25、The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication means (通讯设备). Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.
Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to another place. But this is not helpful. Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.
Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal(煤)in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air. Pollution by SO2 is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused(引起)by heavy traffic. We are sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.
The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. Also, we must take care of the rise in pollution at the same time.
【1】________, our world is becoming much smaller.

D. Because the earth is blown away by the wind every year

【4】According to the passage, which statement is true?
A. The more people, the less pollution.
B. Air pollution is the only one kind of pollution.
C. If there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.
D. We should not use modern traffic and modern communication any more.
26、The FIFA World Cup will be held in Qatar and exciting moment is truly coming. It’s the world’s biggest international soccer game and also the most-watched sporting event in the world. There are 32 teams competing to win. This year’s game looks to be particularly unique (独一无二). What makes it different from the ones before?
For starters, it’s the first time the game has been held in the Middle East after Qatar beat other host competitors—the US, South Korea, Japan and Australia back in 2010. It’s also the first time in history the game is happening during the Northern Hemisphere (北半球) winter months, from Nov 20 to Dec 18.
That’s because Qatar is a desert country, and in summer the temperature can be as high as 42℃. That’s way too hot to play outdoor sports. But it will still be pretty warm in winter. The temperature in the stadium (体育场) is expected to be around 20℃ to 30℃. Air conditioning (空调) will help to keep it cooler.
Qatar is also the smallest nation by area to host the cup. They’ll be playing the first match of the game, facing Ecuador (厄瓜多尔). It’s Qatar’s first-ever FIFA World Cup game. This makes them the first country to host their debut (首秀) game since Italy in 1934!
There may be new challenges for many players too. Besides the hot weather, for European teams like England, France, Germany and Spain, it’s only just over a year since their last big international game, the UEFA Champions League (欧联杯).
According to FIFA’s rankings (排名), the favorites to win the game this year are Brazil, followed by Argentina and France.

Internet search engines at that time were slow and gave many websites that weren't useful. In January 1996, Page and Brin decided to make a better and faster search engine. They thought the results should be based on the most popular websites.
Nobody would give them money for their project, so they used their own money. They also borrowed money from family and friends. Then, in 1998, they were given achequefor $100,000, and they started their own company. Their first office was in a friend's garage. The company's name is Google, a word which comes from mathematics. A “google” is a very high number----1 followed by a hundred zeros.
The google search engine was soon used by thousands of people worldwide because it was fast, easy and correct. By 2002 it was the biggest search engine on the Internet. 28、 There are some expressions(表达方式) about colours. They are very interesting. If someone 【1】(want) a cup of “black coffee”, that will mean he or she wants coffee without milk, while “white coffee” means coffee with milk. “A green hand” means someone is not good at 【2】(do) something.
Maybe you 【3】(hear) of the expression “a black sheep” ever. It refers to(指) a person who behaves badly and often causes trouble. For example, Tom doesn’t listen to teachers and school rules 【4】(break) by him often, so he is called a black sheep.
Then what does “a white lie” mean? It means a lie with a good will(意愿). For example, someone gives you a present you dislike, but you don’t want 【5】(hurt) him, so you say, “That’s really nice. I like it very much.”

29、We all know that some things are obviously right. For example, it is right to be kind to other people. It is also right to look after the environment. Some things are wrong, too. For instance, we should not hurt or bully others, nor should we litter. Rules often tell us what is right or wrong.
Rules can help the public make the right , and remain safe. Car drivers have to obey traffic regulations that tell them the right things to do on the road to avoid crashes. Cyclists who give signals before turning or stopping help prevent .
If people follow rules without taking other matters into consideration, it will be for them to form what is sometimes called a “black and white” view. For example, they may believe that people should always tell the truth, and that lying is acceptable. Such people always stick to their views, even if it means that they may get into trouble.
Sometimes it may not be so easy to know what is right or wrong. Some people choose not to eat meat because they believe that it is cruel to eat animals, but others argue that they can eat meat and be kind to animals; some insist that stealing is always wrong, but others think that one does not need to feel when stealing some food to eat, if lives in a really poor area and he is starving. Rules help us live together in harmony, because they show us the right way to _ others. However, some people argue that rules may be confusing, having observed that rules change all the time, and that some schools have some regulations and other have different ones --- so who is to __ what is right?
