to read. Before glasses were invented, writers, scientists or teachers who could not see properly had to memorize everything. After about ten years of poor eyesight, they could not remember well enough and could not work. Glasses meant that people could work in their old age. People who wanted to remember some information could write it down and read it. Eye glasses are one of the world’s greatest inventions and were probably worn by the people who designed the first telephone and car.

27、Communicating with Our Hands
We use our hands to communicate in many ways. The thumbs up sign shows agreement. A wave of the hand can be a gesture to mean hello. Many people make an “O” with their thumb and second finger to show that everything is OK.
While riding a bike, people use hand signals (信号) to communicate that they are going to turn left, or stop. Policemen wave traffic on or hold their hands up to direct drivers to stop. In classrooms, children often put up their hands for permission (许可), people clap their hands to show appreciation (赞赏) for a performance.
Some people use sign language (a system of hand gestures, facial expressions and body language) as their primary form of communication. Deaf people communicate through a system of sign language. Like different verbal (口头的) languages are spoken around the world (促进) communication and education of deaf people.
It has become common for parents to teach signs to little children. Babies can actually imitate (模仿) and use signs before they can speak clearly. This helps parents get to know what a child is in need of before the child is able to communicate his or her needs verbally (口头地).
Just as people study more spoken languages, an increasing number of people are choosing to study sign language in their free time. Each year, thousands of people learn sign language so they can more easily communicate with deaf people. Many companies are looking for workers with the ability to communicate through sign language. Many people learn sign language simply because they find it interesting and enjoy the challenge of learning a new skill. Sign language is growing in usage every day.
