24、 Katy Marsh is seventy years old now. She stopped working five years ago. Last year, she decided to realize her dream that she had when she was young. She hoped to travel along a river of Scotland in a small boat. She took her small CD player, her hot water bottle and a bag of books to make sure life in the boat wasn't too uncomfortable. We asked her if she was afraid of being on the river for so long. She said, "Well, I'm going to take a good compass. When I'm losing my way during my trip, it can help me a lot."
Anyway I'm not afraid of death because I love rivers—I just hope it loves me, too. Katy certainly had plenty of energy(精力). In her free time, she enjoyed swimming and hiking. She had a wonderful trip in the small boat last year. She is seventy, but she doesn't want to have a quiet and peaceful life. She hopes to have fun in the rest of her life.

25、Everyone knows by now that plastic pollution is a huge problem for the environment. Beijing, for example, has dealt with this by banning (禁止) thin plastic bags, plastic tableware (餐具) and others made of plastic in supermarkets, restaurants and hotels since May 1.
But an even better way to solve the problem might be around the corner. Researchers at a French company called Carbios have discovered a bacterial enzyme (细菌酶) that can break down plastic. The enzyme, which was first found in compost (混合肥料) leaves, turns plastic into chemical “building blocks” that can then be used to create new products.
The new enzyme was uncovered in research. Researchers studied over 100,000 microorganisms (微生物) to find one that could break down plastic quickly. The leaf compost enzyme was first discovered in 2012. Scientists changed its genes (基因), allowing it to break down 90 percent of one ton of plastic in less than 10 hours.
“It had been completely forgotten, but it turned out to be the best,” said Professor Alain Marty, a science officer at Carbios.
The enzyme especially breaks down PET, a type of plastic that is most commonly used to produce plastic bottles and food packaging. It is the fifth most common type of plastic that we use.
Carbios said it is working together with companies like Pepsi and Nestle— major consumers (消费者) of plastic themselves —to develop their research and start using the enzyme on an industrial scale (范围).
【1】What do we know about the enzyme?
A.It is a type of bacteria.
B.It can break down plastic quickly.
C.It can break down PVC.
D.It is the fifth-most common type of plastic.
【2】What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.How the scientists found the new enzyme.
B.Where the scientists found the new enzyme.
C.When the scientists found the new enzyme.
D.How the scientists changed the enzyme’s genes.
【3】What does Alain Marty mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Better late than never.
B.Never too late to find the new enzyme.
C.Change the enzyme’s genes.
D.It was a pity to forget the new enzyme.
【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Carbios will turn its focus toward production.
B.Carbios will keep looking for a more efficient enzyme.
C.Carbios will search for more companies like Pepsi to work with.
D.Carbios will work together with companies that use a lot of plastic.
【5】Which can be the best title for the passage?
A.Natural way to reuse plastic
B.Natural way to recycle plastic
C.The new enzyme used in plastic
D.The man-made way to break down plastic
26、Cuttlefish (乌贼) Can Watch 3D movies and Wear the Glasses
When tested, subjects showed they have depth perception (深度知觉) much like humans. Humans and cuttlefish are similar. How do you ask? They can both watch and react to 3D movies. The scientists studied this by gluing Velcro (粘扣带) near their eyeballs, and then sticking on 3D goggles. It wasn’t easy.
“It took a lot of coaxing (劝诱) of the cuttlefish to make them wear their glasses,” Trevor Wardill said. “They’ll want to play with it.” Once a cuttlefish got hungry, the scientists showed them 3D videos featuring two shrimp silhouettes (剪影), each a different color and a different distance from the camera.
This proved that cuttlefish do have depth perception, just like humans. In some cases they would get so close to the video shrimp that their tentacles (触须) were hitting the screen itself.
“I was ecstatic. We were sort of jumping up and down,” Wardill said. He also said that the cuttlefish would immediately get real shrimp as a reward. The study proved that the cuttlefish see in 3D, but not exactly the same way that humans do. Also, even though they have “fish” in their name, cuttlefish aren’t really fish.
“While cuttlefish have similar eyes to humans, their brains are significantly different,” Paloma Gonzalez-Bellido, assistant professor at the University of Minnesota, said in a university press release. “We know that cuttlefish brains aren’t like humans. They do not seem to have a single part of the brain dedicated to processing vision (专心致志于处理视觉). Our research shows there must be an area in their brain that compares the images (图像) from a cuttlefish’s left and right eye and computes (计算) their differences.”
【1】What does “it” refer to in Para 1?
A.Depth perception.
B.Wearing glasses.
C.Gluing Velcro.
D.The test.
【2】From the passage, we can infer that shrimp are cuttlefish’s ________.
A.food
B.playmates
C.rewards
D.enemies
【3】What did the research want to prove?
A.Cuttlefish’s brain is different from ours.
B.Cuttlefish do have depth perception.
C.Cuttlefish can watch and react to 3D movies.
D.Cuttlefish are the most intelligent.
【4】What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To explain the reason.
B.To provide more tests.
C.To show humans are cleverer.
D.To show cuttlefish aren’t real fish.

Discovery in The Foja
In 2008, a group of scientists went to the Foja Mountains in New Guinea. “The mountains are unique. There are no roads, no people — and almost no human impact (影响),” one group member said. In just a few weeks, the international team found at least 12 different new species (物种). These species live only in the Foja Mountains. Here are a few of the animals they discovered.
Biologist Kristofer Helgen found this tiny tree mouse, which travels from one tree to another. “It uses them almost like a highway in the forest. It hardly ever goes down and touches the ground,” he says.
The blossom bat (花蝙蝠) is a bat with a really long tongue. It uses it to drink nectar from flowers. “It’s kind of like the hummingbird of the bat world,” says Helgen.
The scientists also found a frog, which they called the Pinocchio frog because of its long nose. They were very lucky — they caught one in the camp kitchen. During the whole trip, this was the only one they saw.
The group found many amazing things. However, there are still many more mysteries waiting for the next team of explorers.
【1】There is nothing in the Foja Mountains according to a scientist.
【2】The team of scientists found four new kinds of animals.
【3】The underlined word “them” in Para. 2 refers to trees.
【4】The blossom bat uses its long nose to drink nectar from flowers.
【5】The scientists only found one Pinocchio frog in their trip.
